Am I mad ....?

I'm having a moment of sensibleness....
Am I mad to be using a £100K car as an everyday car, leaving it out in the rain, driving it in all weathers, etc.?
It is also my only car, so if anything happens to it, I'm knackered for getting to work unless I hire/get loaned a replacement.

I took he view that other cars can be used everyday, and there is no reason this one can't. Indeed I think it is best for them to be used daily.
Assuming I can afford the running costs, is this the best way to use my Porsche?
I don't like swapping between cars, so I need to drive something regularly to keep a 'feel' for it.

I'm only considering it since the 12K service is due after 7 months (and the rear tyres have only a few thousand left on them). I have budgeted for it, and driving it everywhere is too much fun (inc. to Sainsburys, to the gardnen centre where people think you are mad putting compost in the front boot, to the airport, to meetings).

Should I treat it like any other car, or treat it differently just coz it costs a bit more?
How much money should I stash away to cover running costs if I do 100K miles in 5-6 years? (Will it cost more than 5K a year excluding insurance).
Is this more than buying a 2nd car? Would I actually use the 2nd car, or would I end up treating the Porsche as a garage queen (which is a waste IMO).

Stuart, you are not mad at all, at least not compared to me. I hardly use the GT3, it gathers dust in the garage waiting for a trip or a track day, yet depreciates out of proportion to the pleasure.

Until I sit in it, that is, and snick the gear lever into first, blip the throttle, then the emotions take over.

I run a car that I use as my daily driver and leave my TT as my "pleasure" car which does make it a garage queen albeit abit grubby as I am determined to use it this weekend and not wash it.

It's a tricky debate my view is I have worked very hard to get my TT and so I should keep it as something special. I used to use my Boxster as a daily driver and it was fun always using it but in the end it may as well have been any car as you just jump in it turn the key drive to the office come home and it all becomes too familiar and it really starts to feel like any car and that specialness of owning a Porsche wained.

It was towards the end of owning the Boxster I bought a very cheap runaround for Mountain Biking this showed me the world of having a second car. The issue was I bought a ten year Ford Escort and although great for taking my bikes about not really something I could take a client out in or visit. But it proved the value of a second car and that it keeps the miles, fuel and other costs of owning a Porsche much lower. It's nice now to open the garage have a clean TT that looks like it just came out the showroom and cruise around in it over the weekend knowing it's not my work hack.

I now have a Golf as my mountain bike and work car and that works well.

With the bad weather I haven't used my TT at the weekends as much as I would have liked but now the salts gone from the roads I will be using it more and more.

I was suprised how useful and how much we have used the second car and like you I didn't think we would hence the Escort but it become clear very quickly that it is useful. But you can still use the TT a couple of days a week for work if you so desire and just spread the mileage over the Vehicles. Some insurance companies will match your no claims from one car on to the second car so it keeps the insurance costs down.

I don't think your mad you just want to get the most out of your TT.[:)]

Regards

I wish I had these worries....[;)]

If the day ever comes when I'm worrying that I'm driving a £100k porsche turbo too much, then thats the day I know I've got to stop worrying! [:)]

Enjoy it - you are probably in about 0.00001% of the entire country that could even afford one and you only live once (so I'm reliably told).

If you've any sense at all you won't be reading this thread and will be outside in it right now...[8D]

Stuart, at least with a Porsche you can use the thing every day, safe in the knowledge it will start, get you there, and, if there's salt on the road, not dissolve into a Tate Modern masterpiece.

If you'd spent the equivalent on a Ferrari or Lambo, the option to have it as your only car would not exist...

You bought it to use it!

PS anyone know how I can get this "non member" thing changed?

Stuart
I have been fighting a similar issue for the last 3 yrs, but have always fallen on the other side of the fence.............ie use an a4 avant diesel for churning the 40K + miles a year, and keep the 911 for the sunny more locally based work days and weekends.
As much as it is an extra stretch having to insure and run 2 cars, it does really help in keeping the 911 as a very special treat to be cherished!

sorry to butt in, but if your GT3 is just sitting in the garage and gathereing dust as you say, and would like someone to take it out now and then im your man[:D]

We sort of share the load. The Turbo is hardly practical for going to Sainsbury's or HFS but it makes blipping around great fun. The beemer does the donkey work, and a lot of the very long distance too really, it's just so comfy and the 4WD does the really mucky stuff. Not so much favoritism as just being sensible.

We are hoping to move soon which will mean a much longer round trip into the office for John and one of the things he has decided not to do is clock up the mileage unnecessarily. It is one of the first things he looks at when looking at cars.

I guess at the end of the day it's your toy and your money. Do with it as you will. You might as well enjoy it. [;)]

Mad... yes

like the rest of us.. Yes !

I'm sure many of us have the same dilema.... yours is in your 996 Turbo and mine is in my older 993....

tried the oher car thing, but now I have to drive the 911 everywhere... it's just so much of fun....

depreciation, well consider that is what happens to your soul when you don't drive the 911..... it may be more £ pain in years to come but the driving pleasure over the proceeding years will more than make up for it [:D][:D][:D]

I only wish I had a garage ! []

The problem with going for a second car is that you get on the tread mill again, my second car started off as an old C class Merc, to a not so old S500 then to a new SL55. Then you start thinging about a third car !

Marc,

it will get a run tomorrow but thanks for the offer!

Exactly. You start off with nice sensible diesel hatchback, then start thinking about something a little more comfortable with a bit more poke for motorway cruising, then you're looking at a 2nd hand M5 or XJR before you know what you're doing.

No Stuart, you arent mad
I use my Turbo everyday rain and shine and leave the Boxster S for the sunny days for fun days out

Okay, the truth is..............My turbo is an ickle Smart [;)]
