997 TURBO PDK LAUNCH!

This was more my point rather than fastest A to B in the real world. The stock Turbo just never got me excited with its turbo lag, muted exhaust and under-steering suspension. The GT2, Scud, and LP560-4 do the lot!

Saying all that, my pic of the 3 would be the LP560-4 as it has 4wd and is made by Audi so would be more 'practical' than the other 2. Plus those looks

As you will recall, I drove its predecessor the Superleggera up at Millbrook last year.

I actually found it to be a surprisingly good car - although I have never been a great Lambo fan. It had a very nice V10 motor and was quite agile for a biggish brute, but it certainly lacked the finesse and 'feel' of both the Porsche and the Ferrari. These companies seem to place much more emphasis on driver involvement as part of the overall package. Practicality - have you tried reversing one?? and you definitely need the front lifter.

I'm sure the latest offering is improved again but it still wouldn't be my first choice - it also has a 35% higher price tag than the Turbo ! [&:]

Yes the LP560-4 seems to have moved on from the old Gallardo. I loved the TogGear review:

I always think that usability comes into play with the Porsche.
As an 'event' you can't argue that the opposition really are running rings around the Turbo
However at the moment its running costs and its usability it what makes me stick with the 911

Well I find the Turbo's back seats are only good as a parcel shelf really. You can't fit real sized people in them. So for me at least, as long as there is enough luggage space for a suitcase or shopping then I would have no problem losing the rear seats.

I would say the Turbo and LP560-4 are about level on usability from a driving point of view. You are pretty much driving a 4wd Audi with the Lambo, so great in all weather conditions.

As for running costs and reliability, again Audi vs Porsche, so not much in it these days. I would certainly have more reservations about using a Ferrari more than 5,000 miles per year though. Running costs yes the Turbo may be the cheapest but not by much. The Lambo combined MPG is 18.8 and I get about 21-22 out of my Turbo.

So from a practical stand-point yes the Turbo is still the winner. But we are talking 'supercars' here and practicality is usually last on the list of requirements. Purchase price is the only significant differentiator for me and as such this would make the LP560-4 clone the R8 V10 a very viable alternative.

My planned future car purchases look like this though:
  • Current tuned 997 Turbo - keep forever
  • Current tuned Audi S3 - trade in for RS4 Avant or RS6 Avant next year (for family purposes)
  • 2012 ish - start looking at electric/hydrogen powered sports cars
