Unfortunately I dont think they offer ppf from factory on the Cayman/Boxter. Shame really as I'd have considered having it fitted.

We all know that factory fitted swirl marks can be a major issue and I'd have the concern that the paint finish underneath would be full of swirls and sanding marks. Using an outside agency means I know the paint will be flawless when the pdf is fitted.

Does the cruise control give you the speed limiter function as well or is it just cruise?

On my 2009 987.2 CS cruise control is just that, and the speed limiter function is a separate entity. I would imagine that the 718 will be the same.

By the way, a reputable PPF supplier that I spoke to reckoned that it was a waste of time and money removing the swirls before applying the film because it had the effect of hiding any blemishes.

The single stage polish comes as part of the prep for fitting the PPF so is included in the price.

I dont really use cruise nor adaptive cruise on the car I have now so it would be wasted on me. It was the limiter I was interested in for the ruddy motorway speed restrictions[]

Oddly enough Dan, cruise control is something I'd always specify - especially on a Porsche!

I use it all the time in our speed-regulated land - 30mph, 40mph, you name it, I use it - just like a hand-throttle (you're probably too young to remember those!). I find that it allows me to concentrate on the driving without worrying about the speed creeping up - something that far too easy to do in modern cars.

By the way, the limiter on my 987.2 is only audible and doesn't physically restrict the speed. Unless things have changed, you'll need to specify cruise control for that.

Re paint swirls etc; when I had my 991.2 new I asked the dealers to NOT wash it. Took it, complete with transporter filth, straight to Topaz detailing in London for detail and full PPF. They commented that Porsche paintwork is some of the best they see from manufacturers, and they rarely have factory paint faults. Which was nice to know.

As your order is not yet finalised, have you considered the headlights. The standard halogen headlights on the 981 were some of the poorest headlights I've ever encountered on a 21st century car, and I'm given to understand that the 718's downrated standard xenons are not much better. If you do drive on unlit roads after dark the the £615 for bi-xenons will be money very well spent.

Small update

OPC Preston graciously let us have a Cayman for the day earlier this week so Er in Doors could have a blast.

Whilst driving through Cheshire she was a little quiet then came out with the words I wanted to hear, "I can see why people get addicted to these'!! I was totally shocked. She was absolutely loving it.

Anyway, lunch at Mere brought on some discussions on options and we've decided to add the following.

1.Climate. Main reason being as the sun was coming out I found myself reaching over and turning the heat down (loaner was manual AC). Then when the sun went in we turned it up again! Nightmare. I really couldn't be doing that all the time so that sealed that one.

2. Bi-Xenon with PDSL. After reading numerous comments on forums, I thought this was probably a worthy upgrade plus I like the look of the smaller 4 point DRLs in the front. I managed to save a whole £5 by adding the washer nozzles in deviated colour then selecting night blue metallic. Seems strange that if you tick the 'washer nozzles in body colour' its £143 and yet the other option is £138. Anyway I decided on matt black instead. Just to be different.

3. Wheel centres in colour. Just to add a small amount of colour to the outside.

4. Coloured seat belts. We decided to go for Silver Grey to match the silver trim in the cabin.

5. Speed limit display. I was a little disappointed that there is no speed limiter available on this car even within the cruise option so rather than being in a situation where I may well get a ticket, I added this for peace of mind.

6. Finally. This one was a big one. I am quite happy with the standard Alcantara seats. They're comfy, keep you snug on twisty roads plus wont give you 3 adams apples when you sit on them in the winter. I was even ready to add the Alcantara centre arm rest with Porsche logo however, Er in Doors was not happy with the way the doors looked and I mean in respect of the plastic door pulls. She was concerned that on a £50k+ car the door pulls looked like those out of a VW Polo (her words, not mine). So we had a look at the configurator and thankfully OPC Preston has a used Cayman fitted with standard seats with leather package and she liked it. Well as that option is just over a grand and I wasn't really that bothered leather or not I played my joker and said if you want leather you're paying for it. 'Ok' was the reply 'and I want the Porsche logos in the head rests'. Who was I to argue?

Anyway. The sooner this car goes into lockdown the better. I have banned myself from going on the configurator. The only there option I would have considered would have been the PSP. My OPC said that Power Steering Plus can be coded in at a later stage should we find the steering too heavy. Thats it. Job done. Now just the long wait until mid may for the expected delivery.

Lockdown is the 15th March. The system says delivery mid may but my salesman says that they say that to allow for any delays and he would expect it to arrive 4 weeks earlier but would be able to give a more firm date once it goes into build. Is there any way we can check the build status ourselves rather than having to pester the OPC? BMW and VW have an online chat where you can give them your order number and they give you an update. I don't want to keep emailing the OPC every week.

Two more things:

On the subject of the PSP if you read Brian_Innes’s thread “My 2019 718 Cayman GTS PDK” and indeed his earlier thread “My new 982 718 Cayman S PDK” he explains about why PSP is essential because it not only makes low speed manoeuvres easier but critically also improves the feel at high speed. Brian is a very astute and knowledgable, as well as extremely nice, man who has clearly researched these cars extensively and his options are well worth listening to. Both threads are well worth looking at for all sorts of reasons.

