Simon,
I've made the same move and had similar concerns before I started looking. Having looked hard for a while, given the open market prices, it is perfectly possible to upgrade (?) from 3.2 to 964 without a) breaking the bank, and b) going back to 'square one'. I would be wary of any 964 with 60K plus miles and no re-build, particularly an early one. But to put it in perspective I paid £15k for a '90 C2 with 156k on the clock. Lots of miles ? Yes, but it had a full top and bottom end rebuild 5k ago, with lots of other 'bits', and it drives like new and feels far tighter and more responsive than my 3.2 did. So if you look carefully and are prepared to delve under the skin of the cars you look at there are plenty of keenly priced 964s out there that have had all of the well known 964 issues dealt with.
