981 Cayman to Shake off Boxster Coupe Image?

ORIGINAL: flat6 Good choice of wheels and seats. Did you go for 2.7 or 3.4? White is the new black. Perfect[:)] Did you consider painting those Carrera S wheels in black to contrast with the white body. My biased opinion of course:ROFLMAO: Be sure to start a new thread when you get it[;)]
It's an S, like my Gen II. Yes, I did consider the platinum finish as black is not an option, but the sales guy said I wouldn't like them. He was right - look like they sprayed them with gold coloured underseal, nasty rough and matt finish. I agree black would suit the car. One reason I went for white is it has lots of black plastic bits which remain unpainted and they contrast nicely. The wheels suit the arches which are designed around 20 inch wheels and the tyres are about 30 pds more. I believe the basic 19ins are Cayman only, so cant be seen in the flesh yet. Chris

ORIGINAL: Motorhead 6 I see that Porsche charge the princely sum of £1,012 on the 987 to supply black-painted wheels but it's not yet a listed option on the 981. I'm sure that a body shop would charge less than half that price. Jeff
Oh right. I just assumed as it is available on the 981 Boxster (for £801). May be a mistake on the Cayman configurator not to include it. Only thing with an after market paint job is, will they be able to replicate the cool looking silver edge?

It's really strange that they can't ship the same painted black wheel that they have already arranged logistics for on the Boxster and 991. Big company procedures do take time to implement. If you really want it perhaps you can get your OPC to investigate when it'll become available or if there's a way to put the request in manually. The new Cayman S wheel is like the gen 1 Cayman S wheel which was styled on the Carrera GT wheel. So I expect it's simple design will look good.

Very smart 6 but I always wonder why they don't paint the whole wheel, including the inner rim. I think that the silver edge is obtained by skimming the wheel after painting, after which a sealing lacquer coat is then applied. I had this done many years ago on my Clio Williams (a great little car!) gold wheels when I had them refurbished and I'd be surprised if you'd have to pay much more than £500 for a similar paint job today. A bit tricky to repair if you kerb them though, since the edge has to be machined rather than just patched with filler and over-sprayed. Jeff

I always wondered how they did it. Thanks As for not painting the inner rim, that's a good question. I've no idea. Maybe it saves them a few pence per wheel in paint [:D]

In fairness, the £801 for the wheel paint job on the Boxster does include the coloured wheel crests (£109). As you say, I can't see why the option's not yet included on the Cayman configurator though. Jeff

I'm not sure it suits me, too sporty image for my time of life, if you know what I mean. I will ask the OPC the unquestioned though, good pont.

Although they look good when new Chris, one problem with black wheels is that like dark-coloured bodies, stone chips make them look as though they've got a white rash..! Much less noticeable with silver wheels. Jeff
