Advice needed on buying an 85' 944

very nice.....just off to make an offer [;)] in all seriousness it looks tidy. give it a good check for rust and see how it drives. check all the electrics - I think you can tell if a car has been well looked after if everything works as it should. sunroof is great when it works, a pain when it doesn't. white early cars are among my favourites - needs fuchs though :)

Its funny how things change. When I bought my first series one car in the very early nineties no one wanted Alpine White because it was 'so eighties'...

I noticed the mileage contradiction too, hmmmm... could be his daily and he's updated the ad.. I will call him/her tomorrow after i've had a good sleep tonight (but still will be watching Top Gear @ 8pm - reminder for everyone) Where would be best to check for major rust? Sills, rear arches, boot floor? engine bay? I know the first 2 are where i've seen a lot of worrying threads from other people who have won an ebay special.. I'm really into my 90's retro-ness at the minute (i'm 25 as of February so don't know whether that's strange or not haha everyone now knows me for wearing a flat cap when i'm out and about as i seem to have gone back in time) I've also just come across this S2 for sale for the same money... which is confusing me now as i thought they sold for double the money of the earlier Lux models. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1991-PORSCHE-944-S2-BLUE-/330884317149?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item4d0a3dffdd

That is cheap for an S2, which immediately sets alarm bells ringing. I wonder what is wrong with it?

OPC to 1998 then local garages makes me think their is little recent history. I suspect belts will need doing due to age. If its cheap because of drivers seat why didn't he just pay the £100 to get it fixed? People who look after their cars, clean them, this guy cant even be bothered to do so before taking pictures in order to sell it. If close may be worth a look but I suspect not all is at it seems Edd

Cheap cars with nothing wrong with them 'on paper' or as described always worry me.. If anyone does happen to live close by to the Lux in Plymouth, I will gladly paypal gift over some fuel money and also for your time. Adam

Im not sure that the S2 is 'cheap'. Prices have rallied recently but not everyone has caught up. Im not convinced about the mileage either. Series two seats are far more durable than those found in series one cars and the script fabric is the most durable material used. Those seats look more like 256,000 miles to me, as opposed to 156,000 miles. The seats in my Turbo are in far better condition (tear free), at well over 200,000 miles...

Just noticed a similar lux for sale (bit closer to me as well) but they all just sound like nobody knows what they're talking about.. this is the link - http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C364036 This is definitely a lot more difficult than i first thought it would be lol

I bet that's 163k.... None of these cars will be perfect, unless they have been obsessively maintained. best to buy from someone who knows what they are on about though..

The seats and the gear lever suggest that it might be right, although I agree with your general point.

That one looks tidy and worth a look. They've even left some change on the front seat for the new owner, how generous! [:D]

seats look black (ish) but door card and lower rear seat are burgundy - Made me think they aren't original

I see what you mean. It wasnt available then, though. It appears to be sun damage but it certainly is a little random (door cars and rear squab). The seats are series one style, not series two, which I did wonder about initially. You can see this in the second interior shot. On closer inspection: although the seams havent separated in the usual place, I can now see that the drivers squab has split, so Id want MOTs or a worthwhile service history to acept the odometer reading.

I did think the same about the seats but tbh, it would be the least of my worries. The more solid a car i can find for my budget, the happier I will be (and one that's maybe come from some kind of enthusiast too is always nice, good peace of mind etc) I have sent a message to him/her asking about the odometer and mainly to describe where the servie and history runs up til and if he can describe the cosmetic issues in a bit more detail as the description doesn't help sell the car to me lol Last but not least and on the subject of finding a car that looks like it has been looked after, I have come across another 85 944 with Pasha interior, £2500 and "Guanteed low mileage of 58585 which can be verified through all the MOT certificates." (only thing i might have to remove is the interior but i could grow to like it.. :) This is what he sent me in reply to some questions.. "Dear bloooor, Hi I bought the car with the intention of doing classic car shows having driven 944s in the past but I have ms and can't operate the clutch safely(shame its not an auto) Me and the son-in-law have had a great time fixing the car and getting an mot on it and it truly is as nice as it looks. If you would like to view let me have a phone no and I'llget my daughter to arrange it. Regards Ian coop12g295 Seems very genuine with 1 previous owner too, could be a good find (won't post the link to this one but will PM if anybody wants to advise me on the description and pics etc) Thanks again everyone for the advice given so far, really do appreciate it.

that sounds great - particularly the pascha which is wonderful - my favourite. even better if it's a white one with fuchs...

Haha I knew someone would say it.

mmmm.... Pascha interior. So wonderfully period. I love it! Particularly if it's black Pascha. If you buy the car, whatever you do leave the interior intact.

After googling it and see seme other images, it has started to grow on me, i think the picture put up lets it down a tiny bit as it looks yellow (instead of the google images most look white or tanned) this is he pic posted up -

That is LOVELY! An absolutely classic interior. Make sure the fabric is in good condition / without rips as Pascha fabric is very had to replace. I'd genuinely pay extra for a car with a Pascha interior in good condition. edit: In fact, I am a bit concerned about that area mid-way up the driver's seat back rest. Is that a rip?
