advice sort...

Right, I'll take the cam cover off and have a look-see if it ever stops sodding raining. []

Sure, take the cam cover off and look for missing teeth (quite clearly visible), but if the case hardening is on the way out it isn't visible to the naked eye.

Having said that, I have never had my S2 checked by anything other than the naked eye, and a microphone listening device on the rockerbox by an indie before I bought it, and it seems fine. (Famous last words, I know.)

I used a stethoscope on mine too pre-purchase, and on others I looked at. On some the lashing sounded horrible and was glancing the cam cover. I'm hoping not to find missing teeth [:-] and although you can't spot if the hardening is weak you should see the wear thus produced (?)

Stethoscope? Are you a doctor? Where did you get that from?

Umm, no. My logic was that a worn cam would bee hook-shaped, but apparently it's not as simple as that. They can be on the way out without any visible signs of problems, to the untrained eye. Apparently.

Sorry to be gloomy.

You can get a mechanical stethoscope especially for this sort of thing from CPC, Oli - about a fiver and very good. My brother is a doctor and he gave me a normal one but it's too sensitive for this sort of thing.

I'll have to keep my fingers crossed then and use this logic: I heard one that sounded truly terrible (without a stethoscope) that was still running so I figure I've got a bit to go before it gets noisy - if it does I'll change them.....

I am working on very similar logic ... to be honest, I'm not sure who would be able to spot duff cams, given that their problems are supposedly not visible to mere mortals.

Mine runs vquite happily and smoothly, and when the indie did waft his electronic stethoscope over it I had a good listen as well, and it sounded un-worrying to me. I also keep a close eye on it, and am not worried.

I am told that worn chains can cause premature sprocket wear, and know that the chain on mine was changed recently (and has been done once before as well during the life of the car) and therefore think that I may be in a safer boat than some.

I gues part of it comes down to the fact that (cynical mode on), it is a bit of a black art, and I try not to jump at shadows. NOTE - this is NOT to say that it is not a problem, and won't cause damage to the car if it does shear a tooth or two. Just that I have no reason to worry, and therefore won't. (And I do tend to be both mechanically cautious and keep a closer eye on my car than most.)
