964 to GT3?

ORIGINAL: NeilW

Gordon, yes the 996T is a bit of a performance bargain at the moment, it just doesn't call out to me as a GT3 does. How are you finding the 996T compared with what looks like an extensive range of previous Porsches?

Neil

Regarding 996 Turbo unbelievable "bang for bucks" and I would recommend to anyone at the price they are, the equivalent 993TT is £25-30k more which is not so refined but my personal favourite (just so you know where I'm coming from) they need a noisy exhaust box added. Like the 993 they are great everyday cars happy in town, mind boggling out of town and great motorway cruisers. The GT3 is the perfect track day car but not overly happy in traffic jams and horible country roads.

Regarding the other cars I could drive 964's (with sound improvements ) anytime best sound around (exc 993TT), 993's great easy to use everyday car. 944T best value for money every day driver (with double barrelled wastegate).

Thought I'd better add my tuppence worth as I've had both.

964 great as an everyday car if it's all working fine but if you've continually got things to fix then it starts to become a bit of a pain. The nice thing about a 964 is that you feel like you are going fast without actually going fast so it's a fairly safe way to get a buzz!

GT3 MK2 is awesome, looks fantastic, sounds fantastic, is a lot more useable than a 964 and being newer should be more reliable but if you want to drive it fast on normal roads then I think it's flawed. It's a right handful to keep in a straight line and in the wet you need a lot of skill to keep it pointing in the right direction.

Having said that, I'm really pleased to be able to say I've had one and I did have some great experiences in it, one of them being that good looking women start taking an interest in you!

So Neil, just go for it, buy a nice one and you shouldn't lose much money on it. There are lots of other cars you could try after that.

So what are you going to do with that pink 944 ?

Richard,
I was hoping you'd comment as I knew you'd owned both. The first two years of 964 ownership did involve quite a bit of maintenance; nothing major, just things the previous owner either let slide or didn't notice. But for the past two years it's required relatively little expenditure and been very reliable. My main gripe is rust/bodywork, which I have a real loathing of. This is a definite plus point re the GT3. Having said that how would it fair with its lack of underbody protection as year-round transport?

This thread has been real therapy; seriously thinking about ditching the 964 has made me realise how much I'd miss it, so something really special would be required to replace it. As others have already found perhaps the answer is to have both though this will have to wait a while.

Re great experiences - I'm afraid it's probably a bit late to be attracting women, no matter how good looking.[:D]

Re 944 - It's going either way. It's my 3rd 944 but, like you, I never really bonded with it. Heavier than the early models so the sharpness is missing and without the frenetic power delivery of my earlier S and Turbo. A very competent, capable car, just a bit too sensible.

My GT3 friend just told me that he is thinking of selling his silver Mk2 clubsport.
Hes not interested in doing trackdays and has come to the conclusion that its not an
ideal road car ! its a mint low mile example so i could put anyone in touch ...
