I`m buying/building up a parts bin and currently prepping and shaking down a stripped down Mk 1 Golf (to be fitted with a 200bhp plus ish Audi 1.8T lump later this year) :p

The world is small ... Friend of a friend fitted such an engine into his much modified Mk2 Golf, it currently puts out about 280 bhp and terrorises many on the track. Looking forward to following your progress if ever you plan to share it.
Me too. Many on here will know of my love for Mk1 GTi's, and the 1.8t lump in one makes for a remarkably brisk rocketship. Weight is firmly on your side ...

Well there's Rick, MarkK and myself on the forum with circa 400bhp and 1400kg, compared with 420bhp and 1550kg for the 996TT. I'll bet the major difference would be sophistication and refinement from the 996 corner compared to our tweaked 1980's models with bigger turbo's. Traction will always be our big enemy with only 2 wheel drive and narrower tyres to put down the power. Bagsy I don't have to do a standing start against a 996TT, because I think I'd just be looking at tailpipes as it roared away from me.

We'll have to wait for Bruntingthorpe to be cleared of unsold cars for the next VMAX event to try and do a direct comparison, or maybe this years Tipec Gaydon event where we get to use the 4 mile testing circuit again [:)]

Either way I would love to have a 996T (as long as it has a tow bar and trailer to carry my luggage and track tyres around [;)])
 
It has occurred to me it would be relatively easy to mod the 996, the 944 was relatively boring with 240ish BHP but over 350 it got a lot more interesting so a 996 with 5-600BHP might be fun *

Me too but you`d need a similar brake set up to them to take advantage of those 200kg`s less as the 911`s are able to launch themselves out of corners earlier.

You are right, they are phenominally quick, I mean REALLY quick (280 bhp equates to approx 310 ish bhp/ton so about equivalent to a 430bhp 944) with good torque as the MK1`s (and MkII`s) are very light and 0-60 under 5 secs is easi;y possible and if you reduce unsprung weight also the turn in is staggering however its hard to get a good brake/tyre balance.

I`ve subsequently learned that the Mk II`s are a much better bet as they are heavier front wise however I intend to treat the MK1 more as a lightweight car and ditch the servo etc to see what happens. Good Mk 1`s are getting rarer but Mk II`s are as cheap as chips and there is loads of tuning stuff and advice available for MK1`s and 2`s. Cheap spares and panels too so once I`ve prepped and had some fun in the Mk1 as rust free Mk1`s with original panels are rare and gettin more valuable, I`ll sell it (possibly) and build a track only Mk II but I`ll still be saving the 951 for high days and holidays so hope to see friendly faces at Porsche meets in whatever I`m driving

Would be interesting to see if you could shoe-horn a 996TT engine into a 944T engine bay. The chap is also selling the gearbox as well so you could mount that in place of the stock gearbox. Wouldn't be a cheap or straightforward install though. I've seen a photo of the engine bay of a 944 with an aircooled 911 engine installed. Would certainly make for a very interesting drive with all that power and torque going through the rear wheels.

... and that would make a frighteningly capable car if done well ...

How similar are the 996TT and Cayman/Boxster engines? Would one bolt in, in place of the other, or is there more to it than that?

Yes well spotted, would have to use the cayman box (realistically) and adapt engine to box. Cars like the Ultima or GT40 replicas use 911 gearboxes flipped over but this would put the crank so low in the car its only really going to work on a race car (or race car replica), actually thinking about it those 2 cars use V8's so a low crank is fine and the exhausts are fine, a flat 6 engine would have the exhausts scrapping on the ground [:D]
 
Oli, on the basis that they are both flat sixes it will physically fit. The addition of turbos and intercooling and pipework would be a bit of work but not impossible I think. The crown-wheel / diff needs to change sides to compensate for the normal 996tt engine behind 'box to the cayman engine ahead of 'box layout. Its all been done before.
It would make a modern day 962 roadcar.
Its just a matter of time. (&£)

Thanks .... that explains the issues mentioned above about the car going the wrong way!

I have to say, I had never appreciated that the engine was behind the gearbox on 911's. I guess that if I had thought about it then it would have made sense to me. So, the difference between the Cayman/Boxster and the 911 ... is there another idler wheel in the gearbox or do the engines rotate in opposite directions?

I thought about that and came to the conclusion, how do we know the 911 flat 6 engine rotates in the same direction as the 944 engine? For all we know it rotates in the opposite direction and therefore would be fine.

As far as this type of car is concerned they are not overly expensive to run, but it is worth bearing in mind it is a 100K car. So not exactly cheap to run and maintain properly.

Selling the house and giving away the kids may be in order, but I believe worth the sacrifice [:D]

The n/a 996, Boxter, and I think Cayman engines are different to the GT3 and Turbos too.

Picture showing Boxter tranny transplant in a 944 with a V8 up front. Another advantage to doing one of these gearbox swaps is to be able to use much more substantial axles/cvs.
I have a factory rebuilt 996GT2 tranny in a crate waiting to go into a different project, but alas and alack, that may never happen with the economy. These Golf projects look more enticing by the day. [:)]

Interesting, what about oil, does it `bathe` the gears sufficiently upside down?
 
Paul, being in australia of course, its all upside down - so the oil will be in the top of the box.......that wont count......!

That's one of the other mods that has to be done to the tranny to run it in this configuration. There is a company in the US that specialises in this and other gearbox mods. California Motorsports. Very good to deal with. Ask for Roger.
