997 Problems

hi, please see my new post re: suspension probs http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=161101

Only other things to go wrong are..... rattling dashboard (intermittant fault) and seems to develop them from differing parts of the dashboard which go away and then come back again (probably to do with heat). Clattering Noise from windscreen wipers. (Ive changed the wiper blades, but this has made no difference.) Sat nav is so bad (compared to other modern day versions.) hands free phone is rubbish (mic problem) I thought the multifunction steeringwheel would be a lot more user friendly but its pretty useless. Passenger seat folding mechanism (to gain access to rear of car) has broken. Chrome tail exhaust pipes are badly corroded. Gear change into second gear is very sticky. Although the car is supposed to be having a warranty recall for the gear change mechansim today (so Im wondering if that will rectify this fault.)

Apart from that I love the car, although this suspension problem is a little worrying at the moment, and Ive lost all faith in driving the car at higher speed.

.... oh, and I'll watch with interest regarding the rear main oil seal issue. Our last car a 2001, 996 C2 went through x4 rear main oil seals before we sold the car. I cant believe they havent sorted this problem on the new 997!!!!!?!?!?!?!

Derek (I Know you've moved on)......... two little problems with 997 C2S (MY06), both fixed quickly & courteously by OPC Sheffield.
1. Interior lights (centre and footwells) did not switch off when door was closed from inside. so had to manually switch them off.
2. My car has the fire extinguisher fitted under the driver seat - this mounting ratttled until refitted.
Good luck.

A few niggles with mine too.

1. Rattling, squeaking dashboard and both doors ( intermitant, the worst sort ). Cured by turning Bose up !
2. Faulty stitching on drivers seat ( being replaced by OPC next monday ).
3. Squeaking passenger seat.
4. Possibly the clonking noises from the suspension but not sure as I have no reference point.
5. Very minor, but there never the less, paint fault on rear arch.
6. Handbrake doesnt work instantly, first couple of teeth broken ?.

No problems with Nav or phone system so far.

Sounds worse than it is in reality and certainly no worse than the several brand new BMW's Ive had recently, all of which were in and out of the dealers regularly for various faults. Some serious.

Fantastic car when all is said and done. Just not perfect, but then what is ?

I have just read every thread above and can only say.......you remember the famous initials in sales KISS........KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID...........mind you the oil leaks are a bit disturbing..........sorry for salt in the wound but guess what after nearly four years ownership of a 13 year old high performance 911 zero problems absolutely nothing (unlike standard C2/4 964) other than one rear number plate bulb..........

Of course, with an older car the previous owner (s) will have sorted out most of the defects for you if they are dilligent enough which is another potential benefit of buying pre-owned.

I dont think its possible to build a zero defect car, they can get close but in the end some of it is assembled by human hand and we get tired, make mistakes ( and hope no one will notice ) and have to meet deadlines.

Some of the issues I have had are splitting hairs really but at this price level One expects 'perfection', unreasonably or otherwise. Also, sometimes its better to accept a minor defect and get on with life because the fix invariably creates another minor issue somewhere.

I recently bought a new Renault Clio 1.5dci for a runabout and although the Porsche is undoubtably much, much better built, the number of 'defects' I have found on each car is greater in the Porsche. Sad fact.

As I said previously though the 997 is a joy to drive and most people who will never have the opportunity to own a vehicle like this would consider us slightly mad for the things we get excited about.

Happy New Year to you a All

Regards

Yves

Other than routine maintenance and non-durables i.e clutch and bearing in mind nature of the beast, I have never heard of any problems from owners who owned these cars from new, indeed there are a few garage queens around which are driven from time time with a few thousand kilometres on the clock. The fact is a car with bare electrics and no computer aided gizmo's (ABS accepted) has to be the simplest and most cost effective long term motoring as well as the most fun......time has chosen...By the way love the retro styling of the 997 and look forward to seeing the 997RS........

I am due to collect a Sept'04 C2S with 12k miles on the clock on Saturday, so obviously have read all the above with some interest!

Coming from a relatively fault free M3, I am hoping to "drop lucky" again, the only items from the lists above which are of great concern being oil seals and noisy/faulty suspension (BTW are the noisy suspension units related to standard Carrera, PASM or sports suspension variants?)

I am assuming that as my car is an early version, I will not need to worry about the TMC issue as my car won't have it? (I don't really know about or need sat/nav, but have picked a car with it for later resale purposes as I have suffered by not having it in the BMW).

Anyway, here's hoping I am not back on this thread next week adding my own list of woes!

Hi nsm3,

Try not to worry about the RMS issue, from what I ve gleaned its certainly not as serious as the almost commonplace engine gremlins which haunted the E46 M3 ( my Feb 02 model was recalled for the potentially exploding big end bearing shells to be replaced ! ).

If you can, see if the OPC will let you 'snag' the vehicle prior to delivery proper so that any issues you find can be dealt with in advance. These cars are actually very well put together and possibly because of this we look even harder to see that everything is perfect.

Enjoy. [:)]

Thanks YvesD, I also had the engine re-build on my April'03 car (due to recall and not a blow up and possibly one of the last?) which caused me great consternation at the time. However, I stuck with it and the car has been faultless since for 2 years.

Looking forward to the Porsche experience as it has been an ambition to own one for about 15 years when I bagged a drive in a 1990 Carrera targa (not sure of number designation 997,996, 993 etc)

You wont be dissappointed.

997 C2S is a very different experience to the M3 and certainly much more driver focussed. Like you, I loved my M3 and was very sad to see it go. The Porsche is in a performance league above though and yet just as easy to live with day to day.

Hope the snow doesnt come back for the weekend as per the forecast !

Yves

With about 500 miles now under the belt with myself (12k already on the clock), the C2S is proving to be a very impressive car, however, the few faults I have are of a rather niggling and quite surprising nature, such as a badly rattling instrument cluster, passenger seat, buzzing exhausts on tickover and a faulty boot light switch.

I didn't expect such things with a German prestige make at this level (No such problems with my BMW), however, the car is that good I can even forgive these!
