A couple of Questions

Just been thinking about a few jobs to do on the car and I have some questions.

1) How easy/hard is it to replace the dashtop how long does it take and how much is a LHD top going to cost me? Any specialist tools required?

2) My engine is running fine but the paint is flaking off the lower part and makes the whole engine bay look a bit scruffy. Can I paint this area, what sort of paint should I use, and how should I prepair the surface?

I' m not a complete mechanical numpty but I' m not exactly an expert either.
 
Dash top isn' t too hard to replace but it is expensive, you may want to try the States for the best deal, buy a complete unit and replace the one you have.
There are a couple of folks on the forum who are shipping stuff back soon I believe so you could ask if you can piggy back in their container?

The ' tin wear' that surrounds the engine is a complex set of elements and is usually powder coated when folks do a restoration. This involves removing the engine though. If you want to just paint the flat parts rather than doing this try to find Wurth Satin Black paint. What you don' t really want to do is use spray whilst the engine is in, nothing better for clogging up your carbs than paint spray.

If its the engine bay itself, I have just done mine with the engine out using Halfords Hi Temp Satin Black which produced a nice result. Although it took me 4 days to strip it!

It' s actually the engine block that is flaking most of the bits are in pretty good shape.
 
wish it was mine! need to wait a while for mine to look like that...
The engine itself should not be painted at all really (originally), it should be bare alloy.
 
Garfield - I said it b4 and I' ll say it again - you will sucumb to the power of 4 cylinders!
 
not sure I would use paint stripper as this could interfere with the various seals and gaskets. bit of a loss what to suggest... anyone? wire brush?
 
Bullet - replacing the dashtop isn' t particularly difficult as Gavin said above but it is time-consuming & expensive. First off you will need to remove the windscreen to allow access to all the fixings & the easiest way to do this involves slicing through the rubber screen seal with a sharp-bladed knife (eg Stanley knife) - after carefully prising out the aluminium mouldings. Thus you need to add the cost of a new screen seal, plus possibly the services of a professional windscreen fitter (someone who has extensive experience of fitting 911 windscreens) since refitting the screen can be a real pain as the aluminium mouldings need to be inserted into the rubber seal before the whole assembly is fitted to the car. If the mouldings are not seated within the rubber correctly, then the corners will often ' pop out' necessitating removing the screen & starting the whole process again! If you' re really unlucky & your screen is quite old (& hence brittle) the chances are that it will crack vertically right down the middle! Then there is the cost of the dashtop itself - most of the LHD dashtops in the US that appear on ebay have cracks but often don' t declare this unless you ask. " Hardly visible once the screen is installed" is a common phrase! You are far better off trying to locate a good secondhand dash in Germany - but make sure you get the correct dashtop for your car as the design changed several times during the production run.

Very occasionally it is possible to find bargains over here - I picked up a MINT LHD dashtop for my car via Loot for £100...

I remove the windscreen by sitting in the car and gently pushing on the screen with both feet. Southbound can source new LHD dashtops, but they are very expensive. I have yet to see a decent one advertised and I have been looking for one for my 70 2.2E for months.

oooookkkkkkk, the window removal scares me so I think that one can move down the list and I will finish the exterior first.
 
Using my method I have removed 2 front and 2 rear screens without any damage to the screen, rubbers, trim or paint. The dashtop comes out in about 10 minutes after that.

AHHHH .. the curse of the 912' ers ....

I definitely think someone has reversed into me in a car park. I' m having trouble getting the bonnet open now (it rubs against the inside of the front bumper protectors). I suspect the bumper mounting brackets have been bent.

Anyone idea how big a job it is to take off the front bumper and sort this out ?

All in all it' s been a very bad week for the car !! I promise never to go over to the dark side and diss the 912 again !!
 
The bonnet curse is what I hope you are talking about.

I' m quite upset about bonnet pop at the moment, got the car into PP and you can see the bonnet has lifted, damn....

Still it' s not done it for ages now.

Taking of the front bumper is a two man job really, its darn heavy and you don' t want to drop it. It' s ages since I did it, my memory is hazy, but it' s just bolted from behind, just make sure you support it.

I found getting it back on and aligned properly was by far the hardest bit, definatly the two person kind of job.

 

Shit ... that' s just what I didn' t want to hear !!

Can anyone recommend a good body shop in London that could do it fairly quickly. I have some rust under the bonnet in the usual place which I should really get sorted out too !!

Any help gratefully appreciated. I' ll take back everything I said about the 912 ...
