964s for sale

There is a c2 Coupé for sale at specialist cars of malton which I am close to buying. Does anyone have any views on it? I’d be grateful for any thoughts.

Looks like a very nice original example.

Not cheap, but probably not far off with that mileage.

Love the interior colour - much better than the more common blacks, creams, very light greys.

Personally not a fan of Black exterior though - too much hard work.

 
I was thinking the same, to keep value though you'll need to garage it and probably not put too many miles on it. Mine has 110k for example so putting another 10k doesn't really make much difference to value, but that won't be the case for a low miler.

Other thing id say is no photos of the engine or frunk so we cant see what that looks like. Exterior looked very original though with flag mirrors, d90 wheels, amber indicators etc..

the car was part of a collection that was bought by the dealer and had been stored (dry storage) for quite a few years hence the low mileage. Downside is that there was no servicing for that period (and no MOTs) - but I suppose not that uncommon for a long term stored car. What are the views on lack of history for this period (assuming hopefully that I can verify the period of storage)?

this would definitely not be a purchase just for investment. It would be used!

Most people will tell you these cars need to be driven to keep them in good condition. Assuming they service it, it should be okay though I’d expect you’ll find things wrong with it as you really start to use it. If you have a good warranty then you’ll be covered ignoring the hassle factor from any issues. No one really knows the answer to your question though so i’d personally drive it as much as possible early on to find any issues while you have the warranty from the garage.

Lack of history suggests a general lack of care, again you might be fine, time will tell on that. Assuming you keep it for a couple of years then history gaps would be less of an issue when you come to sell in my view.

i would google reviews on the dealer though to make sure they are good at fixing issues, you may be relying on the garage warranty rather than a third party warranty (if they give you one) as the issues you find will likely have been there from before the sale.

I looked on pistonheads and you could save £5-7k for car with few more miles (still under 80k) and likely to be less likely to have problems. Saying that condition on this looks lovely so can see why you like it even if you’ll knock the value down a bit by driving it. These cars do 200,000 miles so dont be scared of 100k+ milers though doubt body work and seats would be anywhere as close to new condition on those.

if you are worried about gaps in history get an independent pre purchase inspection. You might find you recoup the cost in bargaining power on any issues they find and would give peace of mind if you dont know how they normally drive or what to look for. If you plan to drive in the winter and wet then you should also consider a C4. They are much more benign at limits of adhesion.

This is an interesting car. Was listed on collecting cars, reached about £42k and then was removed due to an issue found at MOT (they didnt say what). Now back on autotrader for £42k. If anyone is interested in this I'd take a look at collecting cars pics first. It looks really nice from the initial pictures but the pics of the rust in the collectingcars listing suggest there is a lot of work needed in a number of different places plus a full respray. it looked expensive to fix to me, I'd have thought it was worth mid-30s at the most or my car is worth a lot more than i think it is!

Personally, I think £42k is steep and would walk away - way too much work needed. Linen interior 100% will look scruffy up close and in person (I ripped all my linen interior out asap for all black). Light paintwork easy and not wallet busting to correct - full respray might not be necessary (unless you prefer of course). C4 mechanicals more important imho. Very close inspection of every single receipt and garage works list from the the MOT fail fixes needed if still interested. There was plenty to sort out from the MOT and how they managed that in 4 days to a pass I'll never know - very suspicious. MOT fail notes as below:

agreed that is a lot of work for 4 days. I don't know how they even got into a garage in that time, GT one was seven weeks lead time last time i asked (only a few weeks ago).

based on everything else you're probably right on the linen interior though mine has 113k miles and still looks good though has been recoloured at least twice.

So what happened between 2011 & 2018, apparently not serviced? That's not a FSH in my book, mine gets an annual service, whether it needs it or not and it's booked for one in a couple of weeks despite only around 400 miles since the last one ([&o]).

Also, it's been serviced at a specialist in only February and they didn't spot any of those faults? No way that lot appeared in the last 6 months!

Definitely requires a thorough inspection before purchase.

 
I'm planning to sell my 964. What websites does the forum recommend for selling a 964?

Also, what selling websites should be avoided?

I tried pistonheads a few times when selling my Alpina, but found autotrader more effective. autotrader is also where I have my alerts for 964s

I'd also suggest posting details on here, 911uk, the porsche 964 facebook group.

If the car is in good condition then you could also try collecting cars. People have got fairly decent money on that and buyer pays the costs (6%). A coupe and targa went for £40k but they were high milers. A low mileage 60k red coupe went for £47k.

You could also try a dealer like Phil Raby or 911virgins to see if they are interested.
