Advice on non RS question - Work related

Thought I would ask the collective for any advice/opinions/contacts about the following non RS related question:

I recently chose to take redundancy package from work as I had never really enjoyed it, and wanted to take the opportunity to spend a bit of time with the kids. I also wanted to spend a bit of time thinking about what I wanted to do next. I've been in blue chip sales/marketing in consumer goods my whole work life and would really like to work in an industry where I found the products more interesting - for me cars/sport/music (although not an exclusive list) - and ideally within a smaller business.

The questions I have therefore:
1.Does anyone know of decent recruiters/headhunters in these types of industries who they can recommend? The issue I have is that all my contacts are in consumer goods - and I know I will end up back in the same area if I'm not careful. - and then regret not having made a change when I had the chance.
2. Has anyone here moved industry successfully - any hints & tips you could share?

Thanks in advance for any help/advice

Matt

PS - before anyone asks the RS is not up for sale

Hi Matt,

Unfortunately I do not know any contacts in these industries, however I made a similar change 3 years ago. Having spent 10 years in the structured, rigid environment of Investment Banking, I moved into Telecomms. The reason was to have more family and friends time, as work and work socialising took up all my time Mon-Fri. Now my time is dictated by myself and not my boss (golf afternoons in the summer are a regularity !!) and I don't have a 4 hour round trip commute. I was able to make the move by drawing on Relationship Management skills I had gleaned early on and initially moving into that side within the Telco industry as I had no knowledge of the products/industry when I started.
Although the money was good, I never really enjoyed what I did and didn't find it challenging - all I will say is do it, as I have never looked back.

Good luck.

Without wishing to hijack Matt's thread Graham, did you do the same sort of work but in a different sector? Having just been made redundant too, I'm all set to jump back into YAIB (yet another investment bank), but have been thinking about other things too. Being in IT, it seems quite transferable. Oh an no my RS ins't for sale either.

Maybe all us redundant people should get together and form a company.... [:D][:D]

My RS is not for sale either....its sold[&:]

Hi Hugh,

No not really. I traded fx in the main but managed 3 large accounts and so drew on the account and relationship management skills. It took 9 months of 12 hours days to understand the industry and products but it was well worth it.
Alot of my friends I left in London are also now looking to other industries and finding the freedom they bring so refreshing.

Thanks Graham - its interesting to hear. I hope to escape London, but am undecided if the time is now.

We could call it RSR...RS Redundants

I'm still waiting for my brain wave on what to do next. Having spent 10 years working all hours of the day, 7 days a week, building 5 multi-million ÂŁ companies from scratch, nearly destroying my health and family relationship along the way I'm reluctant to go back to that in a hurry!!

Really want to do something that I'll enjoy and like helping other people/businesses more these days....

BUT WHAT???

Answers on a postcard please.... [:D]

But Jason, I thought I was only an RS according to the other thread. [:D]

Am I an RS CS (RS Considering Situation) [&:]

I'm afraid you wont get answers from me, I cant even advise myself!! Off back out to the garage now......

My only advice would be don't rush the decision if you can. You don't get many opportunities to change your life path when you are so far down one as an adult.

I find those that do though rarely seem to regret it!

glad to hear i'm not alone in my current quest to do something different, and ultimately more rewarding personally (if not financially..)

like you Jason I've got no firm ideas of what i want to do next...so will take some time to think about it...

would love to have a farm in hampshire with some workshops and potter about all day restoring old volkswagens & porsches....but that always feels more like a hobby than a true way of making enough money to live comfortably on...but the thought of it is still quite appealing...

I've got a mate who gave up a cushy programmers job in an office, to run the classic car workshop. He is "living the dream" has the big workshop, works on astons, cobras, and all sorts of old classic, vintage cars. Also does some race car prep for Caterhams. When you go down on a sunny day, the place looks awesome.

But the harsh reality is, its tough work, and hard to make a real decent living out of. His experience has stopped me heading for that until it can be little more than a self funded hobby.

Sounds familiar......but it's about quality of life, isn't it???

Today I narrowed down some of my aims for new job...

1. has to be outside (at least not in an office all day)

2. has to not involve lenghty time on a computer

3. would like it to involve helping/educating others, preferably kids

Not bad for nearly a year off! [:D]

I'll try and come up with another tomorrow[:)]

Indeed, and if he was doing 7 hr days, and not working weekends, and could afford to race, I'd buy into it. However, he seems to do 10 hour days, work w/e and cant race as much as he would like.

I like Jason's idea, but my hobby is too expensive, and I havent made enough to secure it at its current level [:D][:D]
