A bad start to my 944 experience

if you only paid £1600 for it i shouldn't think its worth spending a lot of money on it. It will soak up thousands £ if you are not careful.
You could pop the head drop the sump and pop the bearings off of the 2x pistons push them out the top to replace the rings.

A used lump could turn out as bad as yours.

if I were you I'd buy a cheap used motor and rebuild it at your leisure . Spread the cost of the bits over a few months . Drive your car as it is until you are ready to swop your rebuilt engine in the summer
 
Its certainly an option worth thinking about . Ignoring the engine smoking you really wouldn't think it was a £1600 car .

something else which points to piston rings , rev it with the oil filler cap off and you get a decent amount of exhaust coming out .

Try clicking the email link as they get through ok,engine is now out of the car and ready to go.where abouts are you based ?? edit i had pm's disabled but they are sorted now.
