ALL LONDON 993 OWNERS

ORIGINAL: edelschmetterling

I have had more than my fair share of mirrors stolen. - I even spoke to the American chap who works at Porsche and designed them and asked whether they could retro make removable mirrors in the hope of resolving this problem. Obviously there is a market and they'll stand to make money from it too. £500 a mirror is a hash price for anyone to have to pay. "" My last mirror was stolen in front of hundreds of people, this is Britain today; no one will try and stop them as they do not want to get stabbed.

Fix the mirrors to the doors with a stronger bolt/ nut or whatever and when they come to rip the mirrors off it will further damage the door. DON'T do it"¦
The only resolution in truth and this is a very unfortunate reality, is don't park on the street, even think twice before parking in a private car park etc. There has to be a way to create a quick release set of mirrors to the benefit of all. Anyone know a designer?

In most cases the only option is to park on the street. Yes I did bring the quick release mechanism up previously, it seems no one wants the job! What an opportunity!

It's all a matter of engineering - F1 wheels are quick release and they're capable of more than 170mph!

Kind regards
Anton

When I purchased my car, the previous owner had replaced the mirrors with a set of the less desirable flag type similar to those from the earlier 3.2/SC cars. This had cured the theft problem although not as aesthetically pleasing as the orginals.

The budgets and intensity of demand aren't really comparable...

Maybe not the budgets, however, the demand seems pretty healthy at present!!

This came up a while ago on Pistonheads when there were a lot of 993 mirrors being stolen. There are too many being stolen just to service the secondhand market for Porsche owners wanting to update from flag mirrors.

I kind of guessed they must be being stolen to order to be used on cars by the 'tuning / cruising' communities.

After five minutes of trying different searches I Googled 'Porsche mirror' and 'cruise' and came across this. Now I'm not saying this particular owner's mirrors are stolen, but it highlights a worrying trend for fitting Porsche mirrors to other cars like Audis...

Westside VW Forum

Notice the mirrors on the blue Audi - then read the other posts below saying "U need sum Wikkid Porsche mirrors on dat car Bro", "thought you was sorting them?", "are you still after a set then?", "Let you know Monday..." - then come to your own conclusions.

Another interesting link:

Hi. Found a secure garage to keep my car in now (expensive, so only a temporary solution), so finally time to get my mirrors replaced.

Guy at the garage where car is being repaired said he has an identical targa to mine in, which has had mirrors and rear lights nicked (same as me), but also the rear hoop spoiler and something from the engine bay.

I can see the mirrors going onto Audis and Peugeots, but what's happening to rear lights and hoop spoilers? Surely these must be being used on other Porsches somewhere?

I have given this some thought.

Two options for all you London 993 owners.

1. Move to rural Wilts, where I live. No-one round here even knows what a teardrop mirror is.

or, if option 1 is not practical,

2. Remove the mirrors (easy to do) and store them for a few months until this craze has passed. This is hopefully just a passing fad. Fill the holes with filler, or grommets as a temporary repair.

Hope that helps.

...  This is hopefully just a passing fad. ....

Not sure it is, my car's first owner was based in Kensington and there are several receipts from it's early years in the file of bills for "replacement mirrors". Until I read this thread I assumed she had gate posts a bit too close together...[&:]

Jstatham,

I believe I saw your car (silver targa) and the 964. I live just around the corner. Real shame.

One thought is that you unfortunately were parked slightly exposed to clientele of the burger/milkshake joint up the hill. They need to leave that way and judging by the cars they drive they make up the customer base of these mirrors.

How much are you paying for your garage? I currently use one as part of my rental arrangement but might need to look around soon.

Regards

M

That's right - I think you did see my car, although they were actually nicked at my old address which was in a quieter street. I have a garage sorted in Belsize Park. Its going to cost £200/mth. Not cheap and not a long term solution from my point of view, but better than the pain of losing the mirrors again and getting them sorted.

After reading this thread went straight onto ebay were there are three pairs for sale at the moment. whats the chances of these not being nicked?

At the below link you can actually buy the set that the teardrop mirrors replace at the same time

Indeed. I actually e-mailed that guy and asked where the mirrors came from. Apparently, a totaled Turbo. Hmmm.....

I have my car back now; looking good and safely locked away. The guy I am renting the garage off says he used to have an M3 and people used to nick the mirrors off that too - to put on their 318i.

Interesting as they look like my mirrors. I dont suppose you know what colour they are?

I didn't ask - but they look pretty midnight blue to me on the website....

Yes I think they were. I did ask the seller a few questions including colour and mysteriously they had been sold!
