964 RS Spec

Hi, I actually own a 964 C2 which has only been in the UK since '99. However when I bought the car there was an RS badge on the back and the car had RS suspension, cup mirrors / wheels and RS steering wheel. I like the look of the car over a standard C2 but as yet do not have the cash for a real RS ( and cheapest insurance quote i had was over £2,500 ). I would like to change the rear PU to an RS item and fit front air ducts but I understand that the RS Touring had no rear seats even though the front seats and door cards were the same as the C2 and C4 - is this correct ? If so do you know if it is possible / safe for me to remove the rear seatts and where I would be able to buy an RS rear carpet ?

from memory front air ducts not standard on RS - they were issued with just the foglamp lenses but no lamps behind. buying & fitting the ducts can be really expensive for what you actually get in my opinion
should be no issues removing the rear seats & perfectly safe. Southbound trimmers a good start point to get a repro carpet

fyi there are some RS door cards on e-bay at the moment - no reserve

Have you actually got the Magnesium RS wheels fitted to your car? The biggest weight saving you could make would be to replace front seats with Lightweight recaros.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll be taking it one step at a time though ( whilst consulting the insurance company ! ) . Does anyone have a quick shift fitted to their car - or does anyone have a view on these ? Having always had Jap sports cars I find the gear throw pretty long.

A short shift kit is available that reduces the ratio of the gear lever linkage -the term 'rifle-bolt' springs to mind when fitted!!

Well, exactly Maurice!! Plenty of time for some minor fettling and polishing and revised graphics.

And BTW, back to the subject:

RS v. C2
Gearlever ratio 3.4:1 v. 4.0:1
Travel 52mm v. 62mm
Offset 10mm v. 0mm
Raised position 28mm higher than C2

I think for me anyway the jury is out on the seam welding bit! granted the rear seating area was modded and on the cup cars, areas are stengthened. Not sure if this actually counts as "seam welding" though. With regards to fitting RS rear carpet in a C2 remember that the seat mounting points will have to be removed to get a nice smooth look. Having never done this I'm not sure if these are bolt in or welded points.

I thought that they were seam welded in key areas normally spot welded all round the car..but must admit have never taken the time to compare & contrast [8|]
do you reckon this is an urban myth then?

Graham the good news is that the doors of the RS Touring where the same as the C2/4 i.e door bins electric windows etc, the only difference between Touring and C2/4 is the removal of rear seats and front Sports Full Leather seats, trimmed in various shades, like a triple leather effect. The reproduction of the seats would be the most expensive and hardest part to replicate they are not the Recaro bucket but more of a deeply contoured C2/4 they look really good. Oh and an RS steering wheel.

Thanks for all your advice - it's most helpful. I'll have a root around in the back at the weekend and see how the rear seat mountings are fixed and i've found a few German websites that i'll try for the seats. Fortunately the RS steering wheel was already fitted ....... so that's one down , half a dozen to go !!

I think what I am saying is I'm not sure! I have never taken that deep a look at the welding. There is no mention of it in any of the RS litrature of the time either. There is certainly difference in the rear seat area and there is mention in the body work manual of how to convert that area to cup car spec. The club sport of course has a cage and strengthening plates to fit the cage and the cup car is a different animal again, although 92 MY cup cars are built on RS platforms! all very confusing. There may even be differences between early and late model RS in this respect. The word seam may also be a bit overboard as it may well be that panels had more spot welds than standard. I think I may post to Adrian who may have a more definate answer.
 
Also Laurence I was told that the last produced cars did not have the seam welded body as the factory had run out and did not bother regearing for these last cars. Apparently you can tell by the rear seat belt fixing holes. Were you aware of this?
 
The rear seat area is the only bit I know for sure is modded. It even says so in the tech spec for the car. It's the other bits and where I'm less sure of. But it does'nt suprise me that some cars are different.
 
I'll have a look in the Cup, but what am I looking for??? Wouldn't know a seam weld if it hit me!!
