Its amazing, isn't it, how these magazines draw conclusions from photos of cars that are deliberately disguised and will probably bare little resemblance to production models.

Porsche Boxster Speedster

Special edition version of Porsche's popular two seater is on the way

28th April 2009

Porsche may be hard at work developing an entirely new Boxster "" but the current car is going out in style! This is a Speedster version, which gets a dramatic new look with a pair of roll hoops at the rear, just like the classic 911 Speedster of the Eighties and Nineties.

Porsche engineers have done their best to disguise the aerodynamic look with a fake rear roof section but look closely at these pictures and you can just make out the twin humps which run from the rear end to the driver and passenger headrests. In addition, the Speedster will also boast a lower windscreen and a modified canvas hood.

Power will come from same 299bhp 3.4-litre engine as the Boxster S Porsche Design Edition 2 special edition. Expect to see the new model at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

My first thought was that maybe they were reintroducing the techquipment speedster humps. However the side windows do look different too... (Not just Cayman ones are they?) This definitely points to a different roof being tried. Maybe it's a folding hardtop...

Definitely not a folding tin top ... no space for it to fold into and would weigh a ton compared to a cloth top and "Speedsters" are historically about less weight, less kit and in recent times a lot more money [:D]

Didn't realise there were more pictures... There's also more here: http://www.evo.co.uk/news/evospyshots/235523/porsche_boxster_speedster.html

Porsche has a patent out on a multipanel folding metal roof design, so don't rule out a hard top of some description. As to that speedster look, there were mules running around in gen 1 bodies over a year ago - given the unpopularity of the old speedster humps i doubt they'd try again.

Journo's scoop a potential new model Boxster but then state the running gear will be from the old 3.4 non dfi lump! I don't think their following info is correct at all [][] "It will use the 299bhp 3.4-litre flat-six engine from the [link=http://www.evo.co.uk/carreviews/cargrouptests/223842/mercedes_slk350_v_porsche_boxster_rs60.html]Boxster RS60[/link] and Boxster S Design Edition 2, a limited-run model that didn’t make it to the UK. It gains the exhaust tweaks that featured on [link=http://www.evo.co.uk/carreviews/cargrouptests/223842/mercedes_slk350_v_porsche_boxster_rs60.html]the RS60[/link], ensuring the Speedster should sound pretty good too. Expect to see it at the Frankfurt motor show in September."

Daro I see this article is headed "All-new 2011 model as well as a new Speedster version" but its dated 18th November 2008 so don't know why you posted this with the title "987 Gen 2 "Speedster"". Not wishing to be a smarta..e but the details of the Gen 2 engines were not made known until late December if I remember correctly. This is just confusing isn't it? Chris

http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle/AllCars/243379/ Boxster Speedster spied Thursday, September 17, 2009 Porsche is to revive the iconic Speedster shape as a send-off for the current Boxster range. The limited run of keen-edged Boxsters nod towards the 356 Speedster and 550 Spyder of the 1950s, which were the inspiration for the original Boxster concept. As our spy pics show, the Boxster’s front splitter has a sharper rake and the rear camouflage hides bulbous Speedster bumps. See the full high-res Porsche Speedster gallery The windscreen should be much lower on Speedster models, but it is difficult to see the difference on the Boxster, indicating the standard screen could be used for practicality and to save money. Weight-saving should feature throughout the Speedster to enhance performance, so expect a stripped-out interior with lighter materials. In a further link with the past, new Fuchs-style alloys, as seen on the 911 Sport Classic, could find their way to the Boxster Speedster. The roof is expected to be a simplified version of the standard item. Power comes from the established 3.4-litre flat six, with minor tweaks adding a few extra horsepower.

Porsche Boxster 'R' (2009): the CAR spy photos By Ben Pulman Maybe they don't want him putting the roof up hence roll-cage and the new handle Boxster "R for roll cage!!" :ROFLMAO: [link=http://www.motorauthority.com/pictures/1035248_spy-shots-porsche-boxster-speedster_gallery-1#100229029]http://www.motorauthority.com/pictures/1035248_spy-shots-porsche-boxster-speedster_gallery-1#100229029[/link] [link=http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/Secret-new-cars/Search-Results/Spyshots/Porsche-Boxster-R-2009-scooped/]http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/Secret-new-cars/Search-Results/Spyshots/Porsche-Boxster-R-2009-scooped/[/link] 17 September 2009 13:00 CAR's spies have caught a new Porsche Boxster 'R' attacking the Nurburgring, and our sources inside Porsche have revealed that this open-top is a special, harder version of the sports car that will be revealed by the end of 2009, probably at the LA show. We don't yet know the definitive name of the new harder Porsche, although insiders have referred to the go-faster version as the Boxster R. And how does this new Porsche Boxster R differ from any other Porsche Boxster? Externally this special edition differs from its banal brothers thanks to a lower front bumper (with single rather than double strakes across the intakes – all important to the people that might buy this car), plus new side intakes and a bigger rear spoiler. And beneath that disguised rear deck is thought to be a double-bubble Speedster-style hump. Under the skin this new Porsche is expected to use the 3.4-litre flat-six currently found in the Boxster S, but with a few tweaks to lift power closer to 320bhp. This Boxster also sits lower on sports suspension, features new alloys wheels and comes with Porsche’s PCCB ceramic brakes as standard. There will also be interior tweaks akin to the cabin of the fettled 911 Sport Classic unveiled earlier this year. There's no word on the price, but the 250 Sport Classic 911s each cost over £140k, so this Boxster could end up being pretty costly. Expect to see it unveiled at the 2009 LA auto show in early December, one year on from the revealing of the facelifted Boxster and Cayman.

Are the roll-cage and ceramic brakes to protect the test pilots whilst hammering around the ring? http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/spyshots/242023/porsche_boxster_speedster.html Here's a blast from the past! Porsche are planning to revive the legendary Speedster badge on its ever popular Boxster and we've got the proof. These latest shots show a heavily disguised prototype version of the Speedster, thought to be a final send off for the current generation Boxster before the third iteration of the convertible is unveiled in late 2011. Major exterior changes include a lower windscreen, redesigned canvas roof and the addition of two classic Speedster humps running the length of the rear engine cover. With this year marking the 55th anniversary of the original Speedster, many are speculating an official unveiling before the year is out.
