996 turbo vs 993 turbo.

they are both astonishing cars , simply fantastic in their own ways , the question i ask is which would you rather have in say 5 / 10 years time.

the 993 is and shall remain a classic. the end of evolution .
the 996.... will it just be seen as a start of something that evolves over time ( 997 ) and therefore somehow inferior ! ? , something improving .

I love my 993tt, its small and compact, it looks fantastic, sounds fantastic and goes as fast as I ever want to go in a road car. It was a sensible purchase (IMHO) as opposed to buying a 996tt, also a very good car. I don`t like looks of the 996 as much as the 993 and it is quite a bit bigger. The everyday driver friendly argument didn`t apply because I use it when I feel like it and don`t need to use it to get from A to B. If I had to have only one car, then the 996 would make more sense and it would be equally as much fun under those circumstances.

In the longer term, i`m fairly confident it will hold a good proportion of present 993tt values, they were £100k when new 9 yrs ago! On the other hand I suspect 996tt`s will be going for early Boxster money, at which point I may buy one as a daily driver to keep the miles down on the iconic 993tt!

I can`t imagine drooling over the 996tt as I do every time I look in the garage at my 993tt, they just don`t do it for me.
 
993TT are not holding their value, as everyone seems to think.

I had trouble selling my 993TT on a '95 plate. Prices ranged from £30-35K. Talk of £40K plus cars is typically '98 cars with low mileages.

And if ANYTHING goes pop on a 993 it will cost a fortune to replace. I have a porsche warranty on the 996 for the next 5 years - one of the reasons I sold the 993 was for fear of something going pop and being left with a huge bill.

Agree a 97-98 993TT can be purchased for a 2001 996TT. Cars depreciate - if I wanted to make money I would invest in ISA's![;)]

I would have picked it up the next day if it was as described, you just didnt take me seriously. At least the next seller did. So I think your £30 to 35k offers are not 100% accurate ( and my offer was cash not a trade in).

A 993 TT is not expensive to sort out if things go wrong you just have to shop around.


 
Is this gona turn into one of those team Angelena jolie and team jenifer aniston things. If so then im TEAM 993.[:)]
 
The 993tt is absolutely useable every day. The only reason not to is a desire to keep mileage down to preserve value. It is just as if not more user friendly than 993 c2 as it has lighter clutch. Things are now needing replacement on my '95 34000 miler such as shocks, clutch power steering pump etc but I am pleased that these caosts are more than covered by the lack of depreciation.
The thing I notice most with 996 that is an attraction is the new toys PSM, sat nav, non-squeeky wipers etc which is great - also they are much easier to modify than 993 if you want more poke - its amazing how 400 bhp doesnt feel so fast as it used to!

Is ease of use = "better" why aren't we all driving Honda Accords?

Hang on a minute, dont make things personal. Did take you seriously, dont know where that comment came from.

And 993TT's are expensive to maintain when compared to other porsche models.
 
Ok probabley an out of order comment on mybehalf (sorry), but I was very serious about your car. I just didnt want to waste my time seeing it first if I could not get it for the money I could afford.

Things are bound to be more expensive than a normal 993. OPC Nottingham wanted £3300 (approx) for a new clutch. My man got his bits from OPC Nottingham and charged me £900. I imagine once my car is fully preped I will only spend the amount it costs for a Porsche warranty each year. Try looking at what other similar cars cost to maitain (ferrari etc..). If the Turbos go, then I may be in the ...............
 
David, you may be being a little optimistic on running costs, alot depends on how you drive the car. My view is what's the point in paying for all this performance and not using it. These cars will go through tyres and brakes if used on the track. I'm in the process of having an engine rebuild, the cost of that would make your eyes water, that's after new turbo's, clutch, shocks etc

I had a Ferrari for 18 months, the only cost was a set of shock absorbers at £2k, great car never let me down. The difference was I hardly drove it because I did not want to put too many miles on and it's not the sort of car to leave in a public car park.

Back on topic, 996 best for every day and 993 for the weekend and a Ferrari to make you appreciate how good the Porsches are.
 
356 owners ran down the 911, pre-impact bumper owners ran down impact bumper models, rear engined owners ran down the front engined models - so what's new? Air-cooled 911 owners run down the water cooled 911s.

The guy that started it all (Butzi) hated the spoiler on the 2.7 RS - it spoiled his original flowing lines concept so he said. At the time they were all the best - Porsche's philosophy is evolution raher than revolution, generally speaking each new model does things better than the previous model, the rest is down to personal taste.

It's just as well we don't all like the same model or the others would be on the scrap heap - what a great shame that would be; from 930 to 997 turbo they are all just wonderful.

A quickie if I may, did Porsche ever make a 993 Turbo Tiptronic or was Tiptronic only available with the 996?

ALL Porsche's are rubbish everybody knows the best sports car is a subaru impreza wrx, i mean look at the tails stuck on them.[8D] (you guys are easy to wind up) yeah i know who's he anyway? he only drive's a front engined porsche[:D][:D].
