Stuart, I think all we car nuts have a few bolts loose!!!
As you say these cars were meant to be driven & Pork suffers less from extra miles than other "premium" brands (try putting 12k a year on your 360!!!) so like you I use mine most days, although not all.
Sadly the biggest problem with Pork isn't using it every day, rather the dreaded depreciation, Porsche GB may still be restricting supply to try & hold residuals, but new EEC legislation means a vast number of cars are coming in through the back door & over supply is a real issue for us all. This is why 996 values are under pressure & it will no doubt be the same for the 997.
Even though I purchased my beastie 6 months old with a 12k discount from new it has still lost another 20k over two years, whilst this is still good for such a high value specialist car, it is the most painful aspect of ownership even for a car nut! Having said that I simply can't see a car to replace it (aside from a Gallardo!!!) & every time I'm flat out in second & third it all makes sense!
The great news for all the rest of you is that early 996TT's are around for £50-65k-simply fantastic value! New base 997 or second hand 996TT, I know where my money would go.
