997 carrera exhaust note

ORIGINAL: YvesD

Yes. yes, yes Boys, but the point I was making is that to the untrained, regular citizen in the streets ear, even our gorgeous, expensive and beautifully crafted PSE systems are loud, arrogant and inconsiderate.

Making lots of noise is like speeding, there is a time and a place and who can be the just arbiter of that ?

Therein was my point - in short hand scoobies amonst other rapid and lound metal have now become cheap enough for numpties to have them, they speed and roar indescriminently giving the oirignal Scooby enthusiast and by association with fast cars us, the bad rep.

I was just using a scoobie as an example before I get kicked

Choosing time and place is most important.

However contrary to earlier comment I find with windows down the PSE sounds awfully nice but not too loud in 3rd at around 25 - 30 mph. Town cruising[:D]

Numerous school kids and for that matter young ladies on their way to work seem to appreciate the noise.:ROFLMAO:

From the perspective of a non-PSE owner I think the stock exhaust note from within and outside the car is just right. Even this can be considered loud when you're standing behind a 997 in rocket-mode!

Hi,
I couldn't agree more which is why I bought a TechArt Exhaust for mine which transformed the look and sound of my Carerra 'S' . Which I have just sold back to a dealer who didn't want the TechArt item so I had the standard kit refitted.

SO, I have a TechArt Exhaust for Sale which cost £2000 fitted but as its sat in the garage I am open to offers. Give me a call if you are interested I am sure we can work something out so that I get some of my money back and you get a very cheap sports exhaust when compared with new prices.

Cheers

I agree with the anti-social link, but what I was trying to say is that the PSE we are talking about is fitted to a sports car and

1) that a sports car should sound like, er, a sports car (without the need to deafen anyone walking merrily along the pavement in a built-up area),

2) that the PSE is a manufacturer-sanctioned option,

3) it won't deafen anyone in a built-up area because the rev range in which it works,

4) that sooo many other numpties weld drainpipes to their twatmobiles, sound stupid, offend everyone (including those in built-up areas) and invalidate their insurance (should they have bothered to insure their 'vehicle' in the first place) and

5) they won't even get stopped to account for their, totally inconsiderate and dangerous, actions.

Meanwhile, as per the chap in last Sunday's Sunday Times In Gear Section, you and I will exceed the speed limit on a deserted motorway and get three points and a £65 tax bill.

Splendid!

Good thread chaps, the one point no-one has mentioned with regards to the original post, is the Boxsters better sound inside is due to induction roar not exhaust noise.

Porsche are getting better at engineering the internal sound levels of the 911, witness the new GT3's combination of opening exhaust valve & trick induction roar!

The sports exhaust problem is this, in order to get an awesome internal sound you need a VERY loud system as the sound gets left behind as you drive, this then makes your car sound like a tractor outside & frankly is rather anti-social as the other guys have said, so you end up compromising for best balance! I had a loud system on a previous Porker & inside it sounded better than 360 at high revs, but outside it was OTT & I wouldn't go there again! These days the good aftermarket systems are offered in loud , medium & standard forms, alla Cargraphic, medium seems the way to go! The approved PSE system is very tempting at the £1200 quoted fitted, unless you can get a cheap enough deal on a used aftermarket alternative!

Stefan, do you have any video clips of the sound from the techart? Also, where abouts in the country are you / did you have the system fitted? Regards, Ronnie.

You know what, I need to get someone else to drive my GT3 so I can hear just how loud it is outside. I must admit the noise in the cabin is just about right the way it kicks in at 4k revs. I drive across a dam quite regularly where people walk alongside, I quite often give it a few beans in sport mode, 4k revs as the sound nicely bounces off the walls. It is very rare that people turn to see what is making the noise which leads me to think it isnt really that loud & anti social outside the car.
I mean its nothing compared to a Harley Davidson, how come they are allowed to make such a din?..also hairdryer scooters & the Max power nova/corsa brigade...blooming awful noise, so I certainly wouldnt worry about your porsche noise at all.
