Are there any good places of resource on this particular model? Books/internet/previous threads.

I would like to know things like colour variations (I understand they werent all viola), numbers made, UK models etc.

I am also interested in prices of this model. I cant find any currently for sale but past ones have gone for £20-25k.

Cheers

Phil

Phil,

There is a lot of information on the 'net about the Celebration model. In Europe it's better known as the Jubilee model - or, more affectionately, "Jubi". If you do a Google search for "Porsche 964 Jubi" I'm sure you'll find quite a bit.

As far as specifics are concerned, there were 911 produced although only 899 were shipped and they were offered with a very limted colour choice of Viola Metallic or Polar Silver Metallic. There have been rumours of 1 UK car being in Guards Red but I have never seen any information to substantiate that claim. All of the RoW Celebration models were shipped with a numbered plate to confirm the attributes of each car - as distinct from the US wide bodied C4s shipped in 1994 which did not have the numbered plaque.

All of the Celebration models were wide bodied C4 Coupes with full leather interior (Magenta for the Viola cars) and air conditioning and had the standard electric pop-up spoiler (rather than the fixed spoiler of the wide bodied Turbo cars). The cars did NOT have the Turbo suspension of the Turbo brakes but relied on the standard C4 items.

I personally know of one Viola car which was modified by Ruf to 465bhp which was quite recently written off at Silverstone and another Polar Silver car which has a supercharger fitted. There have been a few sold over recent months through Ray Northway and Paul Devya in the £20,000 to £25,000 bracket - they certainly seem to command a good premium over a standard C4.

I'm afraid I don't have any details of the LHD/RHD split or the proportions of the colours shipped.

Dave

Dave,

Thanks for the info. They do seem quite pricey (maybe its because its a limited edition). You can get a good (ish) 993 for this money.

Can I ask - Is this the only wide bodied 964?

Phil

Phil,

No - it's not the only one. Apart from the obvious Turbo models, which are all wide bodied, the factory did produce a number of Cabriolets with the wide body - referred to usually as WTL, Works Turbo Look. They also did the 1994 run of wide bodied C4s for the US market but there were only 256 of those. There were also a similar number of RS 3.8 cars produced in 1993 which were also wide bodied.

There are also a good number of after market conversions which have been done - like mine - but I have no idea how many of them there might be.

Dave

Phil,

Just in passing, there appears to be one for sale at Sean Lockyear's - here. It's a few cars down the list, highish mileage etc. etc. at just under £20K

Regards

Dave

Dave,

That looks a nice car and more what I would like to pay.

Do these cars have any sort of plaque like the 1989 turbo LE?

Plus, what should the alloys be? and wing mirrors - are they teardrop or is this an update?

Regards

Phil

Phil,

Yes, the Celebration models should all have a plaque giving their unique number in the series of 911. I believe the standard wheels on the Celebration were 17" Cup 1s and the teardrop mirrors were standard. That particular car has non-standard wheels - stated to be Turbo 3.6 Speedlines, but they are not. The Turbo 3.6 Speedlines had centres styled on the Cup 1s and those fitted have more curvy centres - a la Cup2s.

Incidentally, according to Adrian Streather's book, the "missing" 12 cars were built to the same "Jubilee" standard but without the numbered plaque - and some were finished in other colours - Oak Green and Guards Red was mentioned. I wonder if those 12 cars are worth more on just rarity alone?? I wonder how many are still running?

Dave

I wonder if the one in Henley was originally red!!

If so, it might be quite rare

He seems to have some interesting cars for sale!

Would you take the £100K XJ220 over the £122K 993GT2? Never realised they had got so cheap, considering the rareity value and the historical importance.

(assuming you could actually drive the Jag without it breaking down/the value dropping even further etc)

Phil, When I spoke to simon I was drooling over the car, it had the 911 badge on the back & I am sure it was orginally Red, he may have mentioned it was a special order but I am a bit cloudy on it.

Call him or leave a message on his machine, he is a nioce guy, tell him David with the 964 Cab he looks after gave you the number.

As I said it was available a couple of weeks back or so.

