I think this is a really good point. Having test driven quite a few variants of the GTS in recent weeks, one thing I notice - that compared to my Boxter S with sports exhaust, the noise in the cab of the GTS is much quieter. Maybe an obvious thing to say, as you're basically sitting next to the engine, and its a soft roof - but it is much much louder (albeit a different sound). Of course, outside the car, its a different ball game ...BigCat said:This "noise" issue between the two model generations of the GTS may be a bit misleading.
What you will mainly hear inside the Gen 1 GTS is the induction noise piped in by the flap on top of the engine that enters the car under the shelf at the back, Porsche call this the Sound Symposer. On the outside the noise from the Sports Exhaust is very loud when the car is driven hard but that also applies to the Gen 2 GTS, however what you wont get is the induction noise of the Gen 1. Having owned a Gen 1 C2 GTS and now a Gen 2 C4 GTS I much prefer the latter in every respect, it's much easier to get moving quickly and the range on a full tank is significantly better than the previous car and that's a comparing with a 2WD.
I watched my son driving the GTS on Friday at the Silverstone PEC and can vouch for the fact that the exhaust noise on full throttle is very loud.
Personally, I prefer the prospect of letting the car I overtook hear as well as see what went past
That's a good thing about the PEC, as listening to the 718 with and without the sports exhaust totally convinced me it was an essential option ... of course it does pre-suppose you want your car to be noisy ...
