996 C4S or 997 C2

Good Evening members

I'm currently looking to buy a 911 , its been a long time since I owned a 911 , 20 years to be exact, my last 911 was a 1983 SC and I've regretted selling it ever since.

After doing the whole family thing and going without for years , it's my time again and I'm looking for another 911 , I'm old school when it comes to cars , by that I mean I love well built quality vehicles with a heavy to close door, and all the other non "eco friendly" traits that are involved when owning an older car.
So with that I can't make my mind up whether to buy a 996 C4S , or an early 997 C2 , all the obvious things aside ,is their much difference in quality? Are the panals lighter , interior fitments reduced in quality or are they just as well built and engineered as a 996 with no compromise in quality? you'll probably read this and think what the hell is this guy on , it's a 911 of course its built the same and of equal quality ,but in my experience in the trade i've seen a massive dip in quality over the last 15 years due to euro emissions standards and eco friendly bio degradable materials used.

I'd love to hear your thoughts and opinions.

I've had a 996 C4S and a 997.1 C2S and I currently have a 997.2 Turbo.

IMO the 997 is better built. But neither will feel or sound like your SC in the door opening and shutting department. Both feel modern in comparison.

I still LOVE the 996 C4S and I think it is a modern classic. I'd buy one of those BUT I think the 997 is better built and is nicer inside.

Thank you for that , I'm thinking that the 996 C4S at this time will be a win win situation as I don't think they'll lose any money now .

I prefer the 997 looks and interior so it's a hard decision.

[;)] If performance and driving pleasure come into the equation, 997 - no question! [;)]

Sorry guys I forgot to ask , is there anything to look out for when buying a 997 , like that of the IMS bearing on the 996?

I had the same dilemma as you. I wanted a manual cab, very much liked the relative rarity of a 996 C4S but decided in the end to go 997 C2S. Absolutely love it and don't regret my decision ??

Owned 996's Gen 1 and 2 but not the 4S and then an early 997 C2s. Quality better on the 997 without doubt but as said above the 4S looks great in wide body. I prefer a C2S than a C4 for driving enjoyment but personal preference there. Good luck. A C4S cabriolet is for sale at a garage in Cannock - WS11.

Yes I've been looking at them , it's such a difficult choice and I wasn't going to look to buy until February but I can't wait , it's on my mind the last thing at night and the first thing in the morning , hope my Mrs doesn't see this post she won't like the thought of being second best :ROFLMAO:

???? oh yes I think everyone on here has been through that feeling.

remember saying to my wife the 996 C4s is it, then same with the 997 GTS, then again recently with the 991 GTS.... She just has this look of disappoint and inevitability whenever I start talking about cars.

regardless of whether you get the 997 ot the 996 C4S as long as you get a good one you will love it, it a Porsche.

ps tell her prices are lower in the autumn / winter ??

?? I'm glad it's not just me then , thanks for the advice i'l let you know what happens and what I end up with , it's funny because I'm not often nervous when buying a car , I'm in the motor trade and work as a Technical Specialist for Mercedes Benz but this time buying another 911 is a little daunting , I know Mercs inside out , but not so much Porsche .

Thanks , I sold the sc 20 years ago and apart from marrying my EX wife it's the biggest mistake of my life ??

I always buy from either a OPC or a good specialist with a warranty and you can't go too far wrong. By the way if you go for a C4S get one with a sports exhaust, it is absolutely a great sound. I always found the 997 a but too quite to be honest.
