993 Average fuel consumption

non VR cars have shorter gearing ... from those I have spoken too who have both cars, the non VR engines are meant to feel a bit more revvy & do sound different to the VR. The VR has a bit more lower down grunt. General concensus seem to be that in reality the differences were subtle

For the recoed im really enjoying the car and not pineing for my 997.

I'm afraid after ten months absence, I still haven't stopped pining for my 993, and it doesn't get any better when Steve the new owner goes and takes nice photos of it, one of which ends up being used as the cover shot on Porsche Post! [:eek:]

That was a good picture.[8D]

Just to show how anal I am, here are some of my recent MPG figures, along with the octane mix in the tank (I can't always find VPower) and the class of road I was driving (although "A" does not show if it was a blast up the A82 or idling around the town):

MPG, Octane Mix, Road Class
25.488 98.7 A
24.850 97.2 A
20.450 98.5 A
21.552 98.8 A
22.284 99.0 A
22.021 99.0 A
20.901 96.6 A
22.614 98.3 A
21.751 98.9 A
18.770 99.0 A
21.973 97.3 A
22.738 98.6 A
21.372 97.4 A
24.401 98.7 M
23.370 99.0 M
22.579 97.3 A
22.285 98.4 A
22.280 97.2 A
22.778 98.4 A
18.336 98.9 A
23.280 97.2 A
22.519 98.6 A
22.455 97.3 M
23.793 98.7 M
23.866 98.9 A
18.384 99.0 A
23.533 99.0 M

So - they are all of the place...

Now I must get out and drive!

[FONT=verdana,geneva"]At the risk of sounding like I've missed the point, when you say you've reset the computer, have you reset all 3 resettable trip functions, i.e. mileage, average speed and average fuel consumption?

When I set off on a proper trip, I drive 5 miles (to get things warmed up) and then reset all 3 trip functions. On a clear, traffic-jam free run, e.g. Reading to Barnsley to visit the outlaws, at an average speed of around 70mph over 180 miles, I usually get 28-29mpg.

These figures are door-to-door (except for the first 5 miles) on motorway, country and town roads.

Mathew, I set all parts of the trip computer whilst the car was sat in the garage cold! Could answer my questions really couldn't it!

I heard last week that the V-ram cars have a different gearbox, with slightly taller ratios, due to Swiss noise regulations ?

A V-Ram owner driving my early non V-Ram car found it noticeably higher geared.

Maurice can no doubt confirm ?

Not quite that simple .. US and Swiss cars only ever had the one gearbox .. G50 / 20
3.818 / 2.048 / 1.407 / 1.118 / 0.921 / 0.775 with 3.444 final drive
Until Dec 1994 when 5th changed to 0.928

Early RoW cars had the G50 / 21
3.818 / 2.150 / 1.560 / 1.242 / 1.027 / 0.820 with 3.444 final drive
Until Dec 1994 when 5th changed to 1.024

Simple comparison = same first, then G21 has slightly shorter gearing .. 2nd to 3rd biggest difference. Torque spread of VRam easily compensates ..

Later RoW cars had the G50 or G64 (4WD) / 20

but MY '96 cars had 3.818 / 2.048 / 1.407 / 1.118 / 0.929 / 0.775 gears on a 3.444 final drive

'97 spec G50 / 20 allegedly has a 5th of 0.928

TT was 3.818 / 2.150 / 1.560 / 1.212 / 0.937 / 0.750 on the usual final drive - looks pretty damn good ..

RS had 3 different (again) G50s - taller firsts (3.154) much better for the track
Eg G50 / 31 has 3.154 / 2.000 / 1.522 / 1.242 / 1.024 / 0.821

Its certainly not just geasring but characteristics of the engine. The Service Information Technik volumes confirm that M64 / 21 (VRam) engines were introduced with the MY 96 cars, ie August '95 build. Of course, whatever stock would be used up .. [8|]

Tomorrow's quiz will be - what are the redline speeds in each gear for all variants .. [8D]

cheers, Maurice [:D]

I think my friend's (German) car is MY 96, so that would make sense. If I have read your post correctly, there is likely to be a difference between 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th gears between my MY94 car and his MY96 car - as follows.

