997 to 993 new owner

Made the switch y'day so guess I need to de register myself from the 997 section and register with team 993! Anyone know who I contact for this??
 
Some yrs back I had an aircooled and have yearned for another one even since I bought the 997. Also the alarming rate at which the 997 had depreciated over the last 2.5yrs made me think about about jumping into something that would hold it's value over the next few yrs. The main reason though was to own and experience what people consider to be the finest made 911. The 997 is going to take some beating as it's a brilliant car but the 993 is a very different experience. I've got this 'classic bug' I've gotta itch so the 993 was a good compromise between the 997 and owning a 70's 911 that may have proved a bit extreme to use in comparrison. Early impressions are encouraging and the sound of that engine is soooo addictive. I got a carrera 4 manual. The tiptronic models not popular seemingly.

I think you need to e mail three people :-

-Your 997 register to remove you from list
-The 993 register secretary to record your details.
-The membership person at Club office to keep your vehicle details up to date.

I'm sure all this can be done by e mail - e mail addresses in Porsche File[:)]

Over my time on this forum there have been a steady trickle of people moving from 996 to 993 and that is something I understand and have some "experience" of (only in that I originally intended to buy a 996 and made the 993 decision because of various factors but often these have overlapped with the reasons given by the people moving from 996 to 993).
I've driven 997s occassionally and, while it's a much better car than the 996, especially in its looks, it still is "not a 993" and I've wondered if people will start to make the same move from 997 to 993 as more of the 997s lose the "new car" benefit. So it's good to see someone doing it.

Tks everybody I'm learning lots about the car at the moment and there are things I want to do with it. Things like headlights and fog lamps look
tired so I'm going to order new sets of them from design 911. I've sourced some wheel centre caps and dust caps from eBay to smarten up the wheels. I'm after new foot mats for inside etc etc. Car was resprayed by PS so
it certainly looks the part but just needs odds and ends. Dials are a bit dull
at night so I was wondering if the bulbs behind the clocks can be replaced???
I'll get round to a pm to Maurice and With reg details of my car ASAP and inform the 997 guys about my sale.
Also I'm thinking about getting a suspension check
over and setup just so I know it's all handling as it should. I've noticed about an inch play both ways on the steering wheel so that needs checking out. All part of the fun though
 
Yup it's up to max already so just a case of age I guess. The front lamps are pitted and a bit dark looking so need tarring up with new lenses and bulbs I guess. New units are certainly not cheap though
 
If you do any significant fast mileage at night you may want to consider upgrading to HIDs at the same time as changing the light units.

Standard set up doesn't generate confidence.

Ok tks Andrew I'll ask about that today when I call. I'm guessing these parts are straight forward enough to fit at home??
 
HIDs are easy to fit - esp if you make sure you buy one of the kits with the smaller powerpacks (that's not the right name for them - but I can't remember what they are!) - the smaller ones can fit inside the back of the headlamp unit.
 
You can fit new bulbs to the dashborad dials. The dials themselves are only press fitted. Once they are removed, there are several screw fit bulbs that can be replaced. Some may already have blown. Don't buy the bulbs from the OPC though, look online and you can pick them up for around £1 each. Do you have the On Board Computer (OBC) fitted into your rev counter? If so this is more involved to remove as you need to remove the steering wheel to get it out, which in turn means removing the airbag!
 
i do have the onboard computer but the display on that is clear enough. its the clocks that seem a little dull. If anyone knows where to get the bulbs from ill be gratefull
 
I just replaced the fogs on mine for the same reason and they are not cheap!

I actually ended up negotiating the best deal direct with my OPC and got them for £144 each all in.

Silly money but they certainly lift the front of the car.
 
The fogs are the ones that seem to dull over badly and are the most expensive bit of that bottom row. Even design 911 wanted £135 for those and the guy on the phone didn't instill me with confidence that I'd be getting the right bits. Through eBay I can get a pair of the side reflectors for £50 delivered which is half what design 911 are asking. The actual light lenses seem £45 each wherever u try. Not a cheap excrsise.
 
Was that £135 inc the dreaded? that's a very good price. Strange too as they are listed on their site at £147.14 each + Vat!

Beware of some Ebay indicators as they are unlikely to be OEM and can look a bit crap. I recently sold a used set of original Hella clear indicators for £50.
 
Very interesting reading your experiences.

I am in the market for a 911 which will be garaged and only used on nice days in the Spring, Summer and Autumn. I have been looking at 997 C2S cars and am on the verge of buying one today but......last night I started looking at 964 and 993 cars. Read up a bit more and decided that teh 993 was the better car in terms of looks, collectability and servicing/maintenance costs out of the two.

Now I am in a dilemma - do I still pursue my original objective of a 997 or is a 993 the better buy.

I have never driven a 993 but have driven 996 and 997 cars - how different are they ?

I realise I will need to drive it for myself, but I won't be able to before seeing this 997 today so looking for some opinions.

For example, 993 Vs 997:
- How accurate or wooly is the 993 steering ?
- How heavy is the clutch and the feel of the gear change
- What is cornering like - oversteer/understeer etc ?

Thanks for any opinions

993 steering is much more talkative
Clutch is a little heavier on most 993s due to age, but a brand new clutch in a 993 is comparable to a 997
Gearchange is precise and has more throw on the 993, but feels more connected
Cornering? Depends how you drive it. I can make a 993 understeer or oversteer depending on how i enter any given corner. Very adjustable if you're used to it.
