997 to 993 new owner

Hi Spy, I went for a C2 over a C4 for purity, the increased steering feel of the C2 (after driving both), less to go wrong and because mine is only really a fair weather car (so don't need the front wheels driven as well).

I've recently come back to 993 ownership after about five years absence and ever since I sold my last one I've wanted another 993. I've owned quite a few cars and have never wanted to get the same car again, except for the 993.

It took me 12 months to find her, but it was worth the wait. You might not have to wait so long to find a great 996 or 997, but the 993 offers a very different driving experience and combines air cooled tradition with modern comforts perfectly, plus the great looks and low depreciation (compared to a 997).

Best thing would be to drive a 993 and see what you think. Where are you located?


 
Thanks Sam, I have sent you a PM with some other questions. I have pasted some of them to get other people's views as well :

Things to look for on a 997:
- Door check straps - not sure what I should be looking for here ?
- Creaks and rattles when driving
- Rust around windows
- Previous accident damage
- Recent new Clutch
- Recent Brakes and discs
- Top end rebuild - is this a common fault ?
- Suspension comments - is this due to age or mileage ?
- Fully documented history and old MOTs (to verify work and mileage)

Anything else I should look for ?

Also, is there a list of essential options the car must have ?
...and, any desireable options ?

May be too late if you've done the deal, but:

- 993 steering is not, or should be, at all wooly. The light but direct steering has always been one of the 911's best features, and this is true of all I've driven from 3.0 SCs up to 996s.
-The clutch feel varies from car to car, but it isn't agricultural like the older cars (915 box). Mine feels slightly sharper than my 996 did, but not much in it. The gear change is superb, way better than any other I've driven, but I haven't driven a 997.
- The 993 was the first 911 to have multi-link rear suspension which makes the rear much more compliant and better riding. It also makes the handling more forgiving. However, it is still a car with a heavy lump behind the rear axle and no traction control, and it will oversteer like a barsteward if you provoke it. If you want something with clever electronics so you can mash the throttle and get away with it then a 996 or 997 is for you (and I understand the real world appeal of that), but for my money the air cooled cars are all more fun.

Also bear in mind that a 993 should not lose much, if anything, in value, whereas a 997 is still a good way up the depreciation curve. Pretty car though...

The 933 is very different to the way a 996/997 drives. Clutch and gear change also feel different but not in a bad way. They are like chalk and cheese. You really have to try one (and a well set up one at that). Also remember in a 993 there are NO driver aids other than ABS. You are on your own with no big brother to help you out if you get it wrong.

I'd suggest that if you drive any 911 and the steering is "woolly" or the clutch heavy, then there's something not quite right[8|][;)] (er, bit of a late post, this)
 
Thanks guys. I went and had a look at the two 993 C4S cars at JZM. Didn't get to drive them but they weemed very cramped in the back. I wanted to be able to get my 9 year old in the back now and then but I don't think it will be possible in a 993.

Shame as they are gorgeous looking cars. Also, the two they had there, one looked great condition wise but the wrong colour. The other, a paladium metallic, was better in colour but not as good condition. I think I would need to spend a lot of money to get one in teh condition I want.

The 997 may be the better car for me.

For example, 993 Vs 997:
- How accurate or wooly is the 993 steering ?
- How heavy is the clutch and the feel of the gear change
- What is cornering like - oversteer/understeer etc ?
The recent posts on steering slack are the first I have seen - so I don't think it's a general issue and mine is lock solid and precise.
Clutch: Significantly heavier than 996/7 - but that is part of the experience!
Cornering is just amazing - but so are 996/7 (but you can't, in my view, tell that it is amazing in a 996/7)

Like you have realised, you really do need to drive them yourself to understand.

The advantage of a 996/7 is there are many more available, you have to see buying a 993 as quite an long term hunt.

Whatever you decide they are all truely great cars.
 
I guess it depends on how tall the other front passenger is? Have you tried to fit him in a 997?

By the time he gets to 12 I don't think he would even get in a 997 would he?

He definitely fits in a 996 so I have assumed that the 997 is similar
 
If you are worried about space - then go for a 996/7.

Kids are obviously very varied in size - but my nieces (16 and 13 years) fit fine in the back of my 993 (although not with the seats right back)

My son is quite tall for his age. The 996 fitted him OK but I am sure the 993 space (and legroom with seat forward) looked to be less, although he wasn't with me when I saw the 993.
 
My kids are only 5 and 8 so rear space no real problem but having had a 997 there is a big difference in rear seat size. As far as car is concerned there are many differences but im more comfortable going forward with the 993. I have really fallen for it and i think its actually a good compromise between moden day motoring and classic 911 ownership.
