Another 912 for sale on Ebay in the US

I liked the Speedster when it was up for sale but not keen on the cabby - bet it looks strange with the roof up - although with the weather over there they probably never need it up!

I was under the impression that as long as the cars were manufactured in Europe, that you don' t have to pay VAT. That has certainly been the case with a number of cars that we have had over the past couple of years.

Seat belts are a legal requirement for 66 cars - in fact from ' 62 on I seem to recall.

There should be no duty payable on any product entering the EC that was made in the EC or that at some time in the past has had duty paid (originating in). I can' t find anything on the C&E website, but I never paid VAT on American classisc cars that I imported in the early nineties, but I did pay duty. I think the ruling was that vehicles over 20 years old (not 10 as I said above) are free of VAT

Right - I have to say I was a bit worried about all this talk of no duty or VAT to pay - especially as I' ve paid it for 2 60' s Porsches in the last year.

I phoned Customs again to check if there was any way that you could import a used car without paying duty or VAT. I was told that there was no way - except if you were bringing in a car you already owned and used in that country. The only option was having a reduced rate of VAT with a Binding Tariff Agreement, and no duty.

I did ask if she meant duty not VAT and vice versa (as I thought there was no VAT and reduced duty) but she was adamant. Anyway, apparently you do have to pay some form of tax when importing a car, and successful application of a BTI will give a reduced rate.

Has anyone out there imported a car without paying *any* sort of tax?

On the issue of seatbelts, If the car (whatever age) has them they have to conform (i.e. no tears etc). My 66 912 had lap belts only and it passed. I was told that even if that car did not have belts, it would have still passed as it was built like that before the seatbelt law came into force. My 69 911 has non-inertia 3-point belts and it passed. My limited knowledge on seatbelt law comes from my local MOT garage owner so he could be wrong. But whatever the age of your car, IMHO you' d be mad to drive without seatbelts.

Nick, thanks for the info.
It' s got to be a 912 or early 911. I want a 912 as it has a smaller engine than mine and the other half won' t be able to catch me. [:)]
I am just trying to get a feel for what is out there at the moment, won' t be able to afford anything until next year, wedding and things to pay for.
Now theres an idea for a wedding present........
