German car magazine Autobild published in their latest edition a pictures preview of upcoming new 997 models. This includes particularly the next generation 911 Turbo, which will be introduced at the beginning of 2006. Like its predecessors, it won't be just a race car with road permission, but a genuine GT with all comfort, high driving safety and superior achievements.

The piston displacement amounts 3.8 litres with an output of 490 HP, 40 HP more than the current Turbo S. All-wheel drive will be standard from the start of supply, but a double clutch system is unfortunately only available at the beginning of 2007.

From this weeks Autocar Part 1/3

You've just made it all that much harder for me to defect from Porsche but thanks for the article. [:D]

Yummy,

Just think how awesome that will look in Basalt Black.

Placed my 'letter of intent' for one last week, just in case I can afford it when the time comes !

Will the power upgrade be available from launch ?

The appearance is starting to grow on me, as I suspected it would.
Are the doors on the 997 the same size as the 996? If so then the aluminium ones could be retrofitted to the 996 and save me 31lbs, although I think the door handle cut-outs are a different size.

It is interesting that the car does not have PCCB. What does this mean - that they don't work so well in the cold?
Or just to keep people guessing.
It is also interesting that the air box now has an inlet on both sides. Wonder if mine could do with freer breathing then.

I also think that Porsche will not claim 3.6 for the 0-60. They will be more conservative. I expect 4.0 or 3.9s will be the official figure.

However, how cool is an overboost function with 20.9 psi? Although mine gets 457lbft (if I have converted correctly) from around 12psi, so 502lbft seems like not enough. The figures don't seem to add up.

Very interesting article. This would bring me back, if only they got the whole customer service thing back. When is the launch?
letter of intent means what?

Please Mr Porsche Salesman, add me to your list of potential speculators so that as soon as Porsche actually announce the car and the order book opens good and proper, I will send you 5 grand to secure my place on the list.
It's the first stage in - "Form an orderley queue here please!"

There may be a long wait - I've had a letter of intent in for 1 year and was told on Saturday to expect to have to wait another 18 months for a car because there are so many other customers already waiting (996 TT customers) and dealer allocations will be limited. European launch is expected to follow the Geneva show in March which means UK cars starting around June build slot.

I have put my 5K down today for a 997 Turbo Cab. Hopefully I will be well placed in the queue for next year.[:)]

PS, I fancy a Yellow one.

Could be a bit cynical here as I was told the same story - my LoI is for Mar 07. There again when i ordered my 997 in July 04 it was initially promised for June 05, this then dropped back to April, then March and it actually arrived at the OPC early Feb 05. It sounds like a contract race - great way of swelling the OPC's bank balance for the next 12-18 months though! Let's face tho' the interest rates are c..p anyway!

It's still money for nothing though [:D]

Thanks for posting that Ronnie, interesting article, could be tempted, but a 2 year wait!!!
No doubt the blo**y speculators will have a boat load for sale at 5-10k over list, for immediate delivery, maybe if Porsche put some sort of a re-sale clause in the contract, this would stop the speculator market?

Problem is that any car manufacturer loves the speculators "our cars are so desirable that people will pay a premium" Often gets a few lines in the Sunday times too (free advertising) and .. it makes people think that the residuals will be better......which usually isn't true unless you sell very early.

But mine has 550+ BHP
0-60 3.8 secs
700nm Torque

Sat Nav/TV/ipod

Anyone want to offer £90K+ for it!!!!

Evo has the same pictures this month, apparently they "pulled some strings" and "called in some favours". Seems like they weren't the only ones[&:]

They have stuck with the 3.6l engine, against some of the earlier claims of 3.8. I thought they would not re-engineer it.
They claim 0.7mpg average better, not that it matters.
They also says it has a fancy computer controlled central diff - we'll wait to see what that does to the driving experience. Gut feel suggests to me it is not really necessary, and is a bit more technology than is really necessary. I'd be worried about whether it is just another thing to go wrong - mechanical things I can understand, but electronics seem prone to random "issues".

The 501lbft of torque on overboost seems to be true (for 10secs). I think of any negative point for that though.
This is what will give it the lower 0-62mph time.

The only concern is over the variable turbines - more complexity equals more to go wrong. I like things to be simple.

It promises to be outstanding and I think it'll be a main attraction at Geneva. I was wondering how they would beat the 996, but it seems they just might (at least in standard trim). The look is growing on me but still not sure about the bars with lights in the front nostrils and the rear exhausts, but the rest is quite good, esp. in yellow.
I think they should have kept the turbo style wheels, although maybe there will be a few detail items they have up their sleeve for Geneva.
Seems that even in "unfavourable" conditions it was 7 secs quicker round the 'Ring that a 420bhp 996. However with 480bhp it should be. It doesn't seay how it compares to the 996 turbo S.

They comment that the 996 turbo made up 15% of all 911 sales.
I guess this is good news for those that want to buy a 2nd hand one, and good news for Porsche and the bean counters.
But unless a whole load of them get wrapped around trees or people start buying to keep, then depreciation will be a fact of life for quite some time.
Oh well, it just means there will be many more members to contribute to the turbo register and more for me to bore to death[;)]
