996 Horn

My horn makes a bit of a pathetic "parp". Is this all the horn the 996 has? (I'm waiting for the smutty inuendoes). Is it worth me having a crawl around under the front end to find another tone for a two tone, or should I pop down to Halfords for a full on set of air horns(do they still make such things?)

Yes Adrian, but returning to the subject of your 996...

It is a bit weedy isn't it? You appear in someone's mirror looking like something out of Hades, and then they wonder why that pushbike to their left is annoyed. I've only used it once - Litronics get the message accross rather better.

Anyone up for finding an airhorn that will fit?

By an Italian car !!! Every one of mine, from 348 Ferrari down to an Alfasud, have had horns a man can feel proud of ! On other cars I generally fit airhorns. Not only that, but because we do so much high speed driving and overtaking on French country roads or Italian mountain passes, I have ALWAYS had an extra horn button fitted in the passenger footwell for " 'er Indoors" to use when I tell her to, since on some maneuovres, the last thing I want to do is spoil my concentration by remembering where the horn button is on whatever car out of my collection I happen to be driving at the time ! I used to have a hand buton fitted for her, but now find she is hanging on to the hand grips or seat, so a foot button is much better !!! Cheers, Steve

I have visions of you taking passengers on trackdays, and the horn going off all around the circuit every time they subconciously "brake"[:D]

...or does this happen on the road as well?[&:]

Of course my horn is generally going off permanently, that's what I fitted the bloody thing for ! The only horns that don't work are the ones that are fitted to the horn buttons in the BACK seats of my cars. These are the ones I use to reassure the totty I invite there, having first reassured them that they can give it a thump if things get out of hand ! ..........of course, these buttons are NEVER wired up !!!
Cheers,
Steve.

Automatic watches ? Do you mean those that are wound up with a little knurled knob at the side ? I haven't had a knurled knob since I don't know when !. My present watches are either atomic powered (Breitling "Hiroshima"), wind powered ( Tissot "TrouserCough") or water powered ( Rolex "Pissoir"). O.K., I am presently speaking to Montecristo about a watch that is only ever wound up by rubbing up and down on the inside of a virgin's thigh, but am just a tad worried about my ability to find enough totty capable of qualifying to be able to keep it wound up !
( Ah, time was !!!!!).
Ciao,
Steve.

"----oir" ?! My God ! It's a sad ------- world when you can't even have a ----- without some sad ---- editing your vocabulary into extinction !!!!

I guess you bunch of decadent reprobates know what I was referring to !
Ciao,
Steve.

When you speak to Montecristo, please make sure that they delete the knurls off the knob. When I last tried to wind my watch on the inside of a virgin's thigh, I found that all the knurls on my knob kept getting caught in her knickers.
SGLB.

You will probably find that one or both of the horns is/are on their way out. Mine is an early 996 (I see yours is a 3.4 too) and recently failed the MOT for the horns, both of which were replaced, and it's a bumper off job so more expensive than you might think. If you have the time, you might want to have a look at it yourself: I believe bumper removal is not too difficult, just a little time consuming.

Here is how to get the bumper off.
It is for the Boxster - but identical for early model 996's.

Thanks for the education but, nah, life's too short, I'll put up with a "parp" and get it done at next service

I have the endemic pathetic horn, but notice I have one horn device in the area next to the battery. Is this a later, 'get-it-through-the-MOT' trick? I suspect this is the only horn working, but is a jolly good spot for it, compared to the one(s) behind the bumper. What were they thinking of?

Both horns should be down by the air-con condenser (RH of car)
The low pitch one might be removable without getting the whole front off.
The high needs the bumper-cover removed though (see link in post above)

Might the "extra" horn be some add-on for an aftermarket alarm system?
Probably not, but it might be (before you go to remove it and deafen yourself[])

Just had a look, and it does appear to be part of the fabric of the car (if you see what I mean). Is it specifically for the alarm system, I wonder? It is connected to the wiring loom in a very factory-esque manner, with black cloth tape and everything. Looks like the front of the car will have to come off!

Andrew, trust me - the horn next to the battery is the ALARM horn. Leave one of the doors ajar and try to lock the car. It should emit a single beep from this horn.

I wonder if it would be possible to hook up one of those american truck horns.

They sound awesome and definatly get the message across...

The round metal horn next to the battery is for the alarm. The two electric horns for the steering wheel are behind the bumper cover next to one of the radiators. The way the horns are mounted are such that the hi pitch horn points down and water can get into it. We have had to replace a few of the hi pitch horns. The low pitch is better covered by the bumper cover so there is less chance for water to get in it.

Last year my 2.5 Boxster was backed into by a truck while I was blasting the horns. The driver could not hear me. The body shop replace my front bumper cover. Before the new cover was put on I found the loudest air horns I could find and mounted them behind the cover. I taped into the existing horn wire. I was going to install a switch so I could have the electric or air or both horns, but I was hit in a split second and would not have time to play around with a switch. So I did not install a switch and all my horns go on at the same time.

So now I have the original electric and air horns. On the base Boxster and 996 non tip there is plenty of room for the compressor and horns as there is no middle radiator, Jeff
