997 Turbo - Major service

I have my 4 year or 60k miles (only 25k mile on the clock) major service scheduled for next week and just noticed on the Porsche website how much more it is than a Carrera's (more than double).

So £1250 for the major service + £150 brake fluid change = £1400 incl VAT. Then anything else they think needs replacing like clutch/brakes/tryes will certainly bump up the price. Going to supply my own oil so that should help a little.

Seems a lot of money for what is in my experience a perfectly healthy car.

What kind of bills have you guys seen for the first major service? Any tips (such as ignore OPC suggestions of cylinder pressure tests)?

Alex

The prices on the Porsche web-site have historically not been transparent/consistent "" does it include checking the drive belt, replacing the tyre sealant, airbag inspection... The price list did not used to include the spark plug change but now does for the Turbo it would appear "" whether it does or not for the Carrera (=> non-Metzger) is not clear"¦

If you talk to independents you will probably find they can do the lot for south of 1K. There is a labour issue with the turbo, GT3 etc. as the OPCs insist (per Porsche standards"¦) on removing the rear bumper but it seems the job can be done without this "" not sure about the pros/cons of removing bumpers versus presumably using a more adaptable tool to access the plugs"¦

Yes I know there is a lot of labour for changing the spark plug as I think you have to remove the Turbos to get to them! The website says £1250 includes changing of the plugs.

Look on the brightside Alex. That's only £700 per year for the last two years of motoring. Not many cars out there where you can get away with that little when you have 540 bhp under your right foot! Anyway, 10% off parts and labour?

Hi Alex, I had my 4-yr major service done in July. The costs were pretty much as your estimate, using same "˜offsets' obtained by supplying my own oil & getting 10% PCGB parts discount. OPC will probably suggest an aircon service as well, also an air bag "˜service' (see maintenance book page 29). Poly belt needs checking (part of service?, but was shown separately on my invoice). The tyre sealant is lifed at 4 yrs (check date on the sticker- they say it "˜gunks' up), so if you get new OEM sealant this will be circa £35.

Regards, Andy L-T

Did you renew your warranty and is so did you pay the full £180.00 plus vat for the 111 point check if it was done at the same time?

AT last renewal this charge was waived but this time they will not budge.

My major service and renewal is now due.

Thanks Andy - useful information.

I will forgo anything that doesn't warrant changing at 24k miles on the clock, not the scheduled 60k the first major service is supposed to be at.

Warranty? What's that?!! Lost mine at 50 miles old when I changed the wheels to non-OEM [:D]

The £1000+ a year saving though has been offset by 3 front rads (£1600) and whatever comes tomorrow!

I guess you are saying that the warranty is worth the money!!

Not for me thus far anyway. I have saved ££££ by not paying for an extended warranty.

Sorry I hadn't the info I needed to judge ie age of car.

Mine is 2008 and all I had from the extended 2 year warranty was replacement of right rear TPI sender so you are quite right it has not been worth it for me. No idea what that cost and I later found out that it was done by a tyre sepcialist! I wondered why the mileage had increased so much!

An OPC advised me that if serviced at the same time they would only need another 0.5hr to complete the 111 check (this normally takes 1.5hrs, although my closer OPC reckoned on 3hrs last time!).

Thanks for that, concurrs with my estimate from looking at the list. I would be prepared to pay for around .5 to .75 which I offered but no joy.

My 111 point check was carried out at the same time as the 2yr service (July) and the OPC did agree with a little arm twisting to do it FOC .

Your problem seems to be a lack of competition !

LIke Geoff, when the car is being serviced at the same time, they have never charged for the inspection.

You are spot on there, a monopoly is great for business but not for the customer!

Car dropped off - now comes the pacing...

Some tasty motors down at the OPC today though:
