I only ever use or allow the removal and refit of my wheel nuts by hand tools.I use a very small amount of copper grease on the studs ,but not on the face that contacts with wheel,then refit all all nuts until hand tight to make sure wheel is seated on hub properly then nip the nuts in as near to opposites order as you can with a five stud hub before torqueing to correct tightness.
I also have my torque wrench calibrated every couple of years ,you can' t be too careful with alloy nuts on steel studs.As we have heard ,there will only be one winner there if you overtighten !!
Have not had any problem with my wheelnuts and they are still the originals
