997 Problems

Although the 997 is a most reliable car, mine for example had no faults at all, I think it would be a good idea if we listed the problems that owners have had. So here goes

1. Handbrake failure (1).
2. TMC inoperative on MY 05.(all)
3. Premature tyre wear on track. (some?)
4. Wheel nuts rusting.(few)
5. Telephone handset performance poor (all)
6. Windows drop after car left locked (1)
7. PCM speedo display fails/displays incorrect data (1)
8. Excessive tyre noise (most)
9. Possible RMS failure? (1)

Could owners drop a note on this forum so that I can collate.

Hi Derek,

I must say that (fingers crossed) I have had no real trouble with my Dec 04 997S. I would agree with you about the tyre noise (I have Michelin Pilot Sports) and the TMC issue but otherwise I have no complaints. and have not experienced the majority of the faults you have outlined.

I have Park Assist on mine and very occasionally when reversing, the system emits a constant high-pitched tone rather than the expected 'beep beep' sound, but this is easily resolved by putting the car into neutral and then selecting reverse again. Apart from this I can't really fault it.

[Oh, there is one thing wrong with it..........no-one lets me out at junctions!![;)]]

Derek,

Happy to give you a few more!

1. Faulty phone module
2. Cracking of headlight lenses
3. Creaking rear bushes

Front springs faulty causing creaking noise - fixed under warranty and affected small batch of cars

Headlamps steaming up inside in wet weather - not fixed and recognised as a problem on xenon equipped cars

I've had the park sensor constant beep issue a few times as described above

TMC!

Various intermittent interior trim rattles (mainly from speaker housing & passenger seat)

Yes to Michelin tyre noise

Corroding tailpipes - remedied by fitting the chrome finished ones

My car was built in Dec 04

Creaking front springs - seems to come and go!
Fuel flap locking pin not operating - 10 min fix at OPC.
Apart from that - absolutly brilliant!
Oh yes TMC!

My car has had a leaking off-side radiator (350 miles) and I must agree with the comments on tyre noise. Apart from these the car is brilliant.

Derek

Front nearside tyre worn to canvas on wall at 5000 miles. Rears need replacing at 6000 miles. 911 S after three track days. Squeek at rear when pedal depressed. Registered 03/03/05 built in FEB 05.

Derek 05 car just had 20k service, other than TMC no problems. Interstingly AFN want ÂŁ350 for new discs and say TMC will work!!!

Not going to pay

Isn't that the noise it makes just before hitting something?! [:D]

TMC is inoperative.

Satnav maps are out of date by a matter of years in some areas.

Telephone performance is exceptionally poor. Apparently my OPC has a temporary fix by relocating the microphone but I'm hoping a permanent solution isn't far away. The phone also crashes occasionally and needs to be switched off and on to resume operation.

Excessive tyre noise.

Loss of oil due to a faulty seal which has since been replaced. Working fine now.

Cruise control wasn't working when the car was first delivered due to it not being commissioned correctly at the factory. It's working fine now.

Despite these items, it's a great car. I'm just disappointed that Porsche is responsible for the worst new car experience I have ever had.

TMC inoperative.

My car runs on Pirellis which are fine over most surfaces.

Annoyingly, haven't been able to turn off the Sat/Nav voice and just have map guidance. Guildford OPC didn't know how to do it. has anyone else figured out a way to do it?

Otherwise 5,000 miles of troublefree motoring since April.

No major problems, but interested that others have the front suspension noise. Only get it over speed humps and the like, so you've now prompted me to call the OPC this morning to get it fixed.

Mine's an early car (Nov 04) so no TMC.

LOL! The occasional high-pitched tone is definately different to the one that warns you of impending disaster (I hope!) [:D]

For turning Sat/nav voice off try going in to NAVI set and then selecting NAVI fix ON the volume is set independently of the audio volume

Dereck what do you intend to do with the list?

Car delivered July 05
- Phone Mic unusable while driving. They have offered a temp fix to relocate above head until complete fix is vailable. Its due to the mic being in the steering column and picking up transmitted road noise apparently
- Sat nav maps up to 6 years out of date on latest Porsche DVD
- Cambus radio induced whine while ignition is on. Response not fixable apparently its part of the nature of the car... live with it
- Poor quality panel fitting between front fender and bonnet
- Windows dropped while parked just once
- Car delivered witout a complete PDI (tyre pressure etc)

I am about to collate all these problems to save members scrolling down though the messages. What happens next is then up to the next RS. You will be aware that, having sold my 997S, I have resigned the post. Apparantly a successor has been appointed who will no doubt continue in the same vein I have followed. I wish him luck.

Sat Nav stopped working (cant lock on to signal)
Wing mirror cracked no apparent reason. Still waiting for new one 3 weeks later.

Otherwise brilliant.

On my own car I've had the front susp sqeeak like a few others but apart from the rubbish sat nav no real other complaints except I'd love PASM to come with a L.S.D. as standard instead of having to go for the full sport suspension which wouldn't be fun on my local bumpy roads. My friend however bought a new boxster S and blew up the first one after 5500 miles (suspected rms) and to top it off he blew the second one as well after 3000 miles,(courtesy boxster S while waiting for repair) then got his full retail money back from porsche.
997 c2s march 05 11000 miles.

Sorry bad choice of words as i was being lazy and was just being short. All I know is that the first time it happened he had just come to a stop in traffic after being on a run and something went in the engine and and it shot its fluids ie water and oil into the boot and dropped the rest onto the road and it got pretty "toasty" shall we say and the second time it happened it went as he was going pretty slowly and dropped it's fluids on the road again and had to picked up by porsche again. I've had a 986 S and theres a normal 986 in the family and we've never had any problems with them or my old 996 c2 but there obviously is the odd few.
