Annoyed about insurance

After finding last year what I thought to be the best insurance for the 964....good price, guaranteed value and trackday cover for a small extra premium per event, I've now been informed by Hagerty that they can't offer renewal! The reason being that their policy is now restricted to 3,000 miles per annum for any car built from 1990. i.e. 964s onwards! That sort of mileage would soon be eaten up by a couple of good road trips and a few weekends/trackdays. So now, even though I don't need more than 5,000 miles per annum, I've got to look for someone else []

I was told when I took out my insurance with Hagerty, which is for 3K miles with agreed value, that if I decided after 9 or 10 months that 3K would not be enough that I could extend to 5K for a small additional premium, about an extra ÂŁ40.

I was quoted for 5K and 3K and I was told that I need only pay the difference if I wanted the increased mileage allowance. Get back on to Hagerty on this because there may be a mistake.

No mistake chaps. The letter arrived today saying that they could not offer to renew (no reason given). So I phoned them and was informed that this was now the policy for renewals and new business. So be prepared for them to say the same when you're due for renewal. If you're happy with 3,000 you should be fine but for me it's a bit too low.

Thanks for the recommendation Paul.

Oh dear, my renewal has come through and I was going to call them to up the limit from 3k to 5k. I don't think 3k is enough for the track days that I have planned for this year[:(]

Give ClassicLine a try (01455 639000), good service and will do a 5k policy. I've just renewed with them again on the 993.

Good luck.

I renewed with Hegarty, and had a discussion around mileage, they said that once I hit 3000 miles, I could ring and extend to 5,000. However, I dont think I'll hit 3000 miles this years, so it depends really.

Howver, the premium did go up a lot. I understand they've had issues with the post 90s reclassification and excesive claims which has impacted premiums. This may account for some of the clamp down on policy types.

Not good news though Steve.

Interesting stuff you say there Hugh. I've not checked the mileage yet to see what I've done since I took the policy out. Even though the policy was for 5,000 I'm sure it will actually be very close to 3,000. However, the letter said nothing about the reason they couldn't offer renewal. The mileage restriction was only revealed on phoning them. Even then there was no effort on their part to persuade me to take a policy with reduced mileage. From what you've picked up, it could well be that they're actively discouraging post 90s cars unless they're treated mostly as garage queens. They know full well that mine is not since I paid them 5 x ÂŁ35 extra last year for trackday cover. My guess is that they've decided I'm a high risk.

My policy with Hagerty commenced on 4 January this year and my car was registered in February 1990 (20 years old in a few weeks, I shall have to give it a birthday wash!! [8|]). I only just sent my agreed value photos last week, due to a break in the snow/rain/clouds.

They must have changed their policy very recently.

Having recently done the rounds getting quotes, I just looked at my notes and Hagerty quoted me for a 5k policy on the 993 two weeks ago!
I suspect as you suggest Steve, it's a risk profile issue!

Yes Phil, I'm coming round to this being the underlying reason more and more. Funny how 25 years driving without a claim or a conviction can suddenly count for nothing [8|]

You mean that they have offered you track day insurance and are now complaining because you have taken advantage of it too much?

Nothing was said to that effect but it could be a reason. I guess time will tell if we see other regular trackdayers not offered renewal terms.

I remember from last year Hegerty offering 3000pa, with the option of upping it to 5000pa for a small fee.

E-mailed them this year to ask if they'd re-quote, they read it but not heard anything, you'd think that they'd want our business given the current climate......? And why do they then botherb to have prominant stands at the big race meets at silverstone that we go to and support?????

Looks like I'll be staying with Aon then!

I've just re-insured from 20th.
I got an unlimited mileage policy with Aviva for 60 quid more than last years.
I thought I would do 4k miles last year and ended up doing 5.3k.
As I might go for a drive on the continent I wanted a bigger mileage allowance.
I got it through Adria Flux, but take care with dealing with their operators as
they don't sing from the same hymn sheet.
Also I was offered one policy and when I decided to take it up, halfway through
the process I was told the Co. didn't insure vehicles older than 17 years.
I found that very peculiar, 17 years!! Very odd number.

I dont think it is just around the trackdays though. I had a long conversation with them as most of miles are likely to be on track, and thus I pay the premium seperately so asked if that could be discounted from my 3000 miles allowance. They didnt go for that to be fair.

However, I have done that with the caterham in the past, and had a switch on the speedo. Insurance company werent happy, but agreed in writing that they couldnt stop the solution and wouldnot invalidate my insurance, so long as the speedo worked on the road at all times ! [;)]

Similar situation to H.........

My rally car is on a policy which is limited to 1000 miles pa......................but these are specifically Road Miles. Any miles I do on rallies or trackdays do not count. This makes sense as the car is not actually insured while competing. Obviously relies on an element of trust.

Sorry this is not totally relevent to Steve's problem - but does show some insurers do think things thru and come up with the 'right' product.

Thanks Phil. I'm now with ClassicLine too for a 5K policy and for less than I paid last year. Looks like this was a blessing in disguise! [:)]

Good to hear that Steve.

I got a fantastic deal with ClassicLine last year, there quote was about half that of all the others, and the benefits were even better.........so it was a no-brainer fo me!

However, I didn't require any track day cover. Do they offer it and if so, what are the terms / cost?

Simon