Good luck

Out of curiosity I just called Hillcrest in Henley and spoke to Simon Hope (01491 642911) about it. It is an original Guards Red car and IS one of the rare 12 cars shipped after the main series of Celebrations were completed. The car doesn't have the numbered plaque (as is correct for the later 12 cars), has a linen leather interior and is registered on an "L" reg from September 1993.

It's done 96,000 miles (with a speedo change at 5,000) and is apparently in good order - apart from the paint work. According to Simon, the previous owner had a bust up with his now ex-wife who took her vengence out on the car - so it's got scratches over the bonnet, wings and engine cover. They have it up for sale at £21,995 although it sounds like they are negotiable - depending on whether they or the buyer sorts the paintwork out. They apparently want the buyer to see it in it's damaged condition to avoid any speculation about what happened to it.

I have no interest in this car or the promotion of it - I merely thought it worth completing the discussion on the subject with some additional facts.

Dave

I have just called Simon about this car as its exactly the sort of thing I am after.

He is going to take some photos and e.mail them to me over the weekend.

I'll let you know what happens.

Phil

Phil, good luck with the car, I liked it a lot, but I also like my Cab especially in the summer, I wish I could have both, I love the wider bodies on Porkers[:D]

I look forward to hearing how you get on with it, Simon's a good guy & knows his porkers inside & out[;)]

Mutt,

Thanks for letting me know about this car. I'm a couple of hours away from Henley and so cant readily view it.

You say you liked it a lot and I was wondering if you could give me anymore feedback on it? I mean, is it a car you would buy? Does it look nice and tidy?

(I'm pretty sure I'm going to go for it though[:)])

Cheers

Oh dear, is that Brian's car? Lovely example

Phil,

Yes I liked it a lot, I did notice it had some paint swirls but its not expensive to sort I don't remember any wife attack damage to the paint, but that could have happened after I first saw it plus paint work on cars is not expensive as it used to be, it also looked like it needed a wash & wax when I saw it, but Simon had only got it that day so I suspect he had not had time to prep it, I can't remember exactly but it had a lot of updates engine wise, no leaks, possible clutch etc but as I said I am not sure.

& yes I would have bought it, I like the Red colour & with that wide body it looked bloody great, even if it needed a bit of TLC, my next Porsche will be a wide body job I just love them.

Good luck, I am sure it will be a winner, but go and look at least you know its been looked after by a good specialist who works on a few 964 cars & the owners that use this forum.

I look forward to hearing about it[:)]

In anticipation of purchasing a 964, I have just bought Peter Morgans Ultimate Buyers Guide. In it he states 'August 1991 Turbo-look bodyshell option for C2 coupe and cabriolet models'. He goes on to state (as Dave mentioned) 'The 911 Celebration had the wide Turbo bodyshell (but not that cars suspension or brakes'.

Firstly, that means there must be other 'official' turbo-look cars out there and secondly what other extras does the buyer get over and above a C4 (aprt from the extra cost)? Was this just simply a ploy by the marketing men to sell a few more cars at what was a bad time for Porsche?

If you go back a few years to the supersport 3.2, I believe that this had turbo brakes etc. I understand that the 993 carrera S's also had turbo kit.

Basically, I am trying to justify to myself buying a celebration for £20k when I can get a comparable 964 for less than £15k. What am I getting for the extra dosh?

Philip,

In all honesty, you don't really get a great deal more than you would with a decent spec C4.

In reference to your quote from Peter Morgan's book, I haven't been aware of any C2 Turbo Look cars - apart from the cabriolets. I don't know of ANY factory C2 Coupe Turbo Looks.

The Celebrations were fitted with a lot of stuff which would have been options on the standard cars, i.e. air conditioning, FULL leather interior, dual air bags etc. etc. but no turbo brakes/suspension - and little choice of colour. And, of course, you get the cachet of the numbered plaque!! Unless you buy one of the rogue 12!!

Incidentally, the 993 Carrera S (i.e. the RWD car) did NOT have turbo brakes, only the 4S was fitted with those.

I'd still buy one if I had the money - and the inclination to sell mine!!

Regards

Dave
