986 to 987 ?

Hi Grant
My humble penneth'worth as an owner of a 986S and a 987S (and soon to be a 997S) is that both cars are extremely able and capable driving tools which in the right hands are nigh on unbeatable in their class as all-round sports cars.
The 986 has a more characterful interior, but some of the trim used was sadly not up to the rest of the vehicle (imho), case in point being the stalks for example. However, there are useful areas where the 986 trumps it's more modern brother, one being value for money and the other being the inclusion of a proper spare wheel rather than a tin of industrial strength hair mousse.
The purity of the exhaust note is really in the ear of the beholder, as much as the styling is in the eye - one mans meat etc.
For me, I preferred the improved build quality of the 987, although the Ford Focus air vents were (for me) a little at odds with the rest of the cabin in the 987.
I enjoyed the extra torque of the 987 engine and the more 'pumped-up' haunches, giving a more muscular look, but there again, the original clean and svelte lines of the 986 may very well prove to be a classic. Just depends on whether you want power bulges or toned lines really!!
The glass rear screen of later 986 and the 987 is a particular boon, although I seem to recall there is slightly better visibility in the 987.
Also the ability to 'pop the top' on the move is a real bonus, but then again, the 986 can enjoy this trick courtesy of those nice people at Wilhelmy.
There is no doubt in my mind that the 987 is a decent evolution of a superb concept - it just depends on whether or not the 'original is best' or 'new and improved' features most in your cerebral make up, I suppose.
One thing is for sure though - the Boxster in all it's guises is a superbly balanced and delicate driving machine - my stint in a 997S has made me very much aware of the extra weight at the back, and appreciate more the sublime boxster handling now it's gone.
I guess the message is if you are into 'originals' and enjoy the purity of line and classic concept, and on a 'sensible' budget, then the 986 makes a great deal of sense in all it's guises.
If you crave evolution and the need to embrace latest technology and form and are lucky enough to have the means for a 987, perhaps that's the one for you.
One thing's for sure though - 986 or 987 - you'll always see a Boxster pilot smiling!!
Good luck with your delicious conundrum!!:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

That's just the sort of thing I meant. A rational comparison of the two cars.

An excellent composition.

For me this is what makes porsche great, it's an evolution, what i mean is that I can look at the modern day Porsches and still see the car I dreamed about as a boy. I've heard this debate so many times over various models 924 v 944, 944 v 968, 911sc v 964 and so on, and they are ALL good cars in there own right. I think that it doesn't matter which Porsche you're in, theres just something very special about Porsche.

My point basically is that it's good to discuss the various strengths and weaknesess of one model over another, infact I boar my friends on a regular basis! but what does get my goat is when people make comments such as "the interior looks like it should be in a jap camper van" it's just silly, I'm asuming that people are asking for a balanced view in order to make the right decision?? not to invite people to slag one model off against another?

Ant.
P.S. is there such a thing as a japanese camper van? can't think of one off hand.

Wow - imho, that white Boxster looks STUNNING!!! What a refreshing change from the hundreds of black/blue/grey/silver pootling around London... If I were in the market for a new Boxster, I'd definitely consider that combo.

Very, very sorry Jcb I did miss quote you my mistake I've just had a look and what you actually said was the interior looks like it shoud be in a "japanese motor home" although I don't quite see what difference it makes? or how that changes my point?

I should explain why this winds me up,

1/ This kind of comment can really upset some owners and I've even seen instances where people have started to wonder if they've made the right decision in buying the car they currently have.
2/ Alot of people now turn to the web to research on a prospective car purchase, surely we should be encouraging people to embrace the porsche brand? I mean if we arn't enthusiastic about Porsches new offering how can we expect them to be?

i'm sure I am living in an idealistic world, and the last thing I want to do is upset anyone, I just can't see the point of comparing a Porsche with a japanese motor home.

Hey Ant I'm not upset but you are wandering off again.

What I said was that in my opinion the 987 dash would look better in a Japanese Motor Home. I threw in 'Japanese' as a little tongue in cheek humour which I'm sure regulars here will recognise. This is a forum where we encourage people to have an opinion.

I'm here to help people find answers, assist Mark, Claire and Nic in finding new ways for you guys to enjoy yourselves.

It's not my job to promote the Porsche brand and it's not my job, nor do I try, to influence people as to how they spend their money. If I say I'm stating an opinion that's what I'm doing. If I am stating fact then I endeavour to tell the truth.

I love the look of the 997 and I'm pleased that Porsche have managed to evolve the 996 in to an object that still appeals to me.

I don't like the changes to the interior of the 987 in relationship to the 986 interior and that's all I'm saying. I'm sure that everyone who has bought one is either happy with it or can make the compromise.

Back in the real world it's difficult for me to get too excited about the 'Brand' knowing full well that they still haven't solved the RMS and you'll still be expected to fork out to replace it should car go out of warranty despite the fact that its an inherent design fault.

JCB..

Blimey John, you are in a "grumpy", I only said put down your hand bags chaps, just a bit of fun, no need to remove the post!!
Having said this it is a dark cold winter Monday so I'll forgive you.

Some very interesting points and ripostes here chaps, and I have enjoyed very much the conversation pinging back and forth, and it reminds me of some wonderful debates over a pint of Warty Badger with some 'petrolhead/enthusiast' pals.
For me, this is the very essence of a healthy and stimulating forum - if everyone just agreed, life wouldn't half be boring, eh?
Rather than view this as an 'argument' this is really a healthy debate with each putting their own view into the melting pot, and there are some very compelling viewpoints from each contributor.
I think I have made my opinion clear, and it's good to see healthy dialogue in action.
Vive la forum - and all who sail in her![:D]
Regards
Rob[;)]
PS - I do agree with John about the RMS - that really is rather shoddy behaviour which, coming from the worlds most profitable car manufacturer, is (IMHO) rather disappointing and shameful.

It is indeed true that I am a fully paid up member of the Gloucestershire branch of the GOMA but in this case I didn't think your comment was appropriate. Hopefully debate will be allowed to flourish without recourse to matching accessories.

I feel like a boxer at the end of 12 rounds where mutual respect is shown ( well maybe 5 rounds)[:D] Also I would just like to say that this forum does enhance my Porsche ownership and am very greatful to everyone who keeps it going.

Anthony.
P.S. just bought my 2001 996 2 weeks ago after selling my 968 to a friend of mine, and I think I may have a RMS issue due to a little oil on the garage floor[] still very much in love with this car though, i feel like I've got a film star locked in the garage[:)]

It would be very dull around here if we all thought the same. [:)]

Sorry to hear of the RMS (see the new topic.)
