997.2 Turbo S news

Am I going crazy or when the Turbo came out wasn't 0-100 kph (62mph) quoted at 3.4s? Seems the UK site has change this to 3.5s now (with PDK and Sports+)! Perhaps to differentiate the Turbo S more?! Maybe it was just the Press cars that were suped-up with Turbo S ECU remaps?!

Just looked at the Porsche website they are still quoting 3.4secs with PDK and sports+ I seem to recall a thread on here showing the the gen2 turbos hitting 62 in 3.1secs and that was a cab!

Ok so we reach the limit of my knowledge of physics! How do they increase the power by 16% and the torque by only 3%? I also wish someone would decide on which units to use! Anyone have a simple explanation of the relationship between torque and bhp? All I know is that torque is the turning force and power is the rate at which work can be done.....[&:]

I thought of it in very simple motoring terms as acceleration as torque and top speed as BHP-- and I do mean in simple terms- so Tom.. NO [;)]

From first principles...

1. A Newton is the force which when applied to a mass of 1kg produces an acceleration of 1 metre per second per second - Newton's Second Law of Motion

2. If a force of 1N moves its point of application by 1m, the work done is 1 Joule. Do that in 1 second and the power is 1 Watt.

3. If we have a twisting instead of a linear force, the work is the torque (Nm) * distance moved in 1 second around a 1 metre diameter circle which is Revs/Second * 2 * PI metres.

So, for a 911 turbo engine, 6000 rpm, 100 revs per second, torque of around 585 Nm at that engine speed, the power is 2 * PI * 100 * 585 Nm = 368 kW

Conversion from kW to bhp is simply a conversion from these nice unified SI units to old money: a BHP is (uselessly and arbitrarily) defined as 33000 lbf-ft/min or 550 lbf-ft/second; convert the lbf to N by multiplying by 4.448 (= 9.81 newtons/kg /2.205 lb weight/kg) and the feet to metres by dividing by 3.28 (= 39.37 inches in 1 metre/12 inches in a foot)

368kW = 368000 / (550 * 4.448/3.28) = 493 bhp.

The turbo S may be 0.3 seconds faster than the stock turbo but the gap is virtually closed by the combination of Sport Chrono and PDK which are standard on the 911 turbo which many will already be specifying. Otherwise, the turbo S is largely a raid on the options list. None the worse for that, but I'm happy to have got mine before the price rise and before the VAT increase. I'm not about to swap!

Still, with the tanking Greek, Spanish and Portuguese economies, maybe the "mighty" GBP will rally against the Euro and we'll be able to buy the next turbo for a song. I said "maybe".
 
All I can say is I was about to order a Turbo (April build), 1 day later the Turbo S came out (July Build Slot), and then (maybe I am behind the times) but I see the new 911 is not far off, so I decided to buy a Gen 1 car, wait a couple of years get my order in for a Turbo Gen 3 car and save myself tons of depreciation.

Howver must say they all look lovely