Also worth specifyi is the badly named smokers package. For a “mere” £38 this gives you a box with a nicely damped lid and crucially an extra power socket which is very useful for a trickle charger. it also look much better than a hole in the centre console. It can be retrofitted but at a cost of nearly two thousand pounds because the seats and centre console have to come out to fit it. Don’t worry about it being called smokers package and people thinking the car has been smoked in. It’s well known that it’s a useful and aesthetic addition.

Ive thought about the PSP long and hard and is it worth £180? After speaking to my OPC the PSP actually dissipates the faster you travel. Its only there to assist in parking and slow speed manoeuvres. WRT the smoking pack, it was added on the initial configuration.

Good to note that you've found from experience why we're recommending climate control.!

PDLS is a good call if yours is to be a daily drive and if you're using back roads regularly - from my experience the basic Bi-Xenon PDLS is excellent but I'm sure that LED version is even better, although more costly.

As we've discussed previously there's no speed limiter function, only manually-set cruise control. You could always spec the Speed Limit Indicator to give you a reminder?

Agree with your comment about coloured wheel centres.

Looking back at your original post I think you've got everything else covered, the Smokers Package included, and you can always add PSP at a later stage if you're both struggling.

I'm not sure that there's any way to track the progress of your order other than through the supplying dealer. However, this US link might be useful in determining what stage the order has reached, although I suspect that you'd only get that information from the dealer anyway:

Believe it or not the OPC were still trying to talk me out of climate until I described my frustrations with the manual AC. I'd rather just set it to a temperature and let it work its magic. I'm not interested in the dual zone but its maintaining the constant temp that I want it for. I've added the speed limit indicator. I use it a lot in my current drive when travelling on unfamiliar roads.

I'd have loved the full LED PDSL+ but at £1600 it was a bit steep, the upgrade from standard Bi-Xenons will suffice.

Start saving the pennies? I hope its not going to cost me the earth!

Brian is very clear that the PSP, contrary to what a lot of people including OPC staff think, does more than just reduce effort at parking speeds. If you read his writings he is very clear that it has a significant improvements at high speed and he says it's worth every penny

From reading Brians comprehensive GTS thread, I too agree that he is very experienced in what he needs however, its horses for courses. Some people insist on having cruise for example, I don't as I never use it. The same can be said for better headlights. Bonus with the PSP is that it can be added by the dealer at a relatively small cost.

I've made my opinion on Porsche not fitting climate control on a "premium" make of car quite clear on many occasions, so I'm very surprised at your Centre's comment - very disappointing to say the least, and it sounds as though a bit of re-education of the sales force on the year-round use of air conditioning wouldn't go amiss.

I can't comment on PSP other than to concur with Graham's pointer to Brian Innes's posts on the subject. Apart from the low speed assistance, Brian maintains that it improves steering sensitivity at higher speeds. If you're not convinced then probably it's best to leave it off the options list at the moment and see how you get on without it. I presume that the Cayman you had for the day didn't have PSP and that you weren't overly concerned about steering effort/feel?

The loaner we had did have PSP and it was fine. They have a used one on site so may have a nip up before lockdown to see what its like. Like I said, If we find we need it I'll book it in to have it done.

Just for fun, I’m gonna call “BS” on “PSP is essential”. Why? Well…

Steering feel is subjective. Irrelevant of any facts, what’s light and unfeeling to one is accurate to another. Dan, if you’ve driven a car without it and it feels fine to you, then it is fine

Personally I‘d always favour a linear response to steering, and I’m willing to bet the clever engineers at Porsche feel the same. Otherwise there’d be umpteen (silly IMHO) steering settings when you choose sport, normal, etc. There isn’t, because they’re not needed to get proper feel from steering.

Porsche don’t lack feel at high speed. I eschewed PSP on my 911 and it felt perfectly good on an autobahn last summer at approaching 280kph. And arguably the Cayman has a better chassis setup than a 911 (I drove the Caymans at the ice driving experience, and their chassis and steering feel was, to me at least, sublime).

Base Porkers have everything “essential”, all options are nice to haves.

Excitement is an understatement. We haven't told the kids and I'd like them to do the official unveiling on delivery day. I took another sneaky peak on the configurator this morning and I can honestly say there's nothing on there that I am even considering (PSP apart). Thats it. I'm done. Now to help a friend spec up a Panamera Sport Turismo e-hybrid!

I don't know if this is the same on all 981's or if you can do it on the 982 but my 981 s amongst it's many options does not have speed limit display listed, but if I go into the pcm menu where you can change what is displayed in the third instrument I can select speed limit as one of the 4 or 5 lines whichever it is I have it displayed in the bottom line which means I give up average speed, it works very well both UK and abroad,

Maybe it is optioned with it and the opc missed it off the equipment list or it could be that the limit display option is something different and you would be able to display it as I do without ticking that box, perhaps someone who definitely has the option can confirm exactly how the option is presented

Small update

Just been contacted by my OPC and all Porsche production has been stopped for 2 weeks due to the Corona Virus. Totally understandable and have no problem with that.

On a different note I was told my order was going into lockdown on the 25th so any changes needed to be done before then. I was seriously tempted to change the colour to Aventurine Green but after seeing it on a Boxster I’ll stick with the Night Blue. AG looks amazing on the 911 though and if I was in a position to buy one it would be in that colour.

Now looking at the end of May for delivery.
