993 turbo advice please

Hi,
I'm going to look at a 993 turbo next week and was wondering if anyone has any tips on things particular to the turbo model that I should look for, but of course I'm going to get a PPI as well. I'm going to use RSJ in Berkshire, has anyone had any dealings with them?

The Blue car in Berks is a converted LHD car that many people ran away from in the past year and when it was 20% cheaper, you need to look back a couple of months for the thread and all the links to the background I posted.

Hi Gordon,
how's the weather!!
The car you mentioned isn't the one I' looking at, (thankfully) mine is a private sale, still a very good price tho.

The spec looks good, ticks alot of my boxes, but does still leave a few not, but it's a turbo!
Does anyone know anything about this one as I saw it on piston heads a while back.

Hi turboww,
I know what you mean, but I'm not going to tell him that!!
I'm definately going to get a good PPI done, the trouble is, there are so many out there, RSJ in slough are closest to the car, but Northways in Reading seem to be highly regarded, I know Peter Morgan is on everyone's list, but he seems a little pricey, at over £100 more than an independent .
Basically at this price I want to make sure this porsche isn't a lemon, so a really good PPI is essential.

Price and car looks good value even if a few things wrong, cars are very reliable unless totally abused, personally I had never heard of RSJ until the Blue car was put about. I would read the old posting and ask about it, if they are not honest about it, you wont be able to trust there inspection.

I've used Northways near Reading for over 10 years they know 993 Turbos inside out and Mr Northway had one as his last personal car of choice until an 86 year old OAP wrote it off by driving in to it!

The following are fairly std and need checking, as to what state they are in, you should also expect to find in the FSH
- at least one Clutch replacement, two would be around normal.- c£1k
- 2 sets of brakes and discs - c£1k
- leaky cam covers£300
- Most people would have refurbished the turbo's by now c£1k
- First gear linkage if it 'bangs a bit' when takes off it has done many a fast start, not life threatening and can be lived with
- Door stays c£800
- Interior should show wear but not worn ouot.
- replaced boost pipes c£400
- check for rust around windscreen, lift rubbers, I would expect a respray in 50%+ of cars in this area
- I would have expected the front PU and bonnet to have been resprayed at least once.
- Also do a leakdown tests.

When you put ypour foot down in the car there should be no tyre slippage in dry and the car should just fly with no hesitation/hiccups and c30mph/gear.

weather here mid to late 20's during day and low 20's in evening, therefore perfect feels like spring when your acclimatised.

unfortunately coming back to Blighty in next two weeks and I will freeze to death

Good luck

Gordon

and PS you will find it to quite and will want RSR's or louder!!

hi Gordon,
the good news is that it has RSR's already! and psr9's, a new clutch and powerhaus lightened flywheel and a nose cone oil cooler. are all these common replacements using non porsche products or just labled add ons?
I'll be able to go through the history when I view the car this week, I meant to see it last week, but he couldn't do the viewing. So next week it'll be, hopefully.
Thanks for all your info, it's funny how we set a ceiling for what we want to spend and end up completely blowing it when an 's' of a tt come along!

Paul

Everything about the car sounds right.

Oops check the aircon and condensor plus the MAF can play up get the Bosch hammer on the car as well.

The price the new clutch and discs are all very good signs, the PS9's, RSR's the extra oil cooler are gold plating and worth £4k it means that the owner has looked after the car and also knows about 993TT. The extra oil cooler usually means an ECu upgrade and 450bhp. The lioghtweight clutch is a new one on me and a question for RennlistThe car would only be a Lemon if the engine is on its way out and thats where Northways will tell you on test drive.

There is another independant in west london who knows 993TT cant remember b,,,name..Peter Tognola

I'm wondering which boxes you havent ticked.

PS if you have only driven a 911 before be warned the first drive in anger in the Turbo in the dry will be scary fast, dont boot it in the damp unless in a straight line and then it will wheel spin squirm and take off

you're not going to believe it, but one box is I would like a marble interior, and the other one isn't available on the turbo, a smooth back (no spoiler) but it's growing on me!
Checking the a/c and condensor will be covered in a PPI I presume? along with the MAF?
but what on earth is a bosch hammer? that's definately a new one on me.

A Bosch hammer is a Porsche tool that they plug into the car and it tests for faults.

THe rear end of a 993TT is something to behold, J Lo, Beyonce come to mind

Just to add to Gordon's answer, the Bosch "hammer" is the colloquial name for the Bosch KTS300 System Tester used by and customised for Porsche for the 928, 964, 944 and 968. It is called the "hammer" purely because of it's shape - as you can see from the attached pic.

It has long since been superseded in OPC circles by the later PST2 and PIWIS systems although the "hammer" is still the weapon of choice for some selected functions on the 964 C4 particularly.

The link saying no longer available is on it, and I'm in mid negotiations as we speak. There's a bit of a delay at the mo, but don't worry I'll keep you informed.
thanks for the hammer info btw, now I know, it seems logical really.

Hi
just did a hpi on the turbo, it's a cat d worth just over 20K.
think I'll leave this one eh?
what do you all think?

Dear me. Don't people who aren't up front about this kind of thing drive you mad. As if any prospective buyer would just go ahead and drop 30 grand on a car and not HPI it [&:]

If it was me, I would walk away faster than the seller can say "Eh?".. if he is trying to hide something as significant as a Cat D loss, WHAT else is lurking under the sheet-metal... ??!!

Thats exactly what I think, just say up front and people won't get their hopes up and someone may actually buy the car! shall I offer 20K pending an inspection!!!
oh, btw, I've sold m car now, does anyone know of a good 2s or 2 for sale, think I'm sure of the 2wd route now.
thanks guys

Unbelievable!!!! has the seller never mentioned it.

You should ring him and tell him as it may be still be worth pursueing at a lower costs as they can be written off for some fairly minor damage, which was the case with Mr Northways i.e. only £10 k of damage and the salvage is worth £20k (engines fetch 10-15k alone) they would write it off. If it was my car and I knew it well I would probably buy it back etc etc, so you might as well get the story!!!!!!!

My advice - take steps - big ones and in the opposite direction of this car![X(]

Couple of 2S on Pistonheads - one at Paul Stevens the other private.
