993 RS TYRES ?

What should i fit guys ? rear tyres have seen better days , the car will be used on track days as well as occasional road use , dont want tyres that will last 5 minutes BUT i do fancy sticky , moment its running pirelli ,

SO WHAT DO YAH RECKON ?

are these good for road and track andy ? just checked at demon tweeks and they dont do 295/40/zr18 , this is the size currently on the car , but i think the car should have 295/35/ZR18 ..will have to look into this ...where do you get them from ?
 
Maurice 245 fronts??? What will that do to the handling?....You can still tell the difference on a C2S I assume? [;)]

I managed to pick up some rare 225/40/18 SSR from them......now cluttering up the garage until I find a car?

Have you looked at Dunlop SSRs ... ?

No longer available in dead stock sizes but, now that i've got mine I'll pass on they have 245/35 and 265/35 18s for not a lot of money. I've just installed and like .... [;)]

The 245 fronts fit without rubbing, the 265 rears are wider than one would expect, and the rolling diameters are perfect ...

My recommendation was on the assumption SSR's were no longer available - they are brilliant tyres - 235/40 & 265/35 should be fine.

The Kuhmo's are used a lot in the States on light(ish) cars. I was after some for the my motor, but Burzel said even the medium compound would be too soft for a car as heavy as the GT3. They are available from Camskill.

By the way if a guy called Gary Stuart buys that yellow GT3 you have for sale, you owe me a beer.[;)]
 
Michelin Pilot Sport Cups are available in the standard RS 18" sizes (225/40x18 and 265/35x18) and are a very track focused tire.

Yes I am. I'll bolt the passenger seat back in. Could be rather slippy on the sport cups if the weather is as bad as forecast.

If kumho,use the hard compound for general driving and track days,will wear faster than mich cups.
mich cups are probably the best tyre for grip vs wear,they are a good tyre in the wet also,just beware of deep water.
with the rsr rear arches you should be able to go to a 305 or even 315 depending on the brand you choose.
 
The obvious choices are Cup Sports or Corsa's. Cups seem to give slightly grip but scare people in the rain, while the Corsa's seem to be more forgiving in the rain. Corsa's might be slightly better when the weather is cold and there are problems getting heat into the tyres. Cups got particularly bad press as they were sepcced for the BMW CSL and BMW made you sign a disclaimer or else supplied the car with road tyres. There were also all sorts of stories that they would only supply the cups if you had a race licence! So, there was lots of scaremongering coupled with stories of people having "moments" with their CSL's. Bottom line is, with either of these tyres, if its raining hard and your are doing a ton, you could have serious problems with standing water.

The alternative mentioned above is the Kumho's. I cannot comment on sizes, but they are available in medium and hard compound. Last Saturday, Colin Belton was running mediums all round but was doing relatevely short sessions. I have heard that medium fronts and hard rears are the way forward for trackdays, or even hard all round.

The more I look at this, the more I feel that the only way forward is 2 sets of wheels. I was well impressed by the 64RS who came to Oulton with a roofrack on which there were 4 wheels fitted with slicks even if it did look a little "Heath Robinson". What price a proper roof rack adapted to take tyres and wheels[:D]

For a man of your means there can be no option, but to go for the Michelin cups

How come you have acces to all the lightweight Porsche models but no clue on tyres....???/ just wondered!
 
im shopping and always take in advice , im no mastermind at porsche !!.... just like advice and listen !! then go for it ....;-0
 
I cooked my kumhos last weekend in 5 laps,med allround.
Hard compound would be fine all round,med fronts ok early and late season with cooler track temps.
michellin cups are very good in the wet,dont listen to all the bull about cups,they are very good especially in the wet,if the tyres are newish or still have a deep tread,dont be scared off by them in the rain,better than most on track.}
If the tyres are warm,and it rains on you,they are also very good.
Speak to michelin about the one half of the tyre with a differant compound and tread,engineered for the wet.

You can't go far wrong with Pirelli Corsas or Michelin Cups if the car will mainly be used for track days. I use Corsas and they are fine in the wet if you take it fairly easy.

However, why not ring the distributors for sticky Dunlop tyres for advice?

And why not try the DZ02-J tyre, priced somewhere between the SSR and the Corsa/Cup. I am seriously thinking about this tyre next. I bet it is better than the respected D01J.
 
I agree with Simon that 2 sets of wheels is the way to go. One set of MPSC for the dry and one set of ??? for wet days. As I drive the car to events I also found the roof rack idea interesting. I also liked the apperence of the yellow 993RS (might be wrong) arriving at Oulton with the slicks on the roof. Looked focused and purposeful.

In light of the above I have searched the net and think I have a solution. I am not sure whether the rack system will take 4 wheels. I will have to do some measuring before I have a conlcusion on this point. Anyway, here it is.

As the 964/993 has rain gutters the old Thule 951 system should work. To this system it is possible to fit something called a Thule 582 Carried Basket. To me it seems as if the wheels could rest on and be fixed to this basket. If anyone is interested the email address is www.thule.com .
