997TT side sill - refitting rubber "mud guard"

I've noticed that the off side rubber mud guard (for want of a better word), which projects from the underside of the sill and abuts the rear wheel arch, doesn't seem to be fitted correctly. There are a few rubber tabs which are exposed. It looks like it should be a simple task to slide the tabs home but they don't appear to want to :)

Any suggestions or tips on getting these to engage or perhaps a link to some pics to aid refitting these would be very helpful.

Thank you.

I gave up trying and took it into a body shop who also repaired the area damaged when I dislodged the rubber flap.

Had this happen twice now. Have put up with it for months but decided to sort it out at OPC. Needs a new sill as can't be repaired. Cost of £800. Ouch.

The tabs fit into slots in the sill cover and are located with raised bosses on their bases that prevent them pulling back down. It's one of the lowest points on the car and therefore vulnerable to impacts and displacement. Give yourself some room by jacking the car up. No need to raise the wheel off the ground, but lift the wheel arch a little. Clean up all the surfaces, smear some Fairy Liquid dish washing soap on the rubber surface, then feed the tabs back through their respective slots. Use a blunt, thin screw drive blade or similar to carefully drive the boss on each tab through. It's a job that needs regular repetition. You can also remove the sill cover, which makes the job easier, but this involves removing quite a few fasteners. Regards, Clive.

The sill is pricey but not that bad. I've just paid £360 incl. VAT and Club discount. It comes complete with new clips and rubber mud flap. It's pretty straight forward to fit provided you're reasonably competent with vehicle maintenance. Regards, Clive

Thanks Clive. You would not believe the road debris which has accumulated inside the rubber. I'll try jacking as you suggest tomorrow. Once I've rinsed the rest of the rubbish off I'll get the Fairy out too :)

Mark, You're welcome. Good luck. Ralph, Painting? Oh yes, I forgot...................... that was £440!! [:D]:ROFLMAO: Regards, Clive

I'll check the price again with the OPC. They did say that the sill was about £320 and circa £500 to paint. I thought it sounded mad, but apparently thats it. Does it sound right to you?

Sill About right. Paint, remove old sill and fit new cost me around £550, any old body shop can do it more cheaply but Porsche body shop gives warranty but not against knocking it again...

I was joking guys, hence the smilees! £360 for the part, £50 for the painting and ½ hour to fit, simples. [;)] Regards, Clive.

I've got no doubt that the local Porsche approved body shop would charge £550 to paint and fit but it's really a case of charging whatever they want because the market will stand it. My 997TT is in the body shop next week having the front and rear PU's painted. It's not Porsche approved although they are approved by Aston Martin and Bentley. The total will be £500 which includes removing and fully dismantling, preparing, painting, reassembling and refitting.

Job done! What a pain in the ar$e! Ended up taking the wheel off and partially unfixing the wheel arch liner to give better access but if I hadn't I'd probably still have been fiddling away in another few hours :)

Just been in to pay my painting bill - price went up - it's now £75! [:(] Regards, Clive

I have a set of side sills removed from my 997TT a couple of months ago. they are in excellent condition, removed because I had GT2RS sills fitted. They are painted in Basalt Black, if anyone is interested in buying them. I'm abroad for 3 weeks more, but if you can wait until I get home I can ship them out.

It's not cheap, the sills are 262 GBP + VAT each. plus fitting and painting (if you want them painting which I didn't) Not a brilliant photo but the only one I have currently.

Hi Isy, So the finish on your RS sill is just black plastic? Are they simple to fit - like the originals, just bolt on? Cheers.

Yes just black plastic finish, the same as the front lip on the bumper. I had them fitted by Revolution Porsche in Brighouse so I have no idea how hard or easy they are to fit.
