Going down a similar route for my 981 BGTS: replacing Sport Design wheel with 718 GT M/F with drive mode selector, and the GPSAdapterX to make it all work.
Hoped to have it all done prior to a European road trip a couple of weeks ago, but alas it was a real faff to try and install 2 new [GPSAdapetr] wires into the “new” steering wheel’s orange multi plug - I couldn’t release the purple “lock” part of the orange connector, and continued attempts just saw that small piece of purple plastic disintegrate. To add insult to injury one of the new wires went into the spare terminal position but was the wrong bloody one - managed to extract it. However, the 2nd of the 2 new wires just will not go fully into nor seat in the orange connector. Oh, and I’d already successfully removed centre console button panel and installed the second adapter in there of course, before hitting the problem with the wheel itself. Could have left that adapter plugged in, but went back in and removed it as I was concerned about error codes being thrown up with that in but nothing on the steering wheel….
Gave up as was running out of time ahead of the trip.
Bought a used wheel harness on my return knowing it wasn’t right, but crucially had the same orange connector. My thought was to disassemble the damaged one on my new to me wheel, disassemble the connector from the used harness I’d just bought, and make good ie insert all the wires on my new wheel, to the new connector….
Then common sense kicked in and I realised that extracting all the wires on my new 718 wheel from the damaged connector, in one piece was likely not going to work well and I’d end up buggering up some wires in the process! And there are a lot of wires to swap out and over!
Instead I’m going order a new steering wheel harness for my wheel from local OPC, but concern is there is no part number on the existing wiring harness on my new-to-me 718 GT wheel.
I know finding the wheel and airbag was tough - so many part number variants depending on manual or PDK, m/f or not, whether car is Sports Chrono or not, heated or not etc. Are there so many variants of the wheel wiring harness or just a few?
My new wheel actually has heating, but since I don’t have access to PIWIS etc, I ordered the GPS adapter that is NOT for heated wheel, I’ll do without.
Sorry for the long rant, just needed somewhere to dump! If anyone has any soothing info regarding keeping me on the right path regarding the s/w wiring harness, I’d appreciate it!
From what I’d read, and what Lee Paul (GPS Adapters) said, once I get the adapters installed everything will work - ie m/f on 5he wheel, as well as the drive mode dial. Shame about the heating since the new wheel has it, but as I said, I don’t know anywhere that could code it all in - plus nervous about losing existing coded updates - cruise, rain sensor etc.
