996 Insurance

ORIGINAL: garyandjanet

this should make you feel better

Full no claims 35 lady driver 3 points - £1400 - cheapest.

However we do live in Bradford [:(]

I also live in lovely Bradford, whichever car I get next (m3/M5/996) is going to cost around £2000 to insure, despite only 3 points and 7 years NCB.......extortionate, but a small price to pay to live in this lovely city!

Hi Guys,

First of all I would like to thank everyone that responded to my post, either here or directly via e-mailed - many thanks.

I have now decided to fit an RAC Trackstar unit after being told that is can be moved from vehicle to vehicle - which need to be performed by an approved fitter and will be subject to an installation fee.

You will notice that I have updated the list of quotes in my original post to include most of what I received - I hope these are useful to people.

Cheers again

Steve

Hi Steve - very useful, thanks.

If it makes you feel better, I'm 35 and Performance Marque have just written to me to ask for £1800+ next year.

Ho hum ... I suppose I'd better ring them all ... what fun!

Hello Pete B,
Well done for getting such a bloody low quote from Adrian Flux, but just how did you manage to get ! Do have have a full NCB ? I cannot understand how I am charged £717 and yet you paid less than £500.00 ?

Here is a thumb nail sketch of me and my circumstances to give you a comparison guide. I am in my '50's and retired ( effectively ! ) and live in Hertfordshire. I have a clean licence and an accident free record but lost my 70% NCB when I switched to a "Cherished Car" policy a couple of years ago. I do put " 'er Indoors" on my cover, but she is old enough to not be penalised for lack of experience and also has had no accidents, although does have one SP 30 nick on her licence ( 48 in a 40 MPH zone). I garage my car and also insure a lot of other exotica with Flux, although I may not do so next year !!!!
Cheers,
Marlin.

There is a point worth mentioning that I was unaware off. When I was 35 I was kicked out of the Fire Service after an injury and when my insurance company found out I had "effectively retired" they slapped a huge increase on my premium. When I questioned it they said that now I had more time on my hands I would be on the road more! Even though I pointed out that I would no longer be traveling 160 miles a day round trip from East Sussex to Tottenham for 4 days out of 7.

Just thought I would point out for the wrinklies that being retired makes you more of a risk---- (apparently)

Good luck - It will be interesting to know what quotations you get. If you do try any other companies that I didn't please let me know the results so I can update the list to be as comprehensive as possible.

Cheers

Also keep in mind your occupation and location plays a major part; I work in the video games industry and if I put my occupation as technical director, entertainment industry then my quote shoots up by at least £500 but after I have started stating my occupation as software engineering manager (which is what I am) I have been getting much favourable quote.

On top of the obvious things like tracker, no claim bonus, over 25, etc here are a couple of other things, not so obvious, to keep in mind:
1. Garage and driveway are preferred. Even street parking seems to get better quotes than a private car park; public car park is the worst.
2. Having a second driver as female (spouse or co-habitate) who has her own car for regular use also really helps (doesn't seem to be favoured by sports car specialist like A. Manning, etc though)
3. Annual mileage really helps (I think below 7K is the most favoured) as lower the mileage, the less you will be on the road, minimising the risk of accidents.
4. As mentioned above, any occupation related to entertainment, sports, broadcasting, motoring sports industry is considered as a high risk group (you have the young footballers crashing sports cars to blame for this statistical risk)

Insurance has always been a hot, money making, business... and for that reason and for our benefit I am trying to create a database at:
http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=119174&mpage=1&key=insurance&#119174
All pointers are correct, I would add the follwowing two:
1. Always shop around and bargain one against the other over a week's long time and then
2. Try to purchase the cover at the close of business, on Friday afternoon.

Well, I had time to try two brokers at lunchtime today.

A Manning can quote £1300, with no mileage limit, a rather small excess, European use, recovery service, and all PCGB trackdays thrown in. I wonder if the European use covers the Nurburgring? I'd ask (just out of interest [8|]) but Ben Lovejoy warns that this is a dangerous question! Note that there is also a "Manning" insurance broker who is not the same one, so take care when Googling [:(]. They seem to be a bit bored with Porsche and TVR owners asking for quotes.

Adrian Flux offer £1050 but can't protect the NCB at that price and don't cover trackdays - although one-off daily cover can be arranged for extra £££s.

Performance Marque have come down to £1850 all in but want £93 per track day and will only do it if you are within a long list of underwriting conditions*, although they are trying to get it included free again. I think we must all have been whinging about that one. They were a bit surprised at £1300 so a manager is going to call me back. We'll see if s/he does .... !

A Manning seem to be ahead so far....[:)]

Michael

---------------------

*Can't remember them all but I think they included:
- must have been to a track day before
- excess is 10% of the car's value [ouch!]
- max payout is £100k
- no cover for mechanical problems not caused by an accident
- track must be MSA approved
- just you & spouse driving

In case you are interested for comparison the TT bumps the premium up quite a bit, not least due to the value of the thing.
I need unlimited mileage, business class 1 use, protected NCB and it's parked on the street, and I have full NCB and (so far) no points.
Insurance is 1800 notes, through a broker, but cover is with Zurich Private Clients.
No trackday cover though, and the Nurburgring is excluded although it doesn't explictly say it anywhere, but I asked out of curiosity and they seem to think the answer is no. Not sure what clause might cover that interpretation.

Direct Line, cheapest by a long shot £ 1000 full comp, protected NCB (9 years), garaged, limited to 8000 miles a year (which I will never do because it is a second car, or should that say "toy") I'm 31 and a company director. They didn't require that the car needed a tracking device (even though it has one anyway)

Just got my renewal through Privilege.
Last year 1475, this year 1275 with no claims protected, 3k miles pa limit
Car is a 993 TTS, garaged, tracker, 7 years no claims, 33 yrs living in Kent/London borders

I'm insured with Prestige at a little under £800.
Even though they insist I have a Tracker fittedfFrom what I've been able to find out none of central Scotland police traffic departments actually have hardware to track the damn thing if the car does get nicked!

Waste of money or what?

That's a very good price. Can I ask what age the car is?

It should be noted that even though most insurance companies ask for a Tracker to be fitted they normally mean any Thatcham Q approved tracking device such as RAC Trackstar+, iMob etc... and those others are normally GPS based so don't require the police to have the special Tracker hardware fitted to their vehicles. I guess they got into the habit of calling them Trackers a bit like we call vacum cleaners Hover's [;)]

I had my Trackstar fitted yesterday so that will keep my insurance company happy now. I can recommend it has it has optional features such as Safe Speed, Emergency Call feature, Breakdown Call function and European Cover (useful for those PCGB trips abroad) and can also be moved to another car when changing vehicles. But then again I'm slightly biased as I worked for Trafficmaster a few years ago!

Kind Regards

Steve

I used to live in Mudchute on the Isle of Dogs which for all you non East Enders is about as scruffy an area as you'd ever want to park your motor. A few weeks ago I moved to leafy Clarkenwell, from on street to secure underground with residents only access plus CCTV - I called Norwich Union to "quote me happy" and the villains jacked my quote up from £900 to £1500! Time to get on the 'net methinks....Oh, AND I have to give Ken £240 a year for the privelege of driving my car to my house as it's in the congestion charge zone.
