968 mirror conversion kit?

Well the only time I find I adjust the offside mirror is when you reverse park so as not to scrape the wheels on the gutter. The heated option is not needed as you implied. It looks like to buy them brand new here will not be much more than one quoted by Porsch-apart UK so I may just go that way. Thanks for the heads up though guys.

The latest Saab's and the new Freelanders mirrors pop down when you select reverse so you can keep an eye on the kerbs and then pop back up to the originally set position afterwards. That is probably the most impressive gadget i've ever seen on a car. Superb.
Much more useful then the black out button for the fascia. I tried mine on the 9-5 for the first time recently after having the car for 2 1/2 years and never using it. Complete waste of time so its not surprising no other car company has copied it. The auto dipping side mirror is a great idea though.
 
some of the mitzzy GTO FTO mirrors look way better than the Porsche I think I saw a golf one that looked pretty good even a Rover mirror ? not sure about that one though. Try looking at all the car mirrors on the way to work next time. Most mirror brackets accommodate a reasonable change in attitude/angle to match the 944 door.
regarding the painting not sure I understand the logic as you can hardly expect to be able to buy a 968 to match your paintwork unless its white red or black lol

I have already been down this route, problem 1 is that many cars have the mirror mounted on the corner of the window frame rather then the door. Problem 2 is getting a base to match with the door without some form of door or mount customisation. With the mirror removed one can see how much of a swiss cheese Porsche made of the door.

I had the idea about a year ago of changing to golf clipper/mk1 style mirrors as fitted on the cup cars (and SC-RS interestingly). However I haven't as yet managed to find the base, I asked a guy with a 924 carrera gts but he felt that it was a custom part (I think he was a bit bemused when I told him the mirror part looks identical to early golf). Believe me I did spend a very long time looking at every car going that has door mounted mirrors.
 
Anyone seen the wing top mounted mirros on the 996 GT1 in this months edition of the PP? I quite like them - it would require much less movement of your vision away from the road and alot less focus change.
 
Just as an aside, but in some context, I find that my internal rear vision mirror is really quite hard to see out of compared to other cars? Am I imagining this or do you have to really turn your eyes quite a long way up and to the left to see what's happening behind? It feels like the mirror should sit more to the right of centre so you can look up more than left if you see what I'm saying? Anyone else have this sensation?

Am I imagining this or do you have to really turn your eyes quite a long way up and to the left to see what's happening behind? It feels like the mirror should sit more to the right of centre so you can look up more than left if you see what I'm saying? Anyone else have this sensation?

I haven't noticed any problem with mine. Are you sure your head is on straight? [8|]

Yes but with a helmet on you would probably knock it all the time. I for one tend to find that with a lid on I tend to catch various parts of the roof quite a lot, and as an example found it almost impossible to flip the visor without some contortion to get the helmet out of the way.
 
I'm the same as Neil - I have to really recline my seat and lean my head forward with the helmet on - and i'm a short arse. However I have no problem with the position of the rear veiw mirror.
 
Sorry to dig this one up again gents, but my mirrors have finally turned up from the wreckers and of course they just chopped the whole motor wiring harness off at the mount. So now I've either got to spend the entire weekend making up a complete new harness with a lot of trial and error, or try in vain to find a spare wiring harness. I know it's a long shot....[:mad:][:mad:][:mad:] This is for a rhd 968 set. Doh!!!

I have some good wingmirrors on my S2. They are heated (and turn on with the rear-window-defrost switch, as already posted - someone obviously wired them into the correct circuit) and are also electrically adjustable.

They also work quite well - OK, not the best positioned to see in, but not half bad. And they give a good field of vision as well. (Nothing to compare with the view of a set of 944 rear haunches in the wingmirror, eh?) They don't flip down when you put it into reverse tho' (although this was an option on the E46 BMW's as well, I believe).

They also seem to suit the slightly slabby-square design of car.

They're called the original mirrors, and I quite like them!
