996 MOT

Mine is due in a week or so and I don't particularly want to put it into a local garage, nor Glenvargill. Anyone got any recommendations? People seem to speak favourably of George Morrison; does he do MOTs? Anyone else?

this is the place to go [:D]

Can't get the rear nearside foglight to work (no power from the grey lead it would seem) so it's going into Town & County in Aberdeen while I'm up there. Oh yes, and I've now got a leak in my left hand door to match the one in the Boxster's right hand one. Crap build quality.

Well, not that anyone is interested but £923 to get through it's MOT (new front brake discs -- I was going to these myself like I did the rears, that'll teach me. £500, which makes it about £250 worth of stupidity and procrastination tax, I guess; new horns -- apparently not an uncommon problem with older cars requiring the front PU to come off (by the way, what does PU stand for?); leaking LH door -- not required for the MOT but I needed to get this fixed, a new membrane costs £30 and it's about an hour's labour. Apparently a common fault if any work has been done on the door previously and the old one reused to save money).
Now, all I need is a new seat back for the RH electric sports seat (£375 + labour quoted from the OPC, I think I'll wait and get a second hand one and try doing it myself...) then everything will be sorted, almost :)
PS The Boxster passed its MOT a week later first time and two days after that so did my 20 year old LHD 944 with 135000 miles on it (although they fitted a 69p bulb for me without asking). There's a message there, I think (apart from don't have the stress of three car MOTs in ten days -- as well as two lots of insurance and three lots of car tax in the same month. However, I look at all this as a glass half full :)

I thought the Near-Side foglight was not supposed to work?

It is the same on the Boxster. Only the Right Hand one is actually powered.

Don't understand.... did you fit your discs or not?? If so is it straightforward???

PU, by the way is Polyurethane, I think (plastic)

Yes, only one of the rear fog lights works on both cars -- found that out when I took the car in (one of the engineers was standing at the reception desk).
Changed the rear discs myself three or four months ago: piece of p*ss. Didn't get around to doing the front ones as they were much more expensive than the rears. Well, they are a lot more expensive if you put it into the OPC... There was an article in a recent 911 & Porsche World on how to do the discs: if you want a photcopy, let me know.

You'll need a torx thingy to get the caliper off and mind you don't knacker the three screws holding the disc onto the hub otherwise you'll really have a problem on your hands.

Nothing particularly, except they are £90 an hour for labour and Town and County in Aberdeen are £60 if anything goes wrong (as it did). And as I am regulary in Aberdeen...
Having said that, when the tilt function in my RH seat stopped working I put it into Glenvargill Glasgow and they said it was the cables. After the new cables were fitted they then found out that a portion of plastic had broken off the inner of the rear of the seat. I was slightly disgruntled that they had misdiagnosed the problem and, perhaps, fitted a new part that was not required, not to mention the labour costs.
Personally, I find it very hard to complain in these situations, so I probably just won't go back. I haven't read many, if any, other bitches about GVG so maybe this was just a one off.

Have to say that I am a big fan of Glenvarigill....or was until I kerbed an alloy reversing out of their garage yesteday.

Damn!!!

Saw Nick Nairn's new C4S Cab being prepped - which looks fab in Polar Silver.

Bad luck with the wheel: I did my nearside rear ages ago and was thinking of getting Chips Away to have a look at it after reading the recent article in this months 911PW. Anyone used them in the Glasgow area (am reluctant to use them without a rec.)

Paul we have used Chipsaway (based in London) for past 3 years now. My guy is excellent and he can fix badly curbed alloys as good as new in no time at all .... He is a wizzard at bumper repairs and small paint damage. Good luck with your local man

Dave Ross who has the North Glasgow franchise is fantastic for bodywork. Has dome my 996, my wife's Espace and my mother's Civic. He has a 944.
I have 18" Sport Designs. Someone said that they can't be repaired. Is this true?
