981 GT4 Gearbox and other mods review

Initial impressions on the road?

I thought they marketed it as unaffecting the auto-blip too. Any reason you didn't opt for the longer 6th too?

Update on this ... having examined the original pinion which had done 29,500 miles, there is a clear deterioration to the case hardening which would have become noisy and may also have caused secondary damage / wear within the gearbox. Although I have had the benefit of a 50bhp power increase for the last 15,000 miles, I can't believe that the component specification of this gear is any different from that of any other Porsche GT car ... so it is in my view a potential future issue which I believe I have cured ... since the crown wheel and pinion came in a Capricorn box ??

Mine was done by Strasse. The auto blip would need to "know" the gearing changes to be able to select the correct blip revs, on my car the auto blip is aware of data it does not expect and therefore does nothing, and does not show an error message. So far !

Are you aware of an enhancement to this ?

My other concern is that I would not want any aspect of the engine mapping changing to be sure that my revised engine tune remains intact.

I didn't go for the revised sixth because at the moment this appears to be insanely high and being used to racing cars, I'm really not concerned to sit at 70mph and around 3000rpm ... the car is a little noisy anyway, but infinitely more comfortable :)

With the lightened flywheel and clutch my initial impressions on the road are of how seamless and fluid the car is ... the gear change is possibly the best I have ever experienced but with more of them ... getting used to double de-clutching and heel and toeing is a pain free, tactile and intuitive process that magnifies my involvement and engagement with the car. From a performance aspect the car was quick anyway, ... once you are under 4 seconds to 60 I don't know how the mind can define the 10ths, but suffice to say that it pulls like a train, even in 6th at 3000rpm (around the legal limit !).

Do you mean Strasse manufactured the hardware? (as you posted the speeds in gear pics which had the RPM Technik logo)

I mean that the kit came from RPM and it was fitted by Strasse in Leeds who look after my car.

Update on the car informatics ... the Auto Blip (in Sports mode) and the Gear Change Assist no longer do anything ... and the car indicates the need to up-change at every opportunity, easily ignored and never ever used !

MPG seems to be around 22 on a 100 mile round trip of very bendy and hilly roads ... but I love it.

Implus ... I see that you have only just started posting as a guest ... what is your angle of interest in this ?

I’m thinking of doing the mod to my own 718 Spyder. Strictly for road driving so performance less of a priority. Ideally would’ve liked to do a 1-5 gear set change but not sure of any vendors who are currently offering this at a comparable price point?

I’m not sure about a 1-5 gear set either but I’m still pleased as punch with my new 3-5 set. See original review on page one. It’s made road use so much more fun.

Interesting, ... I was amazed at how quickly the new gearing and feel of the car just felt second nature.

For road driving the gears are just held for less time with the feeling of greater driver involvement ... changes are so slick.

I will have the car on track at Oulton for the RS day ... the gears should be perfectly stacked for this so let's see ?

The long gearing was the one real persistent criticism of the manual GT4 ... and the car now just feels so right !

Update on Oulton ... well being out of practice in the GT4 I was slow ... but having fun.

The circuit is all in 3rd and the top of 4th, with 5th an option towards the middle of Lakeside and the Pit Straight.

2nd is only an option following a slow car through the slow corners to overtake on the way out ... so really the story should be to pick up a little extra speed through Cascaded and Deers Leap and pick up 5th earlier !

On the road, the car is wonderful. 20mpg around country lanes, 27mpg on the journey across to Oulton ... 3200rpm at 70 mph ... so as previously a new learning process.

On the question of pinion wear, speaking to RPM the solution appears to be gearbox oil changes in tandem with engine oil changes ... for me this is at around 3500 miles. Their cars have Gripper LSD's ... mine remains standard because it is also a road car ... hence there should be less heat soak into my transaxle when fully loaded.

To be continued :)
