993 Sports Steering Wheel

I have the standard 4 spoke steering wheel in my C2S and was thinking of changing it for the official Porsche sports steering wheel (which I think is 3 spoke).

Two questions:

Has anyone done this and have any comments, like they wish they hadn't!

And where would you suggest I look to find one. Hopefully not on fleebay.

Thanks for your help.

Bought mine on ebay and waited 30 days before it was delivered by Royal Mail[]

The 3 spoke fits very easily in say 20 minutes. The only thing I would go for if I was to do it again would be to go for the thicker rimmed wheel. They supposedly come in two thicknesses. I bought the one that is the same rim thickness as the one
that came off it. In all honesty, for the money I spent I would keep the old one as is. Others on here swear by them but in all honesty I could think of better mods to spnd my money on.....

Is the 993's 3-spoke a smaller diameter compare with the "standard 4 spoke"? I find it a little large (fine for steering, just not totally ideal for my legs).

Anyone got a link to a picture?

Thanks

Not sure what the 4 spoke diameter is but the 3 spoke ones are 38cm and 993 RS is 36cm ..Cheers Kevin

I had the thicker & smaller diameter RS wheel, which comes without the airbag.

Would recommend it as it improves the look of the cabin and feels better to use than the OEM

Thanks for the responses chaps. At 6'2" I find my legs get in the way of the standard wheel so a slightly smaller wheel would be helpful.

Lee - if you go for the thick rim 996 wheel I might do it at the same time.....have been wanting to do it for ages - maybe Gert would give some discount?

I have a brand new black leather sports wheel together with new & unused airbag (with coloured Porsche crest). For manual cars, RRP being £639 and £392 respectively. Would sell together for £550. Not sure about postage options though as the Post Office don't approve of sending airbags.

About two months ago fitted the black three spoke wheel with crested centre from the 996 to my 993. The interior trim is classic grey as was the four spoke wheel and I was initially concerned about fitting the black wheel. Have no worries at all about doing the same. The black wheel picks up with the black facia of the dashboard and looks more pleasing than the original grey wheel. It looks better and feels a lot better. Got my wheel from Noel Marsh at Cool It who are air con specialists as well as being experts on Porsche left hand drive to right hand drive conversions.

Mike I did exactly the same as you - replaced my classic grey 4 spoker for a black 3 spoke wheel. Looks fine in mine as the C2S interior has a central section of dash in black, so it matches.

The 3 spoke is 5mm smaller than the 4 spoke, so basically the same, but it feels much better and looks better too IMO.

I bought mine new from my OPC, but if you're going secondhand I'd suggest you buy a new airbag to be on the safe side. Takes 10 mins to change, and it's a perfect fit (no bodges).

This is my first post on this forum. I collected my 993 C4 Cabriolet just a couple of days ago and I am very pleased with it. Although I am comfortable in it, at 6ft 3in I find the driving position just a little tight, especially getting my foot onto the clutch pedal. Is there a smaller official Porsche steering wheel, say 36cms, available that comes with an air bag?

On a slightly different tack, is it possible to move the seat runners back a little, as there appears to be about an inch or so room behind the hard backed seat before it touches the carpet?

There must be many tall Porsche drivers around that encounter the same problem.

Any advice would be helpful.

Welcome to 993 ownership [:)]

There isn't a 360mm Porsche airbag wheel, but there is a non-airbag one (from the RS). I think Ruf do a 360mm airbag wheel, but it's not OE, and it's mega £££.

I've heard the seat can be moved back another inch on the runners, although I have no experience of doing this myself. IIRC the seat needs to be unbolted then you will see the different mounting point.

Hi,

think from memory there can be a few different mounting holes already drilled in the runners.
guess the easiest option to take the seats out,
takes the runners off the seat base,
and then re-fit the runner - but further to wards the rear of the seat.

other option, more advanced[:-][8|]
as above,
but instead change the mounting point of the runners onto the floorpan .

this should? be easy-ish for the rear - as you'd probably just need to drill a new hole through the runner.
and you would re-use the exisitng floor pan rearmost runner hole.

BUT for the front,[:'(][][]
if the runners are moved back so far that they no longer overlap the front floorpan hole - then you'll need to form a fresh mount hoel int eh flor pan - too advanced for me!

Fot a TINY bit of welding, you could probably get a garage to weld a flat section of steel to the underside of the runner, sticking out at the front, far enough so that it woudl overlap your front runner holes?

Finally - don't forget that you'll need to be able to phyiscally get an allen key to the bolts in order to fix the seat back to the floor -[][][] not always easy

Good luck!

Hi, and welcome,

I took one of my seats out yesterday and yes, you can move then back about another inch (possibly slightly more).

I was surprised to find additional holes and threads that the bolts can screw into.

All you need to do is remove 6 allen bolts (2 at front with seat pushed back and 4 at back with seat forward). You will likely need to lift it up a bit to see where the other holes are.

Many thanks for the prompt replies.

The Ruf wheel sounds as though it will be too much, so I will go for the simple option of taking the seat out and finding the other fixing holes.

Thanks for this. I must be a little niaive as I didn't think we'd be talking £500+ which we certainly are - Carnewal havea wide range but withairbag, which I would want, it costs a bomb. In my view too much for the extra inch or so of leg room and te slight aesthetic improvement.

Cheers anyway though.
