968 - Cab v Coupe

not a lot of difference 20 years later

I think that is where we have a big difference of opinion, I've had 3 944s, one being an S2, and 3 968s including Sport, CS and Coupe, you mentioned the Shape being different and as well as other things that creates a huge difference when it comes to buying, the 968 still looks fresh, unfortunately the 944 looks old(sorry chaps, I do still love the 944 [;)])

In fact after the S2 I was making a decison between another S2, 944T or 968 Sport, decision was ultimately made on age, power and looks, also got a bit of a nudge from the missus who said buy the one that looks the youngest. It does make a huge difference especially 20years later.

If you consider the 944 and 968 are so close as in 944S3 then shouldn't we be bringing the 924S into the conversation as well. should we really be classing the basic 944 as a 924S2 [;)]

I always point people towards the 924S as the best version of an early 944, being both cheaper and lighter. Most want the 944's more "butch" wheelarches, though.

I guess it's all about personal taste. I don't like the 968 rear, and I think it makes the car look more "dated" than the 944. The 924/944 is a classic shape, the 968 a facelift that is neither modern, nor period '70s or '80s. I admit I'm not sure I should be saying this on the 968 forum, so I'll go back to my own area! As you say it really is a matter of opinion on the visuals. I'm far from convinced the great unwashed would feel that the 968 is any improvement on the 944 shape wise.

I didn't choose the 944 over the 968 because of its looks, maybe you did? Equally I really wouldn't choose a 993 as I really don't like its shape yet allegedly its is the de rigeur shape.

I certainly wouldn't consider any 968 an upgrade from my 944. If there was a 968 turbo readily available then maybe but that's not the shape, that would be a well set up 3 litre 16v turbo. Inside they are the same.

Yes we could include everything from a 924 through an S to the 944 lux to the turbo to the 968 (chronologically). Good 944 2.5 lux models are comfortably fetching our 3K figure, S2 are getting there so how long for a 968?

we do differ on opinion, only time will tell if 968s come down to the same level a an equivalent S2, I can wait, the longer the better [:)]

Probably about the same for an S2

not sure that can be right,
don't think anyone would buy an S2 when an equivalent 968 is available at the same price,
although there is some parts similarity they just aren't the same car

I have to disagree, having only had my 968 s few weeks but 1st serious drive is now! Having booked for Cotswold rally before date moved we have a week in the Cotswolds & so far I'm not convinced that my 968 is better than my S2? Sure there are many areas that are improved over the S2, seats are more comfortable all around it's quieter but the 2 areas I'm not thrilled about is the 6 speed box & the general handling! The gear selection is tighter but with such close ratio's I find the S2's 5 speed more relaxing and the extra changes achieving little?
I find the steering heavy with a tendancy to wander & pull left on uneven B roads, the car has 17"Cup 1's with the wider tyres which I'm hoping are the cause of the handling issues? I intend trying 16" wheels with 944/968 standard tyre sizes to see if the handling is then similar to my S2? Other wise it might be the 968 that gets sold not the S2?

I have to disagree

In fact you are agreeing with me(maybe partly)

they just aren't the same car

you also seem to have come to that conclusion in what you say, although you actually prefer the S2 [:)]

the question still stands though, will 968s ever be the same price as a 944 S2 and only time will tell
