997 carrera exhaust note

I'm really surprised how quiet my 997 carrera is, my 987 boxster was noisy in comparison! Any, dare I say it ,'cheap' fixes?

is that because the boxster has a fabric roof, or open at the push of a button, so it appears louder?

Tubi do a good exhaust system if you don't want to pay for PSE.

Ronnie, nah I could hear the boxster from inside my house coming down the road when my wife would drive it to work. My wife has said on occasion that she didn't hear me pull in the drive in the 997!

I didn't know PSE could be fitted to the std Carrera, I only thought it was available for the S? My car has a lovely low tone when the revs are above 4k rpm, but at low rpm she is very quiet! The power of course is a different story[;)]

ah yes daro911, but my 'pet human' can enjoy the experience and she is only 2 weeks old! Thanks to Ronnie C, I have a rear facing car seat that fits in the back nicely! Just have to avoid neck snapping accel.

I actually think that the latest Porsche sports exhausts are very PC. The factory switcherable sports exhaust on my Cayman S is not a patch on my son's factory non-switcherable sports exhaust fitted to his 996 C4S. Part of the problem I believe is that the ECU now controls the noise level and PAG in their wisdom have gone enviromentally friendly. For example, I am told that it has a 'drive-by mode' which mutes the exhaust bewteen 20 - 40 mph. Great for non car-lovers but not so great for us enthusiasts. My next Cayman wil have a Tubi.

Well the easy answer to that is to disconnect the PSE and leave it loud all the time, then you don't get that irritating mute between 20 and 40 mph. On the 997 it's less than 60 seconds, but of course you poor Cayman drivers can't even see your engine...![;)][;)]

Yup PSE is available on both Carrera and Carrera S. Not sure how it will sound but with the 3.6 engine but with a 3.8 and the always on mod the last thing you can say about it is that is it too quiet - I imagine they sound very simliar. Its seriously noisy - makes people look round when they hear you coming down the road! [:D]

Try Nottingham OPC cost £1290 (this may cost slightly more if you don't have sport chrono as you will need a switch) a few months ago, did an excellent job in just over half a day plus provided taxi into and back from Notts city centre.
It might not make the 997 faster but sure as hell sounds like it does.

Jason, I'd be interested if you find a good price for PSE at one of the OPCs. Keep us posted :) and good luck.

The PSE on the 997 is a sad immitation of that fitted to the 996. I had the latter (in C4S form) and have the former in the same form. One barked a lot, the other growls a bit.

You will find previous links, if you go back far enough, about this.

The current PSE (though I believe the same did apply to the 996 PSE) works on revs, not speed. Thus, unless you run around in first at 30 mph, the revs will be such that it will not 'engage' and thus not be, er, louder. This is because it wouldn't do for a proper sports car like a 911 to sound like one in a built-up area. Now ask yourself how many times you have seen the Police pull over some 15 year old numpty in Saxo VTS (with ironing board taped to the back) for either 1) having an 'adjusted' exhaust (oh, and don't forget to ring up their insurer because such 'adjustments' will render that insurance useless), 2) having the music so loud as to not be able to hear the emergency services and 3) just being a wanker.

The prosecution rests.

Derek,

I am with you on this one.

A 'noisy' exhaust is a noisy exhaust when you live within earshot ( 1-2 miles when the wind is in the wrong direction ) of a main road and have to listen to Johnny Ahole tearing up and down all day long enjoying his 'rights'

PSE owner.

yes, there are plenty of Jo A holes to go around too with enormous exhaust pipe diameters on shopping trolleys!

yeah, some guy overtook me in a dangerous spot the other day in a scoobie and threw up loads of stones and nearly caused a huge accident. I was left with some nasty stone chips, but thankfully no accident[8|]

Yes. yes, yes Boys, but the point I was making is that to the untrained, regular citizen in the streets ear, even our gorgeous, expensive and beautifully crafted PSE systems are loud, arrogant and inconsiderate.

Making lots of noise is like speeding, there is a time and a place and who can be the just arbiter of that ?

Yves