My car RoW 94 3.818 / 2.150 / 1.560 / 1.242 / 1.027 / 0.820
His car MY 96 3.818 / 2.048 / 1.407 / 1.118 / 0.929 / 0.775

He certainly noticed quite a difference in redline speeds.

Thanks

Mark

That implies quite a big difference in top speed if all the final drives are the same (vram is claimed to be 168 from memory which would make the 94 car only 159mph and I'm sure it's higher than that - does it have a different red line?)

The driver's manual claims a top speed of 168 for the non vram but I've seen re-prints of contemporary road tests getting 172 mph.

[FONT=verdana,geneva"]David - I hope so.

To be honest, I don't think my '5-mile warm-up' trick would account for your figures. I think you should do a 'manual' check (sorry if this is obvious), i.e.

1. run the tank to close to empty
2. refill with 97 RON - the petrol I use, so therefore comparative with my figures
3. reset all 3 trip functions & note total miles
4. run the tank to close to empty (say, 300 miles) & note new total miles
5. compare trip miles vs. difference in total miles, calculate actual mpg and compare with computer mpg. Etc.

[FONT=verdana,geneva"][FONT=verdana,geneva"]Re. my earlier post, my figures of an average speed of around 70mph over 180 miles, getting 28-29mpg, are achieved with two occupants, loaded with luggage, wine, and [FONT=verdana,geneva"][FONT=verdana,geneva"]dependent on time of year,[FONT=verdana,geneva"][FONT=verdana,geneva"][FONT=verdana,geneva"] presents or flowers. Definitely not stripped![FONT=verdana,geneva"][FONT=verdana,geneva"]

Apropos nought, and just for completeness, I don't drive like a big girl's blouse, I believe that the speed limit is something to which I should restrict myself and not something to which I should aspire, that every vehicle in front of me is a potential challenge, and that getting caught going over the ton is a license issue (the mother-in-law, Babs, is a magistrate!). I brake late and hard and my disks are shiny and unpitted. I have fun.

Incidentally, I once took Babs out for a spin - she screamed frequently and hid her face when a police car passed in the opposite direction. Then my father-in-law, Bill, a lay Methodist preacher, asked if he could come for a spin too - he was grey and quiet for hours afterwards. We don't talk about it much. Aaarh - happy days.

Good luck

Wow. All the literature quotes 168 mph max for the non V-ram car. I doubt the 171 max for vario cars is at redline. What we need now is for someone to post the maximum speeds in gears.

I think its in the back of the owners manual? I'm not at home at the moment to check, but there are some graphs in the back with speeds in gears

Of course we need the full details - NV, Vario, Swiss, US, German etc [:D]

Pete

Yes, I'll have a look . I will still need a VRAM owner to post, though, because my manual is for a non VRAM '94 car.

Mine is pretty non scientific... but I seem to be getting about 21 mpg town driving... and on fast cross country hoons - sorry I mean runs - it seems to be about 23mpg... (I have a very heavy Right foot)

Mine's a 97 VRAM car and the book states the following:

Manual
Carrera S VMAX 168mph
Carrera VMAX 171mph
Carrera 4 VMAX 171mph

Tip
Carrera S VMAX 165mph
Carrera VMAX 168mph
Carrera 4 VMAX 168mph

Speeds in gear Manual
1st = 60km 37.28mph
2nd = 113km 70.21mph
3rd = 165km 102.53mph
4th = 208km 129.25mph
5th = 250km 155.34mph
6th = 298km 186.17mph

Speeds in gear Tip
Speeds in gear Manual
1st = 80km 49.71mph
2nd = 133km 82.64mph
3rd = 202km 125.52mph
4th = 275km 170.88mph

Of course it's impossible to hit the maximum in top gear hence the published VMAX is lower than the in gear maximum shown.
