993 Suspension replacement

Thought those not aware of the offers that happen to come from OPC's from time to time might like to be made aware of this.

If you are looking to replace, update or change the suspension on your 993 it's worth speaking to your nearest OPC. I was at one earlier this week collecting some 996 Turbo parts and just enquired the cost of original replacement Porsche sports suspension for the beloved 993 C2. Two minutes later was given the price for 10mm lower front springs, 20 mm lower back and 4 uprated shock absorbers for £395+vat. Couldn't get the credit card out quick enough. Not is stock but three day delivery from the Fatherland.
Just thought I'd make everyone aware as it does seem to represent amazing value. The guy from Porsche said its only slightly more expensive than one replacement shock absorber.

Thanks Maurice. They should arrive before the end of the week and I will let you know what the shock absorbers are. I am fairly sure from what was said by the staff at Reading OPC parts department that the springs and shock absorbers were the same as supplied with M030.

Thanks Maurice, my sentiments exactly. Even if they turn out to be Monroes they have to be better than the standard ones that are on there now after 12 years and 42000 miles. At less than £100 a corner I wont mind using a bit more of the house keeping money two to three years down the line. Will let you know how things turn out.

Hi

Haven't got a clue on the prices difference. Until they arrive tomorrow not sure exactly what's in the package. If you take the cost of the springs away from the equation i guess the shock absorbers are virtually for nothing.

Mike

I heard that Porsche was offering deals on the lowered suspension package for the 993, but I understood this to be the M033, not the M030. Doesn't the M030 suspension also have different (thicker) roll bars to the standard car ?

You may want to check, but on the other hand, regardless of whether M033 or M030, for £400 it'll be a big improvement over your current 10yr old regular suspension. Are you going to have them fitted by your OPC ?
If so, I'd be interested to know the all in price. Don't forget to claim your 10% PCGB discount ! [;)]

Thanks for all the info lads. Confirmed this morning that they will be in stock later today. M030 springs and Monroe shock absorbers as fiitted with the M030 factory upgrade but less the roll bars. Car is booked in with Steve Bull to be fitted next Thursday. I think I'll be looking at around £400+vat for the work including lazer alignment etc etc. Will keep you all posted with the results. The shock absorbers have to last a reasonable amount of time and I think at less than £1K all in for replacement genuine Porsche Sports Suspension fitted by a good specialist it's a reasonable deal.

Mike

I can't argue with that. Let us know how you get on with the M030.

By the way, would anyone be interested in a group purchase of RS roll bars?

Parts finally arrived from Porsche and slight error in original description. The pack supplied on checking with Maurice's useful article in the FAQ section revealed it to be the complete M033 package with identical part numbers to those listed by Maurice. To be honest I didn't really want a much firmer ride. Any rate decided to go ahead and have it all installed. Got the car back yesterday and what ever can be justifiably criticised about the original Monroes, the car drives superbly now. Ride height has been reduced by a sensible level and the car just handles so smoothly. Can't help but reiterate previous advice from Maurice and the like over steering geometry checks. Full before and after print out showing camber, castor and toe at the two front wheels and camber and toe at the two rear showed definate need for adjustment on rear toe.(probably accounted for even wear but short rear tyre life, struggled to get much more than 4000 from set of rears). Overall for just over £900 complete I am extremely satisfied with the end results.

I've been following your story with interest... but I too would have concerns over a much firmer ride - is it much firmer than "stock"?

Hi Tom

The springs as I understand it with the M033 give the same ride quality as standard. I am a fairly discerning sort of person and would be brave enough to admit it wasn't up to much if that was the case but I am truly delighted with the ride quality. Whilst I do like to drive the car as intended I didn't want to visit the dentist for filling replacements everytime I took the car out. There are undoubtably higher quality items that can be fitted as already stated on this thread, but if the genuine Porsche parts do the job at a reasonable price I'm up for it.

Bilstein HD's & H&R springs are better quality and will cost approx £1000 fitted. Ride quality is improved with these fitted compared to OEM.

Hmm.... William, I don't mean to sound cheeky, but... HD shocks and H&R spings seem to cost around £750.

I'd be interested to know where I can get these fitted, and the suspension realigned as appropriate, for approx £250??

Tom,

Thespecilaist I used charged me approx £150 to fit ( about an hour a corner) and alignment carried out by Porsche/ Ferrari approved shop for approx £70.

When I bought the set it cost approx £680

Oh!

So, it seems that Mike paid over the odds for the fitting - cos otherwise these are almost 6 and half a dozen?

£70 seems very cheap for a full alignment... want to name names??! :)

Company called CLCM in Edinburgh.

There are a lot of us will testify to the owners brilliance at setting up the cars[:)]

Hi Lads

Here is the final breakdown of the costs.

M033 suspension from Porsche Reading (inc discount) £315.44+vat = £370.64

Fitment by Steve Bull £285.00+vat = £334.88

4 wheel lazer full alignment £140+vat = £164.50

Total £870.02

I certainly do not begrudge any of the labour costs and do not object to a top quality highly reputable Porsche Service specialist charging a labour rate of around £55 an hour. I am a great believer in the saying that pay peanuts and you get monkeys. Oh this also included collecting the car from Bath and taking to Steve Bull's Devizes work shop. Full lazer alignment at Swindon and car returned to Bath.

Despite the quality discussion which throws doubts on the suitability or otherwise of refitting original specification suspension I think it was still a very good overall deal. On the basis that the 'Monroes' only last 25000 to 30000 miles it will mean on my 5000 miles a year I will need to address the situation in 5 or 6 years time assuming they have failed or deteriorated to an extent where replacement is advisable.

Hi,

Thanks for the update - sounds like you are very happy with the result.

Would you say that you have noticed any difference in the firmness of the ride? I know the springs are the same rating as the standard height ones, just wondered if you thought the old ones had "gone off" over time?

Pete

Hi Pete

Can't really say the ride seems any harsher than before. I think an accurate description is that the car now just feels so much more accurate to drive. I had plenty of confidence in the car before hand even when pushing it on a bit but the whole car now just seems more together. Probably down to the new suspension and also the alignment check and adjustment. What I haven't done is turn the car into a track day wonder. It will go on the track a few days this year just for fun but I didn't want to compromise road comfort too much.
