968 engine differences

If you are going to quote me use the whole quote please. I have seen photographs of instances, in magazines recently, where the chain tensioiner is completely worn away and down to the base metal due to neglect. The slack chain wrecks the sprockets on both cams requiring new ones. I would call this particularly troublesome. However I will concede that it is not as common as I may have been led to believe. I said "if not maintained correctly." The prospective purchaser needs to ascertain with relevant paperwork that attention has been paid to this detail as no one is going to let you whip off the cam cover to have a look. When I bought my 944S in 1994 I was shown the reciept for £150 to replace the timing chain and tensioner. Compared to going to a reputable chip manufacturer and soldering in another 15 to 20 ponies, that is a lot of extra worry. If I could be bothered to search I could probably find the articles I am looking for, but those who know me also know my integrity is of the highest order and I don't post uninformed replies. It is, after all, my humble opinion, which is clearly at odds with your own experiences.

What about the other differences with the 968 engine? Don't they have stronger con-rods and a stronger block?

I think the 968 also has oil squirters to cool the pistons. Another nice refinement or an indication that they had bigger plans for the engine?

How much extra power can you get from the 944S2 simply by a de-cat??

If the original is good not that much but if it is breaking up & clogged depends how bad it is

Now an apology. I am never too big to admit a mistake, and just to right a wrong, of course the S2 already has the same cam-shaft drive as a 968 but without the variocam so anyone with an S2 already has the same responsibilty to maintain the tensioner in good order, so to suggest avoiding the 968's variocam because of its complexity is completely misleading on my part. Apologies to "Big Dave UK" when you talk on the forum so much, inevitably, something is bound to slip out of the wrong orifice.

Not much in the way of peak power, but those who have had a de-cat and chip and run on 98RON have dyno'd with a few extra horses all the way through the lower rev range and reported the car is more responsive and quicker to pick up.

Take a look at the N/A table here and then look at the individual graphs listed at the top of the page

I think my Debra Smiths car was the highest recorded bog standard S2 at number 5, all those above it are modified to some extent. Remember that Dynos will always be a few percent out and can't be taken as 100% accurate from one day to the next

Thanks for your reply! One of the jobs I have to do before the next MOT is either repair (weld up) the crack in the pipe at the front of the cat or fit a "de cat".

Good point, probably explains why my car seems to have lost its "performance edge" over recent years.
