964 RS Wanted

Hi

A good friend of mine is looking for a nice 964 RS to do some track days and have as a second car. He has seen a couple and would like to buy soonish to get some track days in this year.

Ideal spec would be LHD (driving position, cost), roll cage/harness (safety) and slightly modified for better power and braking.

He really liked Phillipe's old black RS at H&S but I believe that may have been sold. There are a couple for sale at Autufarm and GT Classics, if anyone knows of any other cars that might suit please let me know.

Thanks

Boydy's car is for sale RHD but he has Motec one and respray. Looks good and very quick. Check out his posts for details. Also on the trackday photos at Spa.

I think Phillipe's old car is at a dealer in Holland - black car previously owned by a professor at Glasgow - would that sound right?

Yes, I believe PhilRSs previous car has been sold. Spoke to Paul at GTClassics but my friend was too late.

Would he not interested in my babe?
I have had LHD also and to be honest there is not that much difference in handle feel with the power steering
The car is well sorted and although it has had a full repray it does have the usual stone chips on the front as it has been used as it was intended
let me know
I am surprised though in lack of calls for the car!
Is it too expensive.......am i asking too much?
regards
Raymond

I think this whole RHD v LHD thing is blown out of all proportion and that in real terms, there is nothing to choose. OK, to the LHD brigade the RHD driving position seems more offset but I have never found myself cursing the RHD driving position while I am sure if I had a LHD car, I would be cursing that as I need to use a swipe card entry system (on the right side) regularly. In the same vein, the power steering really si very good and while I am sure the LHD feels different and might feel a bit better, the powers steering gives loads of feedback.

The biggest reason for not getting an RHD car is the premium they command. But then again, what price rarety. I don't think that boydyrs car is over priced but I don't know where he has advertised it. I certainly wouldn't have thought that a "closed" forum for RS OWNERS is the best place[;)]

Hi. Firstly, thanks to everyone who has sent me info about cars for sale, very much appreciated and all passed on to John (the friend looking for a car). I think I must know about nearly every car on the UK market now (and a few overseas)!!

On the LHD issue, I think it really boils down to cost. John is looking at a 964 RS mainly to do track days as he has other cars for general use. Why spend an extra GBP5-8k if you don't mind sitting on the left? The driving position / steering feel may be marginally better with LHD but certainly not enough to give up the practicality RHD cars offer in the UK. I would certainly consider RHD .......... if they cost the same.

Raymond - I saw your car at SPA and it looked great and went very well indeed. IMHO, I think it may be a little expensive as it is priced at the top end of the 964 RS market and people are usually looking for mint, original, low mileage cars for that money. Yours will appeal to a very different type of buyer who wants the performance and is willing to pay for the time and money you have invested. I would argue that this buyer could well opt for LHD. If you haven't had many calls, that may be an indictation.

To illustrate the cost issue for LHD vs RHD, PhilRSs car which was very well developed (engine, suspension, 6 sp gear box +++) was on sale for approx GBP31k. It also had about 55k km which is less than half the mileage of yours, all of which made it very attractive. I think LHD cars are better value, especially if you want to do a limited amount of road mileage and some track days. There is also more choice - I can think of 4 or 5 300bhp+ LHD 964 RSs for sale at the moment and the yellow one that recently sold at GT Classics - all are in the GBP32k price range.

I am sometimes tempted to make a few changes to my car but have opted to keep it as original/standard as possible because of 1. resale value 2. trackday noise limits 3. its fast enough for me (the driver is the weakest link!!).

Interested in what other people think.

Regards

I bought the yellow one at GT Classics! Spent a couple of months looking around and canvassing opinions. The LHD vs RHD was just a cost issue for me. My plan is to thrash it round a track and an extra £6-8k is more money to damage/invest for essentially the same experience. Just supply and demand at work I think. Also, I thought I got a well sorted/invested car for the money. That being said, if Raymond had advertised a few weeks earlier I would have been very interested as it would have satisified the RHD/not yellow preferences of my wife albeit for more cash. I was also interested in PhilRS's car in terms of spec.

It also struck me that modified cars command no or limited added price despite having thousands spent on them - have a look at the modified clubsport on Tom Shmitz's web site vs the stock item. Again, supply and demand and depends on your preference. Your average punter feels more comfortable with a "stock" purchase.

Hi Feroz,

It's interesting to hear you say you've been given details of lots of 964 RS's. I am currently looking for cars for about 5 specirfic requirements and in addition to this Tom wants me to keep an eye out for good stock as he is also low on stock. He can't find much at all in Europe and I only know of 5 LHD cars for sale (3 trade and 2 private) in the uk. Be interesting to know about the other cars avaialble.

Macca, wot you know you only flog old nails.& as for Tom he could get more cars if he stopped wearing those dodgy spandex strides.

For what it is worth, I have read in Flat-6 (May '05, the yearly review of the market) that there was a slight decrease in 964 RS values (-1,500 euros, from 55,000 to 53,500 euros for 'excellent' cars) on the continent in part due to a large (-7,000 euros) depreciation of GT3 Mk1... They also quoted the 993 RS slightly higher than the GT3, in matched condition.

PhilRS - I saw your old 964 at a dealer in Holland yesterday. He must have bought it off Tom. It still looks really great, and sounds awsome! It may be interesting for a UK buyer, because it is sill on UK plates, and the Dutch vehicle tax hasn't been paid.

I see that Specialist Cars in Malton are advertising two 964 RS- a rubystone RHD and a mint green LHD- both at £39995

PhilRS black car is a track day car. It has uniball solid bushes, H&R dual coil overs and big reds. MPCs and alloy bolt in roll cage. I looked at it myself and had numerous laps at Spa and Knockhill. It has a upgraded Cup engine to 3.8 litre and 6 speed Ruf G50 box.

The clutch is very heavy! I would seriously recommend you drive it before buying. It is a aquired taste and most buyers would be better off with a standard spec RS. Take your earplugs!

I know as I opted to buy his previous red RS for similar money. Original paint and matching nos. was the differentiator for me.
