981 Cayman on its way

Likewise, overall a very nice looking Porsche but not keen on the new hatch, let's hope it's better when it arrives. On another point I had a sit in a new Boxster and found that the higher console and gear lever position seemed nicely set which should make for a quick gearchange since it's closer to the wheel should manual be chosen.

http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/Secret-new-cars/Search-Results/Spyshots/Porsche-Cayman-2012-spy-shots-of-the-next-gen-sports-coupe/ This is closest to the real thing yet seen, like the front end, not sure about the rear though. Only 5 days and 6 hrs to go until the LA show launch and no more disguises.

Whilst my car was in the dealers yesterday I was given a 981 Boxster 'S' with PDK It's brilliant, but I have to say, an element of rawness has been engineered out it. It's bigger, roomier cabin, centre console is a major improvement but the armrest is lower, the lack of cabin squeaks is a major plus to improve the feeling of build quality. The handling is sublime and the body/chassis control over ridges and pot holes is gob smackingly amazing, especially due to the fact this car was fitted with 20" wheels and had 'normal' suspension on it! BUT, getting back in to my 987 CS I realised just what the new 981 lacked, rawness, involvement and spirit! The PDK is an amazing piece of kit, truley amazing. Quick, linear and smooth, but I think in a Porsche it's wrong! The new 981 Cayman will be brilliant I'm sure of that but for me it'll be manual and I hope that the rawness and spine tingly engine note is still there! Can't wait to see one. Roll on the LA motor show where it's being launched!

It looks to me that they are taping around the hatch glass to disguise it, which makes it look smaller. At least, I hope that's what they are doing!

Actually Richard I was thinking of the fact that it isn't recessed so much but in the latest pictures it would appear that the black band on the inner side of the glass is rather wide when the window could be larger, also I'm not sure about the rear spoiler which seems to operate on a hinge as in the Chrysler Crossfire! I much prefer the original Cayman type. But, I do like the front and the side intakes. No doubt it will be a great car. When it arrives.[8|]

Kevan, It looks like the opening hatch is going to be only the glass area thus leaving a big lip between the bumper and the lifting edge of the hatch. I wonder how practical that is going to be if you are not tall enough to reach it when it's fully open, will it need an electric closer option like the Cayenne? Chris

Looking again I think it is going to the whole hatch area that opens not just the glass window, but it will be a much bigger lid than presently.

Like others, I rather like the recessed hatch on our cars but the designers always have to do something to differentiate the new from the old. Interestingly, to me the raised roofline and less prominant rear haunches have made the new car look bulkier at the rear and more like a 911 in profile (not necessarily a bad thing). But to balance this effect, removing the requirement to use the 911 doors has allowed the designers to introduce those very interesting scalloped doors/intake combination - terrific..! Watch out 991....there'll soon be a new kid on the block.! Jeff

Chris, there are some good views of the new rear hatch arrangement here: http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/Secret-new-cars/Search-Results/Spyshots/Porsche-Cayman-2012-spy-shots-of-the-next-gen-sports-coupe/ It looks a much bigger glass area than that on our cars (if you ignore the black masking). Jeff

http://www.autoevolution.com/news/2013-porsche-cayman-981-caught-undisguised-video-52177.html Here are the latest views, not of the hatch area though. Interior looks great, just like the 991. Lets face iit there is no way Porsche are gong to give the S engine the same power rating as the 991 non- S as it would take out the market for the Carrera. I hope its at least 330. Chris

Well done for finding that Chris. Porsche can't hold out much longer can they? The current S and R models have 320hp and 330hp respectively, while the 981 Boxster S has 315hp, so I would guess that the 981 Cayman will have 325hp, or perhaps 330hp if we're lucky. As to the new "corporate" interior, I'm not totally convinced; although it does look much smarter and more modern of course. When I drove a 991 some time ago I thought that the placement of switches on the centre console was ergonomically suspect because you need to look down to your left to find the appropriate button, taking your eyes off the road in so doing. Of course, I accept that once you're familiar with the set-up it will become second nature but still, a poor design concept in my opinion. Jeff

Yes, it's keep your eyes on the web for the next 3 days. Did you see the great scolloped doors and side intake? I think it's looks are going to beat the 991. Chris

Looks as though the first leak has arrived: http://www.planet-9.com/981-chat/75788-spied-981-cayman-first-photos-prior-la-auto-show-14.html#post679665 Seems as though it's 275/325hp for the 2.7/3.4S. Jeff

Jeff, Well, this looks like another artist's impression in a French magazine rather than a leak. Who's to say the power figures are accurate? It's photos we want to see! Chris

Who knows Chris, but we'll find out tomorrow because it's Press Day and they'll have to announce it then. I'm really surprised that there's not been an official leak of some kind by now though. They've really kept the lid on this. Jeff

I just received an email from Chris Craft, UK MD with details of the new 981 Cayman confirming price details and opening orderimg immediately to be taken from local dealers. Yet to read it all. This is before the officlai launch in LA due at 8pm. Has anyone else received this too? Chris

Yup. Just received mine too. As expected, 2.7/275hp and 3.2S/325hp. Cayman £39,694.00 (inc. VAT at 20%) Cayman S £48,783.00 (inc. VAT at 20%) Pics look the much the same as in the Fench magazine. Also: "The new models also have a SPORT mode fitted as standard, delivering sharpened responses at the push of a button". I presume that means Sport Chrono is fitted as standard. Jeff

Jeff, Yes, just like the Boxster. I can't find any pictures of the whole car, just carefully chosen bits like the lights. I think this is because the official launch will show off the whole car for the first time, that's the way they do it. Keep an eye on the web this evening. We will have to wait until 13 March to see it over here. Chris
